Fun fact: Corazon's official name is Donquixote Rosinante, which is a direct reference to the main character's old horse in the 17th-century's famous Spanish novel called "Don Quixote". In the novel, Rocinante means a formerly low-quality or rough horse. Fittingly, Rosinante is, like his famous counterpart, pretty clumsy, often tripping over his own feet and setting himself on fire by accident 😅 On the other hand, like the novel's protagonist, Doflamingo is a somewhat tragic, unhinged noble living in a world of grandiose, dangerous delusions. However, while the literary Don Quixote is a well-meaning fool dreaming of chivalry, Doflamingo is a cruel tyrant who weaponizes his celestial pedigree for his own gain. There are so many references in one piece to other famous classical literary works that it would be too much to go over every single one, but I specifically wanted to point out these ones because I love this particular part of story in one piece so much. I have much more to say but I'll wait until you get there 👀 can't wait for yall to see the rest! ❤️

The Flevance story has a lot of roots in real life, Radium paint, asbestos, even lead itself. So many companies and governments either ignorant to the effects or just negligent leading to disease and death.

Sadly enough, the events in Flevance are very much based on real life events. A famous example is a city in Italy called Casale Monferrato, that gained a lot of popularity for its massive asbestos industry and was similarly impacted by it's toxicity. Just like in this backstory, the government knew about this, but still hid this aspect from the people for decades, downplayed the dangers of it, whilst factory owners reaped massive economic benefits from it. Another example is the case of the Cadmium poisoning in Japan caused by mining companies, referred to as "Itai Itai disease", which translates to "it hurts, it hurts". The most recent example is even from a few weeks ago, when the current mayor of New York exposed the negligence of the government after 9/11 regarding the toxic air lingering after the attack, purposely even hiding the facts, leading to thousands of New Yorker's deaths over the years. Like Mckay said: "History keeps repeating itself"

Great outro discussions. The World Government being in power for 800 years and maintaining that power across an entire planet shows that they could pretty much always cover up or do what they like because there's just no one that can oppose them and do anything significant about it, through sheer number and area of control. It's not until a Mr Gol D Roger found the One Piece and kicked off the great pirate era, as well as Monkey D Dragon forming the Revolutionary Army, that more people really started to search for that freedom. The only thing missing was a Monkey D Luffy to be born and start taking out their warlords (Crocodile, Moria), bust up and humiliating their proud and untouched facilities (Enies Lobby, Impel Down, Marineford) and even punch a Celestial Dragon, all because they messed with his friends and brother.

Very sadistic of you, Mr. Doflamingo. Those bullets could’ve killed him for sure and Law wouldve never realized they were lead either if he did die (he probably did leave him alive for the fruit) But Doflamingo, who obviously understood this could happen, still made the lead bullets anyways, just for his own sick satisfaction. It would prove that in the end, Law couldn’t escape his fate, directly validating Doflamingo’s statement we heard that “the weak don’t get to choose how they die”. Basically stating (to himself) that he has control over Law’s fate. Because the weak are bound to the will of those who are strong, further reinforcing his obsession with control.

Great outro analysis was peak. Loved the discussion about human history and that Ancient Rome style collapse. It’s what makes that fan letter so damn good. I remember like all the symbolism with the puzzle pieces and one being left over. Humans always have a way of banding together and uprooting this kind of stuff. Also it’s crazy how doffy sees someone survived Flevance and immediately dives into researching not because he cares but because he wants to manipulate. That’s why all of his family has all these weird quirks most people see them as outsiders but he sees opportunity

The music composer of One Piece is Kohei Tanaka, and he deserves all the glaze as being one of the best composers in the anime industry, and is imo the most impressive in all anime. One Piece has well over 1000 OSTs across the anime, movies and TV specials, and Tanaka has composed probably 90% of that music, including entirely new soundtracks for 11 movies. His range is insane as you've heard throughtout the anime, but imo he stand above all else when it comes to the grand adventurous themes with the full orchestra and/or choir, as well as the upbeat/hopeful/inspiring music, and he is top tier with the sadder and solemn music that always make the flashbacks and emotional scenes hit so hard. Even to this day he is still pumping out elite theatrical albums and OSTs for the recent arcs, so you guys still have a lot of his best work to come.

The World government may be corrupt, but the Marines are still effectively the only real force maintaining order in a world overrun by pirates, where the Straw Hats are de facto only genuinely decent and altruistic ones, with only a few exceptions who tend to be associated with them. What choice do ordinary, law-abiding people really have but to trust and follow the chain of command of the military organization that actually upholds and enforces the rules that keep society functioning. For me, it is very difficult NOT link the story of One Piece to current leadership and world history. There are so many parallels that it is hard to strike the right balance when comparing the story's themes to the real world. That is why our generation so often associates One Piece with a revolution against the current world order. It is a topic that transcends the left-versus-right divide, yet is entirely worth thinking and reflecting upon.

"one piece has the worst music of the big three" is pain to my ears but I could understand how someone thinks that way. Narutos music is incredibly thematic and fits the setting super well where as all of one pieces music needs to fit a wildly grand world filled with hundreds of cultures and unique islands. I haven't seen bleach yet but shiro sagisu is the literal goat so it could also beat one piece
