So they explained it in the after show, the writers had the governors death split between Rick michonne and Lily. Rick’s injured hand lets the governor get the upper hand. Michonne puts the governor down, and lily takes the final shot since at that point they were the ones most deserving in killing the governor

By the way, as of this episode the show has adapted the entire first Compendium of comics. The fall of the prison is like the end of Act 1 of the story. The fall of the prison is brutal in the comics more people died, but then again the show has already killed some of them off so having Hershel die here like this gave the same emotional impact.

I just want to say I appreciate the prison set. Watching the talking dead afterwards it’s amazing how this set was built. I honestly thought they found this old abandoned prison in the middle of the woods when I was younger 😂 but they built this from the ground up. RIP Prison you will be missed.

I don’t think the governor didn’t care anymore. It was just he knew there wasn’t anything he could do. It was just like a complete flip on how he was with penny. I think Rick’s speech just pushed him over the edge. I legitimately believe him when he said he was trying to do it different but just couldn’t believe that they could live together. RIP Hershel!!! ❤️ He was the heart of the prison. 😭 Such an amazing episode! One of the greatest episodes of the entire show. Beautiful acting all around. And I KNOW everyone thinks my Governor take is crazy, but I stand by it. He is a PERFECT villain. Having the two episodes before this feel almost like a redemption arc, knowing damn well and deep down that he ain’t changing for shit, is GREAT writing. I love that he was given a second chance and STILL chose chaos with it. Also I love that he had 2 stages of death just like his 2 chances to make things right. Michonne and then Lily. He had every opportunity to walk away, start over, and become something different, and he chose not to. A man like that can’t turn back. He can’t change his ways. He’s too far gone, and honestly, I don’t think he’d even be able to live with himself if he did decide to do good. HE HAD TO GO. Worse than the walkers. And props to David Morrissey because he gave one of the best performances in the entire show, besides Goat Grimes. 😂 He’s simultaneously compelling and detestable. He’s crazy yet calm. Charming yet completely gross. He can sit there and talk to you like the most reasonable man in the room while you slowly realize there is something very wrong with him. He was the first villain I ever genuinely feared on screen. He’s easily one of my top ten villains of all time. And what makes it even better is that he isn’t some mindless monster. There are moments where you can see the person he could have been. That’s what makes his choices so damn frustrating. He was given chances. He was given people who cared about him. He was given a chance to walk away. And every single time, he chose his pride. He broke Rick. He broke the prison. He broke himself.

Fun fact. In the talking dead after this episode they explained how the governor wasn't actually supposed to die in this episode and they had plans for him to be a longer running villain but the actress who played Lily decided improvise and shoot him in the head, killing the actor. Everyone did a great job staying in character

The tank getting blown up by a hand grenade is funny, but not COMPLETELY unrealistic. You'd have to assume the breach inside the tank was open because a shell was being loaded, and the grenade went into the crew compartment where some ammo would be. The tank isn't modern, but the window for this is still very small, so Daryl just had perfect timing lol. More realistically, the grenade wouldn't have ended up in the crew compartment and MIGHT have caused significant enough damage to the inside of the barrel for it to become dangerous to fire.

McKay's point about human pride and ego is so true. Such is life today and always. There were so many fan “what if” theories when these episodes first aired about how it would be like if The Governor took Rick’s word and decided to join the prison and live together. Obviously there was only one path for him…pride and obsession but it could have worked. He wouldn’t ever suddenly become a sweet, well-adjusted member of the group. He'd still be the Governor. But he could have absolutely became one of Rick's most valuable and most dangerous assets. His literal calvary, hidden away in his peaceful pocket of the prison until needed. Rick was right, it could have worked under the conditions that they got to decide how to protect their own people. In no way can he ever be forgiven but joining Daryl, Michonne and Rick…that alliance would have been GOATED!

speaking in vaguer terms so the patreon gods dont smite my comment again: the governors end was very well done i think. michonne finishing things with the same instrument he used to finish hershel felt like poetic justice in a way, and im glad she didnt do so quickly bcuz he hadnt given hershel or others that luxury either. i also cant imagine having to walk around with said instrument knowing that the last itd touched was hershel, if she hadnt 'cleansed' it so to speak, in the way that she did. it was definitely a finishing move, and it left him to observe the ruin of all his own failings. it also felt incredibly appropriate that lilly (someone who looked so much like maggie) was the one to end things off entirely, after the man had pulled her and her family into a mess that they had never wanted to be involved in to begin with

also i have to disagree with carter that the governor had more good in the beginning! there forsure could be worse, but i think the best version of him we saw was when he was just with lillys family and around /no one/ else. when we met him he was already massacring other groups under the guise of that persona, and imo the personas one of the worst parts. he made people feel safe and then betrayed them in the worst ways. id rather a pack of wolves than a wolf in sheeps clothing, cuz at least then ik what im dealing with - there r enough ppl like that walking around already, unfortunately

I give my praise to this show, because it honestly is one of the very few that I don't think I've ever been late for/had to catch up to. yeah i think that many ppl can be driven to do horrible things when their back is against the wall or something/someone they truly love is at stake, in the sense that caged animals lash out - but the governors back /wasnt/ against the wall at the time and what he did to maggie was calculated and calm. especially with the type of threat that was, i also dont believe that comes out of nowhere...and i saw others mention how its really up in the air whether he wouldve done worse if it werent for the fact that it was clear he wasnt gonna get answers out of her like that regardless :(( its truly a terrifying thought. the fact that he had had a wife and daughter too like- its just all so icky

I was like 15 when I last watched this season so I didn't really catch the thematic stuff about "getting to come back" that had been hinted at since the first episode with that girl you see zombified at the end of this episode, same goes for the Governor "Liar" stuff peppered throughout the last few episodes. Really well written stuff, TWD gets a bad wrap for being "not well written" because it has an excessive number of seasons, but this show is great for a long time.

I just realized the huge contrast between Penny and Megan’s deaths. He keeps Penny hidden away because he can't accept his failure to protect her. Then, he keeps Megan hidden away while he attacks the prison because he can’t accept not having a safe place for his new family. But when he sees Megan dead, he finally accepts that she is gone. Unlike with Penny, he doesn’t think to keep her or hide her away. He shoots her himself. With Penny, someone else killed her and it completely devastated him because he was clinging to a delusion. Shooting Megan himself is him finally realizing that he can't outrun his failures, and that the illusion of safety and setting with a new lovely family is gone.

devastating banger episode, but zooming out a bit, they spent sooooo much time with and individually on the Govenor for it to climax like this and it be over that fast. idk its not like nothing happened but it feels short and quick for 2 seasons and like 2-3 episodes specifically dedicated to his character only

R.I.P Hershel and Scott Wilson amazing actor, Rick’s voice lines this episode were so good don’t think any other actor could have done it better 👏 Andrew Lincoln. Also rip Judith but it was nowhere near as bad as the comics, that could not be aired even today. Amazing reaction overall loved seeing yalls sadness 😂

This episode gives me so much dread before watching. I've literally never rewatched besides once alongside other reactors and it's still so heartbreaking. I can't even see the still of Hershel's smiling face without tearing up 😭Scott Wilson was a goated actor he made Hershel such a comfort character and did such an amazing job ❤️

Def one of the most gut wrenching episodes unfortunately (or not) it doesn't take the cake of being THE MOST. I can't wait to see how yall will react to the rest of the season. Because from here on now we get some of my most favorite plot lines of the show ;)

Damn so thats when Hershel dies. Its weird becuse my memory had him dying at the end of season 2, then I thought he died in the prison zombie outbreak, then the virus. Totally forgot the governor kills kim. This was a crazy episode, I didn't remember any of this at all lol.
