EDIT: A good overview from the creator of Cara herself: https://cara.app/post/bb1dc657-591e-47dd-bc94-d9e99a09f377 This is so much worse than what I thought too, it has cost Cara 1000s in server fees because some self important little freaks spent $10 scraping the site for their own amusement, just sick. I'll leave my original post here, but I'm only minorly affected by this, ultimately. Larger damage is being done to Cara and websites that are being scraped and charged server fees because of it. The people who do this are a plague.

Hiya everyone, I've got some frustrating but probably not surprising news. Long rambly post ahead. The short of it:

As the title says, my work was scraped from the artist/portfolio site I use as a map gallery known as Cara. For those that don't know Cara is a by-artists for-artists website that is specifically for those of us that do not like, nor want, anything to do with generative AI/slop.

Here is my gallery as an example: https://cara.app/stainedkarbon600 of my works were stolen from my gallery and stuffed into multiple datasets that are then used and sold to various buyers to train their slop machine on.

I work so hard to make these maps for everyone to enjoy and use in your adventures. I put my heart and soul into making them, and while I feel like I'm not always successful in making a map, a piece of art, that I'm super happy with, I do my best to put a piece of myself into it in hopes that someone will see it as more than just a functional image. When I put a map out I hope that it'll find a special place in someone's adventure and help inject just a little bit of my heart into it to add to their own. Extremely cheesy I know, shut up its just a map, get over yourself etc etc lol I am who I am though. Everyday I have this worry in the back of my head that one day someone will just start churning out AI slop maps in my style and destroy my livelihood cause they'll just be able to bastardize my work, turn it against me and flood me out. Why pay a slow, neurotic artist money when you can get unlimited 'good enough' slop maps for free? I'm scared, and I'm tired. I just want to make art for this lovely community and if I'm lucky, pay my bills while doing it, cause I don't have any other worthwhile skills to fall back on, this is it. I'm an artist to the core, its art or die for me lol This just fucking sucks, for all of us across many areas. It is so easy to feel disheartened when something like this happens, especially when it slaps you in the face rather than quietly in a corner somewhere. I recently did a free trial and a lot of lovely people showed up to sample my offerings, I really hope you're enjoying what you've found here, and thank you deeply if you've decided to stick around for a little bit after the trial <3 All the support really helps me to carry on doing this.

More details, general ramble:EDIT: A good overview from the creator of Cara herself: https://cara.app/post/bb1dc657-591e-47dd-bc94-d9e99a09f377 This is so much worse than what I thought too, it has cost Cara 1000s in server fees because some self important little freaks spent $10 scraping the site for their own amusement, just sick.Recently some AI bro with a questionable understanding of 'consent' (surprise surprise) decided it would be a 'fun project' to scrape Cara and steal millions upon millions of works by artists who just want a safe space to post our work and interact with other creatives.

I'm not gonna go into detail about it, but if you are curious just google 'Cara artist scrape dataset' or something like that and it'll show up.The whole genAI conversation is a much larger one which I've had a million times and don't want to get into much more. I know everyone is going to have differing opinions and nuances, but I at least hope that we can agree on the fact that stealing work and then turning it on the people they stole it from is wrong. Now obviously no place on the internet is safe from scraping these days, mass data theft of information is too valuable to those that stand to profit from it, and the tools to do it are too easily accessible. I am also under no illusions that my work is already out there on questionable sites and in datasets long ago. That being said the part that saddens me is the willful cruelty of these people to not only steal everything, but to also do it 'just because they can' and 'because artists deserve it', and whatever other excuses they shit out to justify their actions.

I could go on forever about this so I'll wrap it up by saying; Fuck AI bros, fuck AI. Take pride in being human.

yikes.. sorry to hear that man 😭 but I'm recently one of many who took part in your free trial. And I gotta say, really loving all the maps you've made! I'm currently using them in my Daggerheart campaign 😁 Just wanna say, keep doing what ur doing and fuck those who steal em 🔥🔥

I hate when people do this shit, it's so wildly disrespectful of you as an individual. Hoping you can make some push against it, but i know how these people tend to be. We're all here for you! ❤️

MapXilla

I think that means you’ve officially made it! \o/ Seriously though, I’m sorry you got caught up in this nonsense. It’s such garbage technology, seemingly for garbage people to do garbage things with. Your art is fantastic, and I’m certain that people support you for more than just the art they are getting.

DrWild33Fire

Probably won't make you feel much better, but hugging face did recently get messed up by a cyber attack. That cyber attack was done by an AI.

Lila Maria

I'm sorry this happened to you :(( Your work is fantastic, really, it always has such a dream-like quality I bet that no AI would ever come close to even replicating a single pixel of your talent Please keep doing what you're doing, because you're amazing at it 🤩

William Grant

I feel like you will always find those that will support you if you put out work with your heart. Even if AI slop makes the same or "better"(doubtful) there will always be people who value human hands, don't give up, and continue pouring your soul into your work!

Dimitri

I'm sorry this happened, and I totally understand that fear. I was a writer before I became a DM, and living in a world with AI really does feel like a horror shitshow sometimes. You're not alone in this, and just know that so, so many of us are so grateful for incredible artists like you!

Mandy Hoskins

Oh honey I am so so sorry!! Fuck AI, seriously, and everyone who uses it and steals the work of real artists. God I hate it so much. I've loved your maps for years! My d&d group has used many of them over the years. Thank you for doing what you do and putting art out into the world. And not just art, but art that helps other people create and tell stories and have adventures! I know this is all discouraging - I'm not even an artist but I struggle to not drown in despair over all this crap myself. Hang in there, happy to support you as long as you are doing this. 💛

Sebastian Billmann

Please don't be discouraged to continue creating art. I firmly believe that regulations will eventually be set in place to restore justice for real artists like you.

Atraxii

Fuck, that's rough. Sending you good energy 🙏 Art should never be stolen.

edgar pastrana

Don't worry m8 for every ai bro scummy "artists" there's another decent folk that supports real humans

Ninja Master

Might be a good idea to look into "ai poisoning" might not prevent your work from being stolen, but it would at least prevent them from getting any use out of datasets with your stuff in them

Jared Gill

Very sorry, some people are just assholes. To help balance the universe, I have upgraded my subscription to make it an annual one. Your work is awesome.

Grinning Gamer

I just started backing you, and I'm not going anywhere! I've got several games that all benefit from your maps, and I'm certain my players are feeling the heart you put into it when they step up to the plate and see the world unfurl before them. Keep doing what ya do!! It's super cool and inspiring to see!!

camelotcrusade

Oh, Krane, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Can I ask a dumb question, though? Lemme just put my derp hat on... So that that link you posted on Canva... is that the same stuff you've been sharing here on Patreon, just sans commentary? I want to make sure that's not a link to something AI created as a copy of you before I look through in case I missed something. Anyway, I'll also join the chorus of people who love what you do. I wish I could pledge dollars to match my heart, but I've always felt welcome regardless. 🙂

Daarka

I'm a lurker, but I wanted to comment on this. Specifically in response to your worries of why would people pay for your art if AI is reproducing it for free. Because what you're making is art, and what genAI produces is not. That's it. No matter how much the AI bros try to convince you that's not enough, it almost always is. They're REALLY loud about insisting that this is inevitable, about how they Can so they Will, regardless of consent, about how genAI does what creators do but fast and free. But that AI bubble is looking very poppable lately, and genAI simply cannot do what a human creator can. It never will be able to, because it lacks the human experience. It will never be able to replicate what you give to your maps by putting that heart in them that you're describing. People can tell the difference. And all of us patrons who collect these maps for our games, we've all had the option to use AI this whole time. We're giving our money to you and not some AI generator because THE PRODUCTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. If the tech bros want to have a power trip by vandalizing a site like Cara so they can make slop, then they can make it for the people who want slop. I don't want slop. I'd hazard to presume the majority of the rest of your subscribers don't want slop, either. The average person sees genAI images and associates it with slop. Every day that goes by, more people understand the toll all this is taking on our planet and our communities. Even as the technology improves, the social stigma gets worse. Even a DM who doesn't mind using low-quality images for VTT assets probably WOULD mind what their friends would think of them for making that choice. I am also an artist, it's my only source of income, and I also work VERY slow. I completely understand this hopeless feeling, but it's an illusion the AI bros are STRAINING to convince you of. None of the people who have proven to be willing to actually pay for my work in the past have ever implied, in any way, that replicating my work with AI would be more efficient than commissioning me. That's not something people who support artists say, that's something tech bros say. They don't even go to this school. They're just loud, and they're hoping to be so loud that you think what they're saying is a popular opinion. I learned a long time ago in my own journey with art that you don't need to undersell yourself to cater to the people who want cheap/free art. That's not your clientele. If you have to drop your prices comically low to get someone to commission you, that's not a supporter, that's a vulture. They won't keep supporting you when you ask for a living wage, they'll move on to find something else they can scavenge for minimal expense. The people who might generate imitations of your work were never going to support you here. They're just vandals who wanted the power trip of breaking something so they could feel big, and making off with something for minimal expense. They got their slop and their power trip. The people who give you their hard-earned money are doing it for hand-made art with your human heart poured into it; we're not in the market for slop. Besides, my players would (rightly) excommunicate me if I used AI slop for a map, are you kidding. I have self-respect, and most people in a creative space like this do, too.

Latte Labyrinth

Dang. Yeah, that sucks. You uploaded your maps somewhere to be free from AI and it got eaten by the bot hordes anyway x_x

Woodrow Major

Oh, that sucks. AI bros are the worst.

Adron Buske

This sucks so much, and I'm sorry to hear you're caught up in all this bullshit. There has to be a way to sue all these thieves into utter oblivion. We need to just throw the whole AI circus directly into the blender. For the past several months, somebody has been using AI to impersonate me and my (on indefinite hiatus) podcast, Fictitious. Authors are getting overly long but plausible sounding messages claiming to be from me and linking to my show, but with a faked email address. I have a scam alert on my website and socials now to warn people. But it's just so fucking frustrating. You create something in hopes of benefitting a community, and these scammers feel no guilt in using it for nefarious means, dragging our names and work into the gutter.
