It's been a dark time in America, but we can look to our recent history to see how this has happened before and how we can push back against it. George Dale was a newspaper editor in Muncie, Indiana who stood up to the Ku Klux Kln by naming, shaming, and mocking every member of that organization until they burned their own robes.

While this story is 100 years old, the topics, tactics and slogans used are still being deployed by extremists today.

I’m in Philly this weekend and I was thinking about you guys!

I want to note that the Patreon episodes have been a louder, normal level lately! Thank you for doing the magic to the volume!!

MrsCarterOfMars

Muncie local here waiting with bated breath for each last name hoping it's not an ancestor of someone I know. Also, my partner has lived in Delaware County his whole life and is the fifth generation of a farm that has been here since 1860 and we have never heard of this guy, which is a shame.

mr. buttons

what a good episode. i love this guy. something giving me a lot of hope has been getting out and helping locally. because thats where i feel those of us who dont have a national voice or major pull can actively affect change. its been great.

Mrs. P your explanation of women married Donald, JD, ect. reminds me of the women associated with Charles Manson. They were obviously under his spell in one way or another but they also did horrific things, ie Sharon Tate.

Overeasylikeyourmom

I can't wait to listen while I drive for work tomorrow! As a homecare nurse who drives up to 150 miles a day in Western NY, this podcast continues to save my sanity!

Re_Disgruntled_Vet_With_Bad_Knees

George Dale was a great man! Yo so my wife's uncle was like the "Grand Dragon".....now he doesn't really "know" where he is half the time. We like over a thousand miles away from her hometown LOL.

Pelicans are my favorite dinosaur

The thing you said about thinking "it's done" opening up the opportunity for it to happen again should be the show title! It's so true. I was born in Georgia in 1972. I went to Stone Mountain a few times Mainly my southern Baptist (former!!) church group took our youth groups, because of course they did.

Short_Range_Attack_Chicken

I was thinking as Mrs. P was how people infantilize women when in an abusive relationship, it triggered a thought about Stockholm Syndrome and maybe that has something to do with why people do that. Idk 🤷‍♂️

Grace Dayton

I couldn’t believe it when I saw this episode title!! I work in Muncie and used to live there, my niche worlds are colliding 🥹 Not proud to be in and of Indiana, but what a small world after all.

ooky_spooky_gloopy_gloppy

My financial planning class was also a Dave Ramsey dvd when we moved to Mississippi, when we lived in Wisconsin it was only marginally better but at least it was an actual teacher.

The Mailman

George Dale was a fucking amazing guy

Moth_Goblin

I grew up close to stone mountain and lake lanier before I learned the history of it. And I remember going there for the 4th of July back in the early 2000's and it was a pretty cool laser show but now as an adult knowing the history I definitely question everything from my past lol

RaiHoneybb 🦆

There was an article on Substack that I read that talked about the women who are with conservative men. I can’t remember the name but it’s a good read

So… future episode on the Salvation Army? (Hell yeah George Dale!)

Rookie

What a great man, that George Dale.

review_of_academic_reviews

Hell yea George Dale!! My grandpa was born in ‘35 in the hills of southern WV. He says the KKK would come beat your knees in if you were pulling welfare but able to work. One of his neighbors had a club foot and they pulled him out of his house late at night and beat the hell out of him so he’d go to work instead of pulling disability. Anyway, MAURICE HILLEMAN FOR MY VACCINES!! Paul Offit (a Philly native) wrote a short bio ab him but Maurice Hilleman to this day makes Merck pharmaceuticals maintain a colony of chickens bc of his legacy 🫡

George Dale was a great man and this was a great episode!

GinaBoBina

George Dale was a great guy and we need more people like him, especially now!!

Sweet Dreams System

George Dale was a great man. Thank you for these last 2 episodes, they have made a huge difference in my outlook! 💜

Karma Kamille

Learning that Khamillia’s was a thing makes me feel vindictive as a black queer Kamille hehehe

Red Moon

Helen Jackson sounds a lot like that bitch Michelle Smith and Lawrence Pazder who wrote Michelle Remembers (the book that fueled the Satanic Panic of the 80s and 90s)

SayaMatsuki

George Dale was a great man. We need more people like him

Not to make this about me But I waited all week for my dope ass username to be announced

Mrs P! I've been thinking about this. Re: Women's Agency It occurs to me that there should be a recognized difference between losing one's agency (or having it taken), and /surrendering/ it. Some willingly give over their power to the embodiments of fascism and patriarchy for the same reasons as anyone who "obeys in advance". The simplest answer I can reason. The only thing more gross to me than the villain, is the wormy sycophant gurgling "yes and" behind them.

Mother_Goots

I loved this episode, on my second listen through. I live mere minutes from Muncie, IN and my Great Grandparents lived in Muncie when Dale was Mayor. Couldn't get a sitter for the Indianapolis Show!

Mother_Goots

Wanna be pearlmaniac friends? I'm over here in Anderson, IN feeling much the same way.

George Dale is the Fishbine for the KKK!

Must have missed your name on the list, we are DEFINITELY going to shout you out I. The next episode. Sorry for the mess up~ Mrs. P

simplebrute

apologies if I've already shared this before but the most interesting story surrounding the murders of civil rights workers in Philadelphia, MS forever immortalized in a passionate soliloquy by the movie Mississippi Burning didn't actually happen according to Colombo crime family hitman, Gregory Scarpa. apparently the FBI was at a deadend finding the missing kids and suspected they had been murdered, but without a witness or physical evidence they couldn't move forward. so they brought Scarpa down from New York who proceeded to kidnap a local klansman, put a gun to dude's head and miraculously those kids' bodies turned up

Doc Squid 23

George Dale was a great man!!!!

Sly Cooper

George Dale was a great man

Mrs. Love

George Dale was a great man! I definitely needed to listen to this. It allowed me to hope that since we did it before we can do it again and get out of this shithole that our country is in.

George Dale was a great man!

Vibin’ in the mind palace

George Dale was a great man! Loved this episode - gave me hope and inspiration 💪🏻🎉

Mrs P. Not smarter than you, but when you talk about how differently society and media treat the women around shitty men and how they are often infantilized or at least not held accountable for their role in their partner's bullshit really comes down to ... The Patriarchy. A big portion of American society still sees a submissive or at least obedient wife as the norm. A man who is loud, eccentric, or boisterous is celebrated and a woman who does the same is a bitch or a harpy or some other derogatory, gendered term. Obviously this outlook is not held by everyone, but it is still ingrained in our culture at a deep level, especially among the sort of people who support these shitty men.

Demolition Dormouse

Oooh Mrs. P if you’re interested in reading more about whiteness and feminine fragility the book “White Tears/Black Scars” by Ruby Hamad is a banger. And for more about women, the 2nd wave Klan, and the Midwest, peep “Women of the Klan” by Kathleen M. Blee and “Fever in the Heartland” by Timothy Egan (the Egan audiobook is ril good).

Pearlmania500

YOU ARE ON THIS WEEKS LIST. I just confirmed it. - Mr. P

✨Sparkling Misandry✨

George Dale was a great man! This inspired me to finally look up John T Flores, mentioned in Willie Nelson's "Shotgun Willie": Now, John T. Floores was a-working for the Ku Klux Klan At six foot five, John T. was a hell of a man Made a lot of money selling sheets on the family plan Evidently John T. Floores owned a (still) very famous roadhouse in Texas where Willie developed much of his early career. From what I've been able to find, this was mostly Willy's commentary on John T Floores being a businessman who would sell anything to make a buck, rather than an indictment of him actually being a clan member 😆 Thanks for the LEARNING! Now I have to go listen to Willie

nixthefemby

Omg. It's Nicki the femby. (Fem-bee) Like that was in Bored Gay Werewolf. 😂 I do love femboys though. 😂

AphillyatedJawn215

This episode reminded me of when I first played Red Dead Redemption 2 and I found out Klans people where in the game I kid you not I probably spent 4 days avoid all missions and side stories just to exterminate the Klan ...as a Latino man that felt amazing 🤩💯😂

Amber N

I just wanna say y’all inspired me to finally join the library again. I even checked out and read this month’s book club already! 💙

Bubsey_Wubsey_Has_No_Hair

Ad someone who grew up in Indianapolis, I have things to say: 1. I’m pretty pissed that this is the first time I’m learning about George Dale. This dude is a legend. 2. Muncie/Delaware County is notoriously racist. 3. There’s a town just east of Indy called New Palestine. Their high school mascot is the dragons and the big legend is that it’s because the grand dragon of the kkk lived there. At least that was what I always heard. 4. Yay, Indiana? I’ve since moved to a much more racist place: East Tennessee. Because I apparently hate myself. The only difference is that here in Tennessee, they’re more open about their racism than in Indiana.

ValPal

I told my sister about what I learned from this episode and she agreed all up until the modern history references…. Sometimes I just… 😫

An autographed photo of Jesus Christ.

George Dale was a great man, I should know. And as for Dave Ramsey, we don't invest in real estate, those shitty houses are all his.

Detective Dips

To side note on the points being made around 58:30…this infantilizing of women who attach themselves to fascist or evil men privilege has never been afforded to black women. Everything goes back to racism 😮‍💨 And also, this history lesson was fucking EXCELLENT, all the right random tabs in all the right spots coming together…makes me feel less crazy 😂 more history episodes please!
