In a more serious tone Mrs. P. looks at the History of Pennhurst State School and Hospital and the human rights violations that went on inside. She answers why its offensive that the current owners turned it into a haunted house, and are trying to make it a data center.

Slothy with the munchies

thank you mrs.P! I’m so glad you are talking about this it needs to be heard. This is a topic that i’m passionate about. America has tortured the mentally ill and disabled since the founding and it disgusts me. just knowing we mock these poor people for a quick scare is disrespectful.

The Lore Lodge guys, crossing my fingers they aren't hard core right wing and I just missed that, have been campaigning and hitting town halls about this topic for about a year now. This is goddam ridiculous and we don't need these bullshit data centers.

I love you Mrs. P. It is always that deep. Your passion should be what we all feel.

Not-so-fun-fact: In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 1971, most of the oompa lumpas were played by those with dwarfism from the US and the UK. Because of the holocaust, there were no european dwarfs old enough to play oompa lumpas in 1971

Hoo boy, I'm glad you're talking about this, hard as the subject is. The nightmare history of asylums and institutions is a piece of disability history that I hardly ever see anyone outside the disability community discussing. I'm especially glad you've brought up the prison industrial complex in this context. The fact that institutionalization is in fact a form of incarceration is still hard to explain to able-bodied neurotypicals. To this day, too many parts of our social infrastructure say it's okay to strip someone of their rights, freedoms, and basic human dignity if they don't conform to the socially constructed template of a "normal" or "healthy" body/mind. For one that is still around today that the disability community has been trying to shut down for years, look up the Judge Rotenberg "Educational" Center.

Everyone please check on your friends with disabled kids, I assure you we are not ok right now

Big hug mrs P. Right there with you

Aww Mrs P….my heart broke for you this episode. I was against using these places as spooky attractions before, but my feelings were not very strong about it. I now feel more strongly about the disrespect and the erasure of the true horror. I knew that the inmates were treated badly, but you said a lot of details about the entire story that I didn’t know before. I didn’t know just how bad it was. I know that the research lies heavy on your heart, so thank you for doing the work to digest it all and making it easy to comprehend for all of us. It’s important that we don’t forget and you are helping to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I had to stop and fully SOB more than once during this episode. Thank you so much for the emotional labour you put into this episode Mrs. P. As someone who absolutely would have been in Pennhurst if I'd been born in another time and place, this was a tough listen. But everyone should know this history, so we never, EVER, repeat it.

The Trans Agenda (Bucky)

Not to be parasocial or anything but just based on everything y'all are talking about this episode, I just know Mrs. P and I could scream and cry for HOURS about how radicalized we are about the way disabled, homeless, and addicts are treated 😭 the way people today talk about addicts especially is infuriating. How can you have no empathy?? I just don't understand

As a PA resident, I hate David McCormick so fucking much, and that we are a purple state. I'm from Lancaster, and I want to punch so many people in the face for their stupid right-wing bullshit.

My mom had an aunt who was institutionalized at the now demolished Allentown State Hospital in PA who stayed in one of the cottages. I haven’t been able to find any info/records but maybe that’s for the best; this episode was appropriately horrifying. Every resident deserved so much better 🖤

“The general public had thought horrors like these had been ended with the Nazi regime. Little did they know similar horrors had been happening behind closed doors in America the entire time.” That was literally a sentence in the Laws and Ethics of Human Subject Research online course I had to take at work two months ago! It was specifically referring to people learning about Willowbrook.
