A few weeks ago Alex started ranting about dragons during Mrs. Pearlmania's cryptid episode. So many viewers demanded more about dragons, that Mr. P immediately grabbed a torch and delved deep into the stacks to find a HORDE of information on the history of dragons.

Marvel at dragon tales from across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Wonder at how Norse Thor is so much cooler than Disney Thor. Ponder how many dragon stories are just photocopies of older stories.

Probably should have called this episode OOPS! All Dragons!

I was nervous about going into election week without my second lore pearlman parents🥹

Loved this episode - just what I needed! 🐉. One of my favorite book series is Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern which has always stood out to me with it’s uniquely sci-fi dragons 🥰

Paige Morgan

8 minutes in! They used the same animation base for both snakes! Similar to Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty dance the same way.

I’ve been so panicked oh my lord

Today I learned that Ohio has skinks. I’ve never seen one. But this one time, I found a salamander on my patio under a planter. I put him in a yogurt container with some wet leaves, and I took him to a lake. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Pelicans are my favorite dinosaur

So many good, "ooooh, that makes sense" moments in this ep. I was hugely into dragons as a teen. I liked your basic, flying, GoT dragons. Just like my favorite Dinosaurs are the flying ones. Wait, no code word? Something about the Welsh?

Oh and I meant to tell you that last week, when I listened in my Apple Podcasts, the first ad was for "Jordan Peterson: We who Wrestle with God" tour. Blech! Get out of Pearlmania's media space, Jordan Peterson! His tour is coming to Seattle to Climate Pledge Arena, which seats 18,300! If he sells that many tickets...even half...I'm gonna puke.

I got about a quarter through the episode and realized you guys HADN’T HIT THE “NO NAZI” button. I legitimately thought it was an accident. I was wrong. 🤦‍♀️

You also have to remember that if a lot of these myths come from Proto civilizations, this isn’t really that far away from the end of the ice age and animals were fucking huge during that time. So these could’ve been some really big ass snakes.

Honestly, I feel like I would be less scared of a snake with horns than a normal snake. Idk something about how big it’s head would look compared to its body feels a bit silly.

We had a cat I named Falkor who lived to 18 years old. He was a Maine coon/Siamese mix. Gorgeous kitty. He just passed 2 years ago. My kids were crushed. They grew up together. My fave movie from my childhood.

Polish person from Jersey here to help you pronounce Wawel. The W is like a V so it sounds like vavel. EL is kinda like “well”. Idk if this makes sense 😂

Duchess Sprocket

thank goodness i listened to the whole thing before i made a comment about forgetting the welsh dragon. when i was taking some welsh language classes, they threw out the fact that the 'proper way to fly the welsh flag was with the back of the dragon to england.' cracks me up every time i see their flag- i have one on my car, so it's often :D

Demolition Dormouse

OK I’ll be the one to yell about it. The “W” in the Polish alphabet makes the “V” sound. So the name is pronounced “Vah-vel.” (Not from Poland, but from Chicago and married into a Polish fam).

The world snake was one of my favorite characters in God of War lol I loved his interaction with Mimir

Many different cultures around the world have stories of rabbits with antlers, and it turns out that rabbits can grow horn-like structures. When infected with a papilloma virus. The virus was discovered and named in Iowa in the 1930s, and today’s HPV vaccine, which helps prevent cervical cancer, can trace its roots back to then. Thanks Jackalopes!

Throughout this episode I was busting out in TROGDOOOORRRRR! BURNINATING THE COUNTRYSIIIIDE

Dragons horde wealth, blow smoke, and demand sacrifices. The reason we don't have any modern dragon stories is they've got PR teams now and acquire social media companies.

Better is a strong word, but thank you for checking in and for the bonus distraction today. Off to listen again while I wait for news.

Mariah

Yeah, dragon lore was a good choice for this week. Thanks pearlmans. Sorry this country…is what it is. 🙃❤️

Glad I had this episode to finish this morning 💙 the skinks in my yard probably have more rights than me. Love you guys 💙💙💙

Chekhov's Dolphin's are Sentient

My orange cat is named Faffy, after Faffy the Dragon from Dave the Barbarian, who in turn was named after Faffnier the dragon. I might have a world tree in my house 🤔🤔🤔🤔

“I didn’t KiSs Tanya!” Is my new favourite outta pocket Mrs. P comment ever.

The In-law Josie Wales

My reference for dragons is very different from Mr or Mrs P’s. My parents are creationists, and we were taught that dragons were dinosaurs that had survived the flood. And of course St George was real, Loch Ness monster is supposed to be a living dinosaur, ect. Even the flame-breathers had an explanation; they were postulated as hadrosaurs or parasaurolophus with cavities of plasma or flammable gas kept in their horns or foreheads. I haven’t heard this theory since the early 2000s, so I assume this was eventually debunked. In fiction, however, I do have some favorite dragons! Lady Trent’s Drakon are specialty bred reptiles (created by an Atlantis type civilization) that have helium (?) based physiology, so they are literally light enough to fly. And then my favorite, Temeraire’s world of dragons. They are LARGE animals (like the size of ships) that can fly due to inflationary hydrogen sacs in their lungs.

YoAnge

not me hearing the st George story and remembering they did this in a Bluey episode...

LilPup_13

Hey! Norse Pagan here! Your description of Thor had me in stitches! Well done! I don't have an orange cat, but: I hold the world snake in my hands!

Feral.Book.Dragon

Really enjoyed this episode, especially going into the Norse mythology. There is a really good book, The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec. It goes into Angrboda, the Mother of Monsters, story. If you decide to check it out I will say keep in mind it's for her POV and she wasnt there for a lot of Loki's shenanigans. It really focuses on her life and how she became The Mother of Monsters.
