Great episode. I really like how Subaru expects the protagonist/hero status and basically parodies the isekai genre, but then he gets brutally killed instead and has nothing. Really cool way to set the expectations for the tone and kinda show that this isn't just a normal, generic isekai.

Not every story needs a badass strong mc. Its a redemption story, he starts off as a bum, the worst person you can think of, then slowly develops into a good guy at the end. Its the most realistic anime in terms of development. Plus it easily has the best world building in anime, most beautiful animation and art, best music, and the antagonists are all good too. It deserves to be highly rated. But review bombers that have never watched it have screwed that up, don't be one of them

It does have some clever ideas, but you can definitely feel its still a self-insert teenager fantasy at its core. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself but it kinda nerfs it imo. Hi guys, I have been watching you since the Aot days and really have been enjoying your Jojo reactions over on youtube lately, this is I think my second time buying a patreon subscription and I wanted to share a couple of things with yall : Rezero on a first watch is great and can be phenomenal but on multiple rewatches with full knowledge of the cut content, I daresay it's a top 3 anime story of all time. I would only ever put Aot above it to be honest. If you happen to know this show decently well, even on a first watch it can be one of the best animes you have watched but it greatly varies depending on how you experience it and what you gather from it. However I have no doubt that with how locked in, passionate and curious you usually are it will be an amazing experience regardless. Just to start off with a little disclaimer, I want to say that Subaru will sometimes do things that seem strange, irrational, or even downright stupid. But the truth is, almost everything he does is deliberate from a writing perspective. There's always a bigger picture that isn't immediately obvious. It simply takes time to understand what the story is trying to convey through Subaru. This is something you'll gradually realize at varying degrees depending on your understanding of his character. And it makes all the difference. A perfect example is this very first episode: instead of questioning why he was suddenly transported to another world, he is a bit surprised at first but then he simply accepts it, it's more than that, he's thrilled and happy about it which is not normal behaviour and the fact that as Cannon said nothing even happened for him to be transported is weird, that doesn’t even happen in isekais. So don't hesitate to point out anything out of the ordinay or that you think is weird, don't chalk it up to "anime stuff or anime logic". There is none of that in Rezero. In Rezero (almost) anything has a reason. So yeah just wanted to share these small details and disclaimer, I hope it serves well. But I can't really express how excited I am, I have the season 2x7 knots in my stomach knowing that you are finally reacting to Rezero. And yes Re:zero is as much your typical isekai as say Aot is your typical shonen. It's the most unique of all isekais.

How are you going to say every story doesnt need a strong badass mc and then pretend that Mushoku isnt a literal power fantasy for the mc to be reborn hot and powerful lol also @Kadence when the story's entire point is about the character study and redemption of the mc, it absolutely has to have a mc you enjoy dissecting when that's the entire point of the story. If they successfully pulled off the themes of redemption for Rudy and he wasnt a literal pedophile, it would be an easy 9/10 show. But his being brings it down multiple points unfortunately, because the story fails in what it's presenting. What it excels in is the background of the story, but not what it's actually trying to execute in the forefront. The only improvement he's made towards his character is learning confidence to not be a shut in anymore, and learned to appreciate his family after being a terrible son. Of course the confidence was handed to him without really earning it because he was reborn as a genius op mage with noble good looks to match it, but the family was some real development. All that being said, he never redeemed his gravest sin, and a story being about redemption completely ignoring the greatest sin committed by the character is a complete failure for the attempt at that theme. He recorded his niece in the bathroom to jerk off too before dying. Did he address that ever? No. Did the story challenge that moment in the new world? No. What did he do after being reborn? Groom 2 children immediately to "be his perfect woman". Verbatim what he said. Now if he wasnt a literal pedophile who was supposed to be redeemed in his past life, I could have given some leeway to being reborn and falling in love with the same age characters even having memories. Would have still been weird, but I could have given grace. But he's a former pedophile with the memory of being a pedophile, and the story immediately rewards him with child brides before even any real attempt at redemption lol "oh no, I got erectile dysfunction because of a misunderstanding with losing my virginity with one of the girls I groomed" that's not at all a punishment or a sign of growth lol it's a complete and utter failure towards the themes presented when even several season afterwards its still not been tackled that he was a piece of shit for doing that to his niece. Simply being kicked out by his brothers before he was reborn is also not a sign of growth or redemption, because that was just the immediate consequence to the action by others, not something he worked on himself to do.

Because there are states in USA that allow 16 year olds to marry and even younger with parental consent. You can still consider it wrong but legally it's not and there are plenty of eras in the past where getting married that young was totally normal. Pretty sure Japan is 16 in places too

it's not the plot that is complex, I mean we can't even know that really since the story is so long we don't even know that for sure since it's 4 seasons in and according to the author even if you add the fifth season it's not half of the length of the show. However Rezero has EXTREMELY compelling and complex writting when it comes to the handling of its themes, the character writting and how many important details and its overall lore. You'll see proof of that in the future comments if you read them.

The dialog is what this show is about mostly and I'm really glad you're here for it and like the characters so far. This show also has some banger openings and even better endings imo. Oh no, didn't know you guys are watching the Director's Cut. Not aware of what's going on in the Discord but I highly recommend NOT watching the Director's Cut, it is widely panned (aka considered to be inferior) by the majority of hardcore Re:ZERO fans and doesn't add anything of value. Editing, soundtrack decisions (!!), pacing, and structure are all definitively worse in the Director's Cut.

having a badass and strong mc is definitely not what im concerned with 😭 rarely (if ever) do those tend to be my favorite characters in a series - my issue is more with the fact that its frequently mentioned how morally bankrupt the main character is in totally disgusting ways rather than any intriguing ones 🥴 ive also seen many mention (including in the comments here, now) how he consistantly dodges any real consequences for said nastiness and regularly gets away with things pretty much scot-free. i HAVE actually heard that the world building is pretty good before tho, so its a shame that it comes with such a gross mc. i dont rate things in gen tho, let alone waste my time review bombing things im uninterested in, so i assure u thats not a concern tho lol

And a web novel which is WAY ahead of the anime. Very easy to get spoiled or for people to drop very not subtle "hints" as you get further into the show. So just be careful

Nah the directors cut is only 13 eps, but double length episodes instead of the standard 23minutes 24 ep season. They also just updated some CGI and lengthened some shorts here and there by a few seconds. The directors cut is the only available version to watch on Crunchyroll now also

Seeing a lot of "it's better" comments but no justification for it... essentially all of the animation changes were added in the Bluray release, i.e. before the Director's Cut, so that's not really a good reason, and the double length episodes only serve as a detriment to the pacing. But still excited for the Geks to watch this show regardless!

It's a pretty mid show, the lack of action and combat is definitely a big draw back, but the story can be pretty interesting at times, but also can be very slow, confusing, and monotonous. Worth to check it out, but definitely not for everyone. Slime or Mushoku are far far better overall isekai animes.
