I’m only in the part about Hillsong music, but just wanted to say that yes contemporary Christian churches go batshit for Hillsong music (I was in one in the early 2000s so I’m very familiar 😅). Honestly it was definitely crazy cause I knew families that just listened to their cds, or others like them, and never “secular music”. Very weird. ALSO mrs P I second Babymetal! 😂

Rhett and Link used to be missionaries for Cru, which definitely gives Hillsong-lite vibes. They very publicly left the church as agnostics a few years ago though and have even spoken at some non-religion events.

The thing about Hillsong selling its sheet music and stuff to other churches really isn't that odd of a practice. Most big churches like Hillsong, Bethel, and Elevation have been doing that for decades. Its not even where they get a big portion of their money for that stuff. They get that from all the licensing fees churches have to pay for streaming and posting on social media. The Christian Music industry really is just one big scam to take lots of money from churches under the guise of "spreading God's word through song."

It's taking a bit to get through, because my mum was not only a part of a Hillsong offshoot (/" friendly rival" or so it seemed like) for years, but also attended their college. It's extremely validating but also a little triggering I think in ways I haven't realised but I'm glad people are talking about it now considering it's been nearly twenty years and some of my federal politicians (former leaders of the country) are still really deep in Hillsong here too. Not sure I can finish this one but thank you for all your hard work and congrats on getting to put in notice! (as someone who has only ever had one kind of job their whole life in a different hemisphere I appreciate the explainers too puts a lot into perspective especially the exploitation of those "volunteers").
