Lake Lanier in Georgia is hiding a dark legacy of racism, Lake Baikal is deep enough scientists don't even know whats at the bottom, and Lake Superior's rough waves and chilly conditions have preserved it's many victims.

Oh man I’m so excited to listen later

About Martha Stewart Paint Colors For many years, Martha Stewart provided paint and color collections through partnerships with paint manufacturers and sold them through various home centers. A few years ago, Martha Stewart decided to stop selling paint and as a result, Martha Stewart MS223 Garden Clog Green is no longer available anywhere.

Chekhov's Dolphin's are Sentient

I wonder if saying you were colorblind would have gotten you out of helping that lady out of the color pallete of books 🤔😂

GoblinMom

Sounds like Mrs p is, as my wife describes, a spooky racoon goblin.

Rockstache

Same with me and also facehuggers from Alien. My older brothers scarred me with Aliens.

Rockstache

I have to save this for the drive back to Wisconsin next Saturday, but Spooky Lake Month is among my favorite TikTok events. It's also the only TikTok event I know, so...

SPOOKY LAKES SPOOKY LAKES SPOOKY LAKES

Kay W

World War Z is truly an amazing book!! I wish someone would do a mini series of the actual book, not that trash movie with the same title!!

Prof Brown

Me convinced Geo is gonna be a guest and waiting for the "Uuuum yes hello! It's Spooky Lake Month where we're doing 31 days of haunted hydrology..."

Elfishparsley

Mr P & Mrs P both have AWE 🥰 TYSM. just different special interests. Mr P is politics and historical trivia. Mrs P is spooky books and gluten free baking.

ImTheProblem

I just realized that Alex must have the same type of adhd (also unmedicated) as my fiance, because these are the exact tangents we go on, and we don't even have a podcast.

Neural Damage

Spooky Lakes is my favorite 90s talk show host

Pelicans are my favorite dinosaur

Just saw the topic and starting to listen. Wondering if you'll cover Lake Sidney Lanier. I was born in a town n Georgia on that lake. Left GA at age 13 and never heard the history of that lake (even though a black boy in my class drowned in it in 1983) until my 30s. WHITEWASHING SUCKS. I swam in that lake every summer week of my childhood!

Tyrannosaurus Bex

Oh perfect topic for while I'm sitting in a kayak on the Delaware canal

Best Little Divorce House in Erie Pennsylvania

Hello from the shores of Lake Erie! Thank you for finally acknowledging Lake Erie’s superiority. I always knew we were your number one. Given this concession you can use my WiFi on your camper trip.

ScrambledPhoenixEggs

Heading back to unmedicated ADHD myself because my current med is making my BP skyrocket. 😭😭😭

Silly Little Bard

Ngl, throughout the first section, I've been thinking, GEO TAUGHT US ALL ABOUT LAKE BAIKAL.

Silly Little Bard

Even with medicated ADHD, you're still gonna have tangents. You just get better at getting back on track. Sometimes, I'm even able to put a pin in something for later.

Amanda

Gonna need you guys to follow @lakelanierofficial on threads, RIGHT AWAY if you aren’t already 🤓

ImTheProblem

Yeah, they are militant about BP while you're on it. I have to take my own BP at a specific time after I take my meds to make sure my heart won't explode while I'm on the ridilin 😂

Khunt_Fartz

Yes! I was totally expecting a shout out to Geo for spooky lake month inspiration at least!!

shelse

If I pay y'all here but then also watch the YouTube with ads does that mean I'm paying you twice? Because if that's the case I'm gonna keep doing it. I wanted to be a planeteer so bad. But I'm just starting the episode so I'll be back.

Prof Brown

If Mrs. P doesn't know about Spooky Lake month she's about to go down a 197 video tiktok rabbit hole

OneGoodKnight

I'm going to call Lake Lanier by its dead name of Oscarville from now on, "Oh you mean Lake Oscar?" just to see who gets it

junebug

hi, michigander here. it’s called lake superior cuz it’s the northern most great lake, not because it’s better (though it is my personal opinion that it is the best of the great lakes).

Silly Little Bard

I feel like we need “This episode is about lakes” merch

FrankensteinsMomager

Finally, someone else who has read World War Z and can verify its brilliance and the complete dumpster fire the movie was. Max Brooks, the author, wrote another book about big foot and tech bros that’s entertaining.

shelse

Mr. P, excellent Lightfoot. You SHOUTED OUT MY HERITAGE SPECIFICALLY! Born in Nova Scotia, my mom is from Newfoundland (it's pronounced New-fin-land). Those are my songs and my people. I know more than one person whose lost someone at sea. I am now realizing that and that's strange. You are both AuDHD, like me, and that's why I feel such a deep kinship with you. I get off on the exact same tangents and I rant like this to my husband and children every day, down to the rant on lawns. Fuck, I hate lawns. The mayor in charge of Jaws was in charge of the global pandemic response, metaphorically. Mr. P's description of his ideal spooky lake is exactly how I would describe the lake I live on. I call our road axe murder lane and my bestie turned around the first time she visited because she didn't think anyone would love out this far. Fucking love. Mrs. P, come be a spooky lake girly with me in NB, Canada! Maine vibes without being Maine. We can yell about how stupid lawns are in the woods after we've got to an estate sale (literally what I did today). Too many synchronicities.

shelse

It's controlled chaos. Still chaos, but like, I got it.

amanaybeak

Kinda rude y'all didn't have Geo Rutherford, the patron saint of spooky lakes on here, but okay.

WildflowersNWhiskey

SPOOKY LAKE MONTH Just got home from work and I'm settling in to start the episode, but I have been so hype for this ALL DAY. I have ADHD and I work in a comic/collectibles store. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS for something to hold my attention through an ENTIRE WORK DAY? I'm so excited.

WildflowersNWhiskey

Literally this has been the background sound in my head at work all day today 😅

Ding_Dong_Bitch_Mitch_is_Dead

World War Z is the only book to give me nightmares. I reread it every couple of years. I've started listening to the audio book again middle of last week. Crazy that it was mentioned. Lolol

WhateverTheHeckThisIs

Commenting only 14 min in - I Know What You Did Last Summer - classic late 90s teen slasher set in a harbor town. How dare you not know this Sarah Michelle Gellar classic.

WildflowersNWhiskey

I can usually put a pin in something for later, sure. But I rarely get to choose when "later" is going to be. 😅 Will it be 3 weeks from the day I needed to remember a thing, at 2AM? Probably.

PumpkinKing008

Been listening long enough now that when y'all mispronounce words (i.e. "corpse" instead of "corps") I don't even notice. Instead I chuckle at the "hoagie mouth", but as someone from both the Midwest AND the south, I absolutely will not judge! Edit: I typed this silly comment before the story got VERY dark... 😅

Laid-off bureaucrat with gingivitis

I heard on NPR today (the show was either “It’s Been A Minute” or “The Sam Sanders Show”) that Jaws is most definitely a horror movie

Ash

Yall have GOT to find Geo on Tik Tok for Spooky Lake Month. She even has a Spooky Lake coloring book!

yondertallguy

Two spooky lake podcast eps in the same month?! It’s not even my birthday month. If anyone wants more science with your spooky lakes check out Ologies’ Haunted Hydrology episode 👀

yondertallguy

Also please for the love of my ears balance Mr P’s mic w/ Mrs P’s. Put more compression on him or something, I have to turn it up to hear Mrs P and then smack the volume back down when we get an Alex Rant™

Caroline

I've lived in Georgia my entire almost 40 years and the one place we all know (or should know) not to go to is Lake Lanier. There's at least one dummy who gets taken in by the Lake every summer.

Caroline

The county Lake Lanier is in is Forsyth. Pronounced four-sigh-th

Caroline

I followed ologies last week but haven't listened yet

m

The Great Lakes have waves, Alex. Visit Erie.

m

I don't like not being able to see the bottom either, so I just don't wade very far in. But it's super calming to sit on the beach and just look out over the lake, listen to the waves... Or be on a boat on the lake.

m

100%!

Dr. Weiner-Tits McGee, Esquire

You say a lot about the terrible history of white violence against black communities, and white women weoponizing themselves to harm, so I ask you to please not hand wave the Taylor Swift issue. Please please please subdue the knee jerk lib response, and see how her attacking a black woman from her place of power is unacceptable. Again, knitting cult lady on YouTube please guys, I need you to be morally consistent please

SwampAstronaut

Mr. P not thinking Jaws is a horror movie is his most controversial opinion.

Margaret Peffy Margie Maggie

Listen I am only at the beginning of this episode but I will tell you I have made NO ATTEMPT to enter a lake since 1981 when at the age of 10 I saw Friday the 13th for the first time. You can't see what's in there! Under the water! No thank you!

Kayla_from_delaware

As a new castle county Delawarean, I do not claim anything south of the county line.

Kayla_from_delaware

Oh hell no. Not a shot I’m getting in a lake that has buildings in it. I hate all of that

Pariah Carey

We sang The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in music class all through elementary school. I always thought it happened in the early 1900s because it's such an old timey song. Anyway one night I fell asleep watching TV and woke up and the CBC was airing a documentary about the wreck and I found out it happened in the 70s. It's so weird that we sang that song for years but no one ever actually taught us much about it.

Nikki Ann

I will only swim in pools. I’m not getting into monster soup tyvm.

An Earth Worm Having A Seizure

I’m sorry to be that person, I’m from Michigan so it’s in my blood, but the great lakes definitely have beaches and waves. They’re huuuuge and amazing!

Kristen Cocciante

He says he wants to insult every state but so far all Californias gotten is compliments for the hot evil trickster currently running the state, so I think we’re winning ✌️

Cameron (not the actor) kirk

If you have never seen a great lakes freighter it's nearly impossible to understand how freaking big those ships are. Now to imagine a ship that if it had gone straight down with the bow on the lake bed it would still be sticking over 300' feet above the water to Disappear With literally no Trace is mind-boggling

Nikki Ann

Also I live about 2 miles away from Lake Erie. Fermi makes it super eerie for sure. Haha.

KAMacher1991

I get the distrust of still water, but mines more seasonal. Spring/Summer: nice, calm, and relaxing. Fall/Winter: something’s in that water and it’s gonna get me.

Kstormo

The comment on Halloween candy prices. I hear you! No candy for me this year... Maybe when it goes on sale.

Kstormo

Check out his newer one about sasquatch. Devolution. Love it. Definitely fuel for nightmares.

Ding_Dong_Bitch_Mitch_is_Dead

@kstormo It's on my shelf and has been on my TBR for a while now. I'll need finally get to it when I finish WWZ. Thanks for the reminder!

Amber

Leaving the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan out of the Lake Superior convo is wild. Especially because that is where Whitefish Point and Keweenaw (key-weh-nahw) are located 😢

mechengr17

Dangerous Animals is a slasher film set on the beach that released this past Summer

Abster5000

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. They are having a memorial Beacon lighting at Split Rock lighthouse just north of Duluth,MN on November 10th. You should make the voyage to Duluth and perhaps you will get to witness the fury of Superior during "the gales" of November. I live about a quarter mile from the lake and love its many moods. Hoping we get some good storms this year!

Moth_Goblin

I grew up in Cherokee County which is sister county to Forsyth County and we would go to Lake Lanier during the summer always without my dad (who is black). he always said he never got a good feeling going through there. also if I remember correctly the Cumming Georgia which is right next the lake is a sundown town.

Amber Sanchez

For those of us in California that have no idea what Rhode Island OR Delaware looks like because you also went to a sh*tty school, Lake Baikal is over 60 times larger than Lake Tahoe according to internet AI that I can’t shut off no matter how hard I try.

mechengr17

Where did they hardwave it?

SimoneJ

As soon as Georgia was mentioned I knew it was about Lake Lanier. I know a celebrity from Glee drowned trying to save her son in 2020 and so many others. Thank you for doing a deeper dive into the lake because I never knew the events that led them to flooding the town. Also, with Mrs P and Alex mentioning M Night, I’m still waiting on Mrs P to tell the story about her not giving an organic apple to a celebrity (I don’t remember who the celebrity was). It was mentioned in the Starbucks episode I think? When the story about the Olsen twins and the barista giving one of them milk was told

Nick Palmer

Can we please get an “opps all rants” episode. Pretty please.

Alanna

I refuse to have a thread’s account. But I’m still curious… so what’s going on with the lakelanierofficial account?

Dr. Weiner-Tits McGee, Esquire

I suppose "downplay the situation" as people just seeing things and making something out of nothing. It was a bummer to hear, they are usually more curious and, you know, open tabs about the topic. "Just lightning bolts" with no other context, without what she put in her latest album, was disappointing. Fellow Mech Engineering here

Alanna

What makes it the best in your opinion?

Alex and Rachel Trautman

Also, dang, more Michigan hate. There's more Michigan touching Lake Superior than any of those other states listed. /cry

TheChaosPierogi

A) the soggy bottom boys singing is the best part of O Brother Where Art Thou B) as someone born and raised in MI ( temporarily living in Tennessee and ironically moving to the Keweenaw Peninsula in April ) Alex was close to the correct pronunciation. I’ve threatened many a men to watery grave in superior 😆 “ good bye earl your ass into Lake Superior “

Shelby Armstrong-Idsenga

Mrs. P when you pronounced corps as "corpse" I had a violent flashback to early middle school where I had to give a speech about the army corps only to have the teacher tell me after I FINISHED THE ENTIRE SPEECH "Hey just a heads up it's pronounced core" WELL THEN WHY IS IT SPELLED THAT WAY THEN???

Amanda

It’s an anonymous user who makes lil jokey jokes about the haunted nature of the lake, to include all of the lore mentioned in this pod and more. Particularly active during the summer months when people are actually doing lake activities.

Buckeye State Bum

TMT takes on Spooky Lake Month (credit to Geo) we stan Lake Baikal

m

I second this.

ThenIWhispered

"Don't judge a book by it's cover." Okay, but hear me out: John Scalzi's "Starter Villain" That cover was totally how I judged it. WORTH IT.

ThenIWhispered

Captain Planet - He's our power MAGNIFIED, and he's fighting on the planet side. Spoiler alert: We can't actually magnify our power nearly enough to match Cap. His goal of "down to zero" was always impossible to achieve. *But* that didn't mean we should just give up. I hate this administration. WTF. Also, the Russian lady has the Tulsi Gabbard swath of hair. Take that for what you will.

Pearlmania500

You’re gonna want to check out this week’s crashing out for that.

junebug

i really like how clear and cold the water is. swimming in it is so refreshing. and beautiful!

Get_Mrs_P_Her_Dang_Chickens

TIL that Siberia isn't just some random part of russia. ITS LIKE 80% OF RUSSIA???!!! Also O Brother where art thou is a banger of a movie. Love the soundtrack

Witch Of The Waste

Just wanted to let Alex know that my grandma told me stories about walking over the Niagara river when it froze over to Canada back when that was no big deal

jessimightpanic

Sorry but Jaws is a horror movie. Got to go with Mrs p on this one.

Erin

This is a BANGER of an episode. it’s got EVERYTHING

March

Here is my fun-fact about lake baikal: if you discount the rest of the ocean on top of it, baikal is the *same depth* as the Marianas trench. Like, from tip of Marianas trench to the top of the trench itself is the same depth as baikal. It's basically as if you transported the trench onto shore.

CaughtUp_NowSad

Absolutely one of my favorite movies, and I WILL watch the whole thing. I still quite it quite a bit. "We thought you was a toad"!

Smiling, nodding, didn’t get the joke

Lake Lanier’s threads account is phenomenal and bumps it up the list by so much. As bodies decompose in certain areas of Lake Superior, the fats break down and form a soap-like substance, called saponification. It’s because there’s not enough oxygen in the water to support bacterial growth. Also keeps bacteria from breaking down the ships. I hope by the time the after party ep for this one comes out, our Pearl-parasocial pals have watched Spooky Lake Month compilation videos.

m

You could do a stand up gig in Erie. There's a come named Keller's. You have to visit Presque Isle; it's beautiful. From there, you can see one of the top 10 sunsets in the world.

m

Also, everything to do in Erie is pretty cheap. Seriously inexpensive vacation if you're used to Philly/NYC pricing.

a_bitch_named_sam

The sense of relief I felt knowing M. Night Shamalamaland's wife sucks is what I needed this week. Justice for ATLA!!!

Peach

46 minutes in and OH BOY if you wanna know about the systematic brainwashing the daughters of the confederacy have done to generations of white southern women just let me know I can give a three hour TED talk on it. My sources are being raised wealthy and white in Alabama.

Erin Harris

Yesss! I came to comment about Lake Lanier's threads account

Lisa Paglicci

Mrs. P’s first ghost investigation should be at a lake and Mr. P is the equipment caddy.

Shea

Yesss, come to Erie. You can do Waldameer Park with Pearlbabe, Lake Erie (because of course) AND you can do a ghost tour at Hotel Conneaut (which is only about an hour out of Erie and it's on a different lake).

Coco Boomslang

Uuuuuuuuum, yes, hello! I ❤️ Spooky Lakes 😚

Hey-hey it’s Wah-say

Minnesotan here. Lake Superior is superior 🙃 #1 gotta respect her!

a_bitch_named_sam

Another reason lake Lanier is spooky, if your prom is there your prom will suck. How do I know? My senior prom was at Lake Lanier Islands like .... What redneckery is this

Lightly Mothered

In honor of scary things Alex, I a Patreon member would love to see you run a 5K with Phil
