On  an  ideal  world,  this  episode’s  description  would  be  something  like  this:  “Now  that  Brad  and  Eric  finished  reading  ALL  the  Warhammer  books  that  were  published  by  GW  (and  some  fanfictions),  they  can  sit  down  and  tell us  which  are  the  best  first  read  for  each  faction  in  40K.  We  all  know  that  all  of  them  are  very  good,  and  that every  faction,  including  the  non-imperium  ones,  have  more  published  than  anyone  could  read  in  a lifetime,  but  our  hosts  are  literate  and  capable  of   an  objectively  impartial  opinion,  so  let’s  tune  in  and  take  notes  of  a  few  recommendations  that  we  will  definitively  read  in  this  year.

I don't know if I'd consider it a good intro book, but I'd feel amiss if I didn't put it here. "Kingsblade" by Andy clark has imperial knights vs word bearers and friends. Was a good listen.

I'd add for a fun admech book with elements of knights is the Forge of Mars Series (Lord, Priests, God's of Mars) following Archmagos Lexell Kotov's expedition past the halo scar in search of a lost magos.

Shoutout to Requiem Infernal for Daemons and A Rose Watered with Blood for World Eaters. The former is technically a Sister’s book and the later is a 30k short story, but I thoroughly enjoyed both.

Jonathan Youse

Fully agree on the Fabius Bile series, thus far. I just finished the second and it's been a good ride. Really enjoyed the Necron books mentioned, Belisarius Cawl and Dark Imperium series. 10/10 no notes. - Skip the Night Lord series. It confuses repetition for depth and leans hard into “cruelty = complexity.” - Elemental council had a strong start but stretched too long. Conflicts felt repetitive.

Great list! I realise they are spoiled for choice but I will say that I think Spear of the Emperor by Aaron Dembski-Bowden is a genuine contender for Best Overall 40k Book and a great intro to seeing Space Marines in terms of seeing different ways they fight and relate to baseline humans.

Adrian Tchaikovsky also wrote a pretty cool Seraphon book: Starseer's Ruin

Stephen Delancey

I really liked "Lazarus: Enmity's Edge" it is a good intro to modern dark angels. It also has cool knight stuff and admech

Been a decade I've read them but if you want a light hearted guard novel I remember having fun with Commissar Caine.

Essays on Creativity

So am I the odd one out for thinking Pandorax is an awesome Grey Knight book? I mean that is the book that sold me on Grey Knights after listening to Luetin's overview of them.

Ina Koneko

The only thing I can think of for chaos knights is not even a good example, but a slaaneshi knight thats being piloted by a daemon is a looming threat for like the first half of Steel Tread. Its a guard book focusing on the crew of the title tank, and they get chased by the knight off and on for a decent chunk, but its never the focus. Its more like "Hey look, other survivors aaaaand their gone."

Kinda surprised Path of the Archon wasn't the pick for Drukhari. Gonna have to read Lelith if it's that good.
