Musical references in this episode: Jean Pierre Polnareff is a reference to French musician Michel Polnareff Polnareff's sister, Cherie Polnareff, is a reference to the song "Tout, Tout Pour Ma Cherie" from Michel Polnareff. Crossfire Hurricane, the named attack Avdol does against Polnareff is a reference to a lyric in the song "Jumping Jack Flash" the lyric in question is "I was born in a crossfire hurricane" Fun Street Fighter fact: Guile is inspired by Polnareff. Someone at Capcom who was working on Street Fighter thought it would be funny to make a character that looks like Polnareff but if you squashed his hair down with a "pencil" (I'm guessing they said pencil because they were looking at a drawing of Polnareff)

The outro song is Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles. Released in 1986. I’m honestly surprised none of you recognized the song. I remember watching this for the first time and my mom overheard the song and she freaked out lol

So true. I have a list of all the animes ive watched in my notes app and i have jjba ranked 14 out of 47. It's not the highest (but still pretty high) but i put a star next to it bc it's one of those ones where im like "its not necessarily peak story writing but its special to me bc its super fun and awesome" lol. Fun fact, JoJo's characters technically don't have an "official" color. Araki has said he likes to emphasize the feelings / situations rather than just coloring the characters, he actually doesn't given them official colors for this reason. The anime staff wanted to somehow honor that and they included the scenes with different colors.

I think the point of not taking the plane is that if a stand user somehow made it on the plane again (even a private jet) there’s no escape and they’re risking a plane crash which is like 99% fatal.

You guys never watched the outro for part 1 and 2 😭 literally one of the best songs in the show and one you should react to.

Director’s Commentary “I will talk about the animation for this episode in detail. First, it was directed and storyboarded by Mr. Suzuki, the series director. But we have to also talk about the young Shunichi Ishimoto, who was an animation director for the first time. He was assisted by Masahiko Komino, the chief animation director and character designer, whose advice and influence have resulted in these dense drawings. We initially wanted to create a 3D model of the Tiger Balm park in Hong Kong; it soon proved to be too complicated, with an unacceptable value for money. Thus, we've backtracked toward the standard 2D backgrounds. Avdol and Polnareff enthusiastically battle by launching their best attacks, not without showing off in the process. After several back-and-forths, Polnareff is finally defeated. Personally, I like the characteristic color tones applied in this scene. Since the first episode, the omnipresence of fights tends to wildy increase the number of animation frames. This episode holds the record of around 15,000 drawings. Just like in the first one, this is because of Magician's Red's flames. It reminded us that fire also burns through animation frames (laughs). Finally, it's not specific to this episode, but the actions scene are this cool because of the animation team of course. I want to thank them for that.” - Naokatsu Tsuda

The thing with Dio's stand is interesting. Araki is such an interesting author for me because he's not afraid to change his mind mid story. Dio's original ability was supposed to be all of the Jostar's stands put together. He would encompass all of their abilities simultaneously. Araki decided against this in the end and gave Dio a different ability. People retroactively explain Dio's hermit purple like abilities as Jonathan's stand but it's not necessarily canon.

I agree early on that jojo isn’t up there in terms of writing and storytelling. However the beauty of the part system with jojo is Araki can try many different things and he gets better as he goes so the later parts feel like they can rival other great stories.
