My roommate and I have been trying to find a new apartment in VT. I can't even begin to tell you how many listings looked like amazing, gorgeous apartments at a really good price only to find that you were only allowed to live there until May because obviously they're going to rent it short term for the summer 🙃 it's especially insidious because there is VERY LITTLE housing here to begin with. And it's not just that Air BnB hosts are stealing all this housing; theyre renovating and decorating these gorgeous homes and just hoarding it from people who would love to live there. I truly fucking hate how greedy these people are. May they rot in hell for all eternity 🙏

This entire episode unlocked the memories in my brain from working at Airbnb. And I got to work on their fancy task force automation and my goodness is was a hot mess. Especially for removing the party accounts and all the false positives it was making. Another aside, I work in tech and actively fighting any and all automation to remove the customer service experience. You can only imagine being an autistic emphatic engineer who’s the only in the room screaming not everyone knows what social media is and we need to explain that in our digital inclusion outreach surveys targeting towards people who still have Obama phones! Thank you for doing this deep dive on them!!! 🥹🥹

So I don’t like staying at my friends’ and family’s houses if I don’t have to, so the thought of an AirBnB has always been uncomfortable to me. I’ve never stayed in one, and when all of the horror stories started surfacing, it really solidified the icky feeling I always had.

I worked at tech startup in my early 20s (I was young and naive) and this episode is giving me flashbacks. The company was launching in my country and we had 4 people, all under 30, to handle everything. I was layedoff at the start of covid (my country has decent labour laws so I got a decent settlement) I didn’t realise how anxious and stressed I was until I was forced to complete stop. The recovery from that burn out was brutal!

I share your frustration with automated systems. Many times automated systems just don’t work. One of my aunts had an extremely hard time applying for Medicaid and later making funeral arrangements for her late mother (my grandma) because her records made had discrepancies that an automated system just couldn’t account for. Specifically, her legal name and birth date as written on her birth certificate were not the ones she had used her entire life. She used a different spelling of her first name than was on the birth certificate and the birthdate she used was 3 days before that listed on her birth certificate. It was even a struggle to get the correct name that she used in her obituary and on her tombstone because of a funeral home policy for those to match the birth and death certificates (a policy I can only assume was meant to be transphobic but ended up causing a headache for the family of a dead cisgender woman). Grandma was born in 1929, at a time before things like Social Security even existed and people could be a lot more flexible with their legal names and even their birthdates. I don’t know if she chose to change these, or if her birth certificate was just messed up. But she deserves to be represented in death according to her identity in life.

My last name is 2 letters and people still get still can’t spell it. I even do the phonetic alphabet and they still don’t understand. It also made my work email 4 letters long (it was supposed to be 7 total characters, first and middle initials and the first 5 characters of your last). My manager was trying to get me access to a site needed for the job, and the person who was in charge wouldn’t give me access cuz he didn’t believe that was my email

hiiiii, in regards to the name of the evil pole it will be hard to pronounce but also write phonetically in English bc there's a few sounds that exist in polish and not in english so anything with sz cz ci si ś ć zi ź dz dź rz ż will be hard to translate ó and u are the same sound (u) ó was pronounced differently but through out the ages it was lost similar case to ch and h same sound only h, in regards to his evil business practices in Poland they're called januszex from most common male name and english sounding ending becouse they often brake labor laws or find loopholes in poorly made regulations (i suppose that's why its mixed with English) we also have a saing on something as free American which means doing whatever you want (not in positive light) coming back to topic it's great episode and fills you with hope of Airbnb's end, loveeee from Poland <3

I used to AirBnB host and rented out my in-law suite at my house and I loved it ... For a while. I met lots of great people from around the world, I would take them to dinner, hang on the porch, and some sent me gifts after their stay. I kept the price pretty reasonable because it was a place to sleep not a place to hang out and vibe. My location was PRIMO there were no hotels in the area, neighborhood was cool, and there were only a few other rentals in the area. I had the basics, kept it clean, had a roku, and it was private. Things were great for years but after COVID, things got weird. Our fees went up and guest were expecting hotel quality everything. One guy gave me two stars because the plants in the porch were dead... It was November in Atlanta. Another guy brought in a roach to try and say it was infested and get refunded but wasn't going to leave (this was a scam, I kicked him out). Finally, I took it down after the founders bent the knee and I rented the room out to a college kid for way less. The stress of keeping the room up wasn't worth it anymore. Now, I don't even stay at them anymore. The last one I stayed at was my Bach in Montreal and it legit was a "le construction zone".

My bachelorette party and I were looking at airbnbs to rent for a trip to Pittsburgh in 2020 (this was early covid times when it wasn't a "big deal"), and those prices came out to be more than staying at a hotel. And there were rules! I said this is a scam and haven't personally sought out an airbnb since.

Also while I was working at a daycare, I had a family that decided to move to Florida because of their no mask policies. 🫠 The crazy not so crazy part is that the mom was one of those health nut parents. Like always packed the gross healthy snacks. No preservatives, no dyes, etc. So like hypervigilant on what their child put in their body, but contracting covid is fine??? 🫠

You talking about PPE loans made me have an adhd flashback. I'm a teacher. We were virtual for a year. My students lived in areas with such bad infrastructure that they could barely participate in virtual classes. So I made home visits daily. Despite all of that, that year was the first and only time in my life that I've ended the month with money in my checking account, because so much of my money goes right back in to the classroom, and I was able to get the city to pay for essentials these kids needed, as long as I was willing to get it to them. I was one of those teachers you saw on social media, teaching in kids' front yards. I never caught Covid in that time, even when I was escorting kids to the ER. In the years since then, I've caught Covid annually.

Super late comment because ive been busy with a newborn. But I was a travel nurse in 2021, and airbnb by this pt even outpriced us causing the Airbnb bubble to pop. Many travel nurses by this point had to buy their own campers or go back to staffing jobs. I personally got my rental off of a site made specifically for travel nurses (prior to covid).
