Carmine is an approved dye for use in food, yeah. But true red velvet cake got its color from molecules in cocoa reacting with acids from buttermilk/vinegar adding a red hue to its deep rich brown color. Course now it's most often dyed red. Modern Dutch-processed cocoa is neutralized so it won't react with acids, so dye has to be added, but there are other cocoa powders processed differently.

Let me tell you, as a painter, there is a HUGE difference between color theory and color practice. Red, blue and yellow are both warm and cool. A cool red and a warm blue do not make a pretty purple. They make mud.

ALSO the red in red velvet cake is now red dye, was carmine but traditionally was because the recipe called for something called red dutched cocoa and buttermilk which would result in a bright red color. To get the real red velvet taste today mix some dark chocolate, vanilla and a small bit of sour cream. Or you can get dutched cocoa on Amazon. It’s basically just a mild chocolate with a bit of something sour in it.

Campari used to be Carmine too, now just dyed. Funny enough, the common houseplant pest mealybugs are in the same suborder and will also turn red when smushed or sprayed with alcohol. The ones used for carmine are a different family and feed just on prickly pear cactus.

I'm thrilled that modern shows appear to be moving away from that trope. Like I'm struggling to think of any That Scene (TM) moments in Dungeon Meshi. Meanwhile even a reeboot of an older 90s show with some of the most egregious ick redacted made my enby ace partner bounce off of it. (I'm looking at you Ranma 1/2) Sometimes your faves are problematic (something something something giving mice cookies) and that's ok. That doesn't mean it's good for all audiences (like small children who don't need to be spoon fed right wing propaganda about helping people in need).

I’m not saying tswizz is a nazi but I find it interesting that someone whose fans applaud them as a mastermind who hides all these Easter eggs in their merch etc all of a sudden can’t see the weird undertones of opalite or how the lightning bolts could be misconstrued. A whole team was looking at that before it rolled out and no one thought anything of it, which is weird cuz that’s one of the things in design that they specifically warn people to watch out for. Even if there’s a small chance it could be taken the wrong way you’re still supposed to alter the design to prevent that by adding an extra point etc. So either no one on the team noticed which is interesting or it was done intentionally. Also idk if anyone saw the creator who has the custom carabiner business and accidentally used a slur in the name, but THAT is how you respond when you genuinely make a mistake that you want to clear up. Are their more important things happening that we can talk about, sure, but in the current climate it should be ok to question certain symbols etc because art is inherently political and dog whistles thrive on plausible deniability.
