In an incredible rare moment for our podcast, Mrs. P researched a religious, health food entrepreneur who turned out to NOT BE THE WORST PERSON ON EARTH! Bob and Charlee Moore founded Bob's Red Mill, the "nation's leading miller of diverse whole-grain foods."

For years, Bob's Red Mill Gluten free flour was one of the only things Mrs. P could eat, so when she heard of the founder's recent passing she started reading up on him, and was SHOCKED to find out he was a very nice person who wanted to do well by his community while feeding people.

Hearing Pearlbabia made me think my baby was fussing in the back ground as I was making dinner. Nope, asleep in bassinet. 🥴

Actually, Bob’s Red Mill Cafe is a solid spot. It’s not amazing, but people like it. We’ve got a lot of great (gluten free) restaurants in Portland (or as Fox News calls us “that liberal, hell hole”).

A small aside, Frederick Meijer / Meijers is from Grand Rapids, MI. It’s also still a family owned and privately held business. If ever on the west side of MI, the Frederick Meijer Garden and Sculpture garden is beautiful.

I didn't hear Guy Raz's pod about Bob but I swear someone did it. I thought it was Maintenance Phase but I can't find it in their list unless it was part of a Q&A episode. Maintenance Phasr def did a Brittany Dawn episode. Very good. Is it bad that I'm promoting Maintenance Phase? Not over Too Many Tabs but also great. Alex, I hope you'll come to Seattle! The baby sounds in this episode were beautiful and sweet!

Short_Range_Attack_Chicken

My bitter jaded mind kept thinking there would be something shitty would come up but pleasantly surprised that Bob was a decent person. Btw I can’t seem to figure out how to leave positive reviews on Apple Podcasts.

Fun fact - when I first moved to Boston 8 years ago, they were mid-de-payphoning the city. All the payphones were being removed/destroyed/etc. 2 years ago they started coming back. Nowhere near as many as there used to be but payphones seem to be gearing up to coming back in style and honestly I’m really happy about that.

We Never Sleep

Liked this episode alot, kept waiting for mr. P to go into the old "enzyte" commercial voice for bob...."This is bob and charlee, ever since bob gave up the cloth for his passion of nutritious stone milled grain, charlee is VERY happy"

Chekhov's Dolphin's are Sentient

If anyone heard dolphins screaming in the distance, they just heard the commentary about the lady who bought her house for $16k and had minor existential crisis in elder generation-z.

Newer listener and got excited/worried about this ep because I’m celiac and eat Bobs but then found out Mrs is celiac! If y’all ever visit Portland Oregon I will send out all the recs. Best town to be GF in

Places have gotten so much better at accommodating! My mom was first diagnosed in 2007 and it was so much harder then to go out to eat, etc. Seattle is pretty good...Portland is good at everything (I love Portland)

Let's Fucking Go Bob!!! Really was waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. My family has ran mills in Missouri for generations, we have a festival for it every year. Some Midwest shit, but a good time!! Love you guys 😊

DamnYouVodka

The baby noises really elevated this ep

Lumpy Space Princess

I’m not celiac, but I’m definitely switching to Bob’s steel cut oats after this episode. Also, I love the Pearlbabia noises! 🥰

I was so upset when I found out Bob had passed. I had used his products for years (celiac) but had only recently found out more about him because I rabbit-holed after reading a blurb about him and his business that popped up in my textbook for a management course. I was pretty crushed. Glad to hear this episode though <3

Chief Petty Officer

Yo you went with Soup for My Family Tour? I am honored y’all.🤣🥹🩷

Bob was born in 1929 drafted into US Army to serve in Korean War married Charlee 1953 and if they had three kids by the time they bought the LA gas station in 1955, seems like they got a head start on the relations. Also their gas station purchase of $6k would be equivalent to $70k today with average household being $3400 which would be equivalent to $39k

With Bob gone, the population of ethical business people has taken a large blow; I hope he's rescuing millstones in heaven like he would have wanted. But since we're speaking about a heart's true desire, I know I for one would love to rep the TMT brand with "Bully Alex into Literacy" merchandise. It's only a sad voice over and a heartfelt plea away from being a cultural touchstone.

We’ve had Brigg’s, Burt’s, and now Bob, we need Dr. Bronner’s to complete it all lol. I’ve tried reading that label and it’s a lot.

Hjonklike

Omg yes that’s such a great idea

Hjonklike

I’m so pleasantly surprised that I can continue to support Bob’s Red Mills.

Hjonklike

Such a great name.

I thought they were sound board noises until I remembered that the baby is in the room with them 🥹💖

let’s fucking go bob

Janinemania500

I grew up in Portland and I miss Fred Meyer. It's owned by Kroger now. They had a daycare inside the stores so parents could drop off their kids while they shop.

SheetzGang

I still want a Baker Creek Seeds episode! Just like Bob Moore, but definitely Nazis and grifters involved!

All Glory to the Hypno Toad

I've been buying his high protein oatmeal for years and didn't know anything about him until after he had passed. I hope we get to hear more pods with good people's histories. Unfortunately there are just too few of them out there.

Just popping in to confirm that people do indeed use goats milk soap! My favorite though is goat milk bath soaks, so luxurious 🙌🏻😂

Chief Petty Officer

I was shocked no one else even suggested it but it just felt so appropriate lol

Sierra

Goats milk soap is totally a thing! My younger cousin who owns goats it’s actually starting her goats milk soap business.

✨Sparkling Misandry✨

Bob's Red Mill is charming indeed and the gf pancakes are good! Honestly not sure if it's celiac safe to eat there, though, you'd need to check the apps. But it's a neat place and was super cute to see Bob wandering around, playing piano or playing board games with folks :) <3

Ayla F

I need to buy more Bob's 🤔

Serason

As a person allergic to wheat, I thank Bob every day. God bless his soul and I hope he has the biggest red mill in heaven

Vanessa Deleon

It made me soo damn mad when I found out about them! So mad! I took it personally lol

James the Lass (Guldan wears a merkin)

We have Jimmy Carter to thank for microbreweries! I personally despise IPAs, but it’s nice that we don’t all have to drink Budweiser anymore.

Kayla_from_delaware

Great. Now I won’t be able to buy anything but bobs expensive ahh flour

Deafleader

Random thought: We really need to platform more competent ethical or leftist businessmen lol

Budget Betty White

The way my head flew up when you mentioned Meijer. I’m currently on a shift at my job at Meijer. Looking at Bobs Red Mill flour

Ellie G.

When I was first diagnosed celiac and got the phone call with the news, I first called my parents. Then I went to turn on some YouTube for stress relief because I was overwhelmed, I randomly got an ad for Bob’s Red Mill gluten free flour. As angry as I was at Google analytics for apparently knowing what I was talking about to my parents and doctor, it was nice that the Bob’s brand was technically there for me before anyone else. I’ve been a loyal customer for years now so it’s great to hear the backstory.

Ellie G.

And it had to have been that because celiac disease wasn’t on my radar as a potential diagnosis. It was thrown on a blood test as a “well what you’re experiencing COULD be celiac but that’s not it” measure. (Of course that was the cause 😂) I knew what celiac disease was, but had no reason to be reading about it on the internet before that call.
