Hi!

I’ve been getting back into folk and traditional music and I thought it could be a fun chance for play some music just for the Moans, since these are all public domain*.

I also chat about the songs and talk a bit about the movie Sinners, so CW for discussion around its themes, which include racism. I don’t really spoil any major plot points either, but I do discuss the main villain as he relates to the themes.

Not my best singing, I’ll be real, but hopefully that adds to the authenticity. Enjoy!

Set List

1. Wayfaring Stranger

2. Wild Mountain Thyme

3. Downhearted Blues

4. Hares on the Mountain

5. The Water is Wide

Wow, your voice is so perfect for this style of music. The first song felt like a straight shot to the heart, because for some reason (warning: light spoiler for the last of us part 2) it reminded me of “Through the Valley” sung by Ashley Johnson in The Episode of TLOU2. I think you and Ashley similarly have a beautifully haunting quality to your voices? Something I really love abt your singing is that your tone really reflects the thematic qualities of the song, which isn’t surprising bc that’s reflected in your audios too! But yeah… straight headshot on that first one, no recovery, no survivors lol. I would love you to do more mini-concerts like this, this was so fun!

wiggie

you have created the “wiggie at work” special, I always toss up listening to music or listening to aitw during my shifts, and now I can do both!

riri

I wanted to say that your mini-concert was a real pleasure to listen to. I enjoyed a lot the interludes between the songs and like someone mentioned in the comments, it felt like listening to a radio show. Btw I don’t want to sound like a spoiled kid, but I hope you’ll consider doing another one if possible (I'm absolutely not trying to manifest here *cough*). Thanks for sharing that moment 💆‍♀️ And psst, your voice fits so well with this kind of music, there's an expression in french that say, "donner du baume au coeur" it's when something brings comfort and feels soothing and I think it suits the vibe of this audio.

Omg new AITW Blogothèque performance dropped 🤩🎸!! I’m really touched you shared this and insight on the things that are moving you right now. Especially after learning a couple of these songs just yesterday!!! Perfectionism brain worms take another L on the Patreon 🚫! You sound lovely (always), and specifically I think it’s magical how you’re able to both convey the emotions of the music and a sort of optimism about the future? Something about your voice’s natural optimism and curiosity alongside some of the heaviness of the music makes it feel like it’s possible to ride the big wave of emotion and remain confident that it will eventually crest. It won’t just go on forever and ever. I think that's why I was so moved by The Water is Wide: your conveying that it'll be okay that these changes happen while fully appreciating how sad those transitions can be. I am not musician (was always more of a dancer, now extremely baby drummer if anything, and the wallop of March to now has put that on a pause till June 😔), so I can’t comment on any technical stuff, but your enthusiasm and eagerness to share these musical gems also shine through in the performances and that added to their wonderfulness 🥰 You said so many interesting things here!!! Sinners is so rich, it could have its own SFW. I’m trying not to go too analysis buckwild, but just a few additional thoughts/responses: 🎼 One reason I think the Irish music is catching on a bit more is it provides a way to access and ponder difficult ideas on race, class, structural violence, and imperialism with enough distance to not be totally devastated and rendered immobile by shame, if that makes sense? Learning about these ideas through Irish history allows enough psychic distance that, at least for the white American audience I’m thinking of, you can sit with horrors without the shame totally gobbling you up. In that way, I think it could function as an interesting bridge to education about interconnected and constitutive issues in former colonies OR, if co-opted, could become a safe container for thoughts on colonialism, but those insights don’t migrate elsewhere and Irish people/Ireland just become a way to participate in “eating the other” because they’re exotic enough to be tasty, but not so exotic it feels problematic. 🎼 On that point, I think for some, maybe it’s overcorrection too? If you can appreciate the broad themes of the movie, maybe you could fear becoming the evil appropriator. But engagement =/= appropriation obviously, and if the fear of doing harm is so big, one doesn't say anything at all, that fear is maybe too big and getting in the way of engaging meaningfully and respectfully, the more difficult and important task. 🎼 One way to gain entry into whiteness and the false protection it promises is through violence against an out group, namely Black people and their co-conspirators (bc of similar treatment and/or political alignment). So joining Remmick, one can gain “humanity” but has to give up one of the things that makes us all human (death) by doing something antisocial (violence of some sort). An evil rainbow coalition lol. Whereas for the folks in the juke joint, heterogeneity is what gives the group its vitality and timelessness (but an alive timelessness that is different from the vampiric relationship to timelessness). I just looooove vampirism as a metaphor, can’t get enough! Simply must recommend Ganja & Hess (1973) 🎥 Media Recs this Called to Mind: 💿 Hallelujah! I’m a Bum! - great satirical song about being houseless 💿 Full Time Woman by Irma Thomas - a little more soul than folk, but Downhearted Blues reminded me of this song 💿 They Have the Plant But We Have the Power from The Simpsons - loooooove a folksy labor song, and The Simpsons has one of my favorite 💿 The Commitments (1991) - it’s been a couple years since I’ve seen it, but I looooooooved this movie. Great music, I remember it making me feel good, but it warrants a revisit! 💿 https://youtu.be/WepyDNgtf6g?si=zo8doGzmhlxD5lro - Very different, but since it’s Saturday, Durand Bernarr did a DJ set two months ago that I finally listened to, and it’s PERFECT for preparing your brain for fun and joy 💃🏿 Thanks so much for this, August! Super fun new format, looking forward to any and all musical offerings you’d like to share! This was especially precious after a difficult collective spring (you could have sung Many Rivers to Cross, and I would have just nodded solemnly). Like the Christmas SFW, it was a real treat hearing your thoughts on music you really love! I really hope for you and for all of us having a rough, stressy spring that summer brings more stability 💗💗💗

Gabbagool

Sinners is my new personality, which was formally Challengers.

Nóri

okay, I'm only through wayfaring stranger, but it reminded me so much of "nothing you can take from me" from the ballad of songbirds and snakes that 2 mins in, I’m knee-deep in researching Appalachian folk music. So yeah… turns out The Hunger Games series might actually be a 🗡️🩸ballad. It's 3.30am here and I should sleep, but Wayfarer was lovely. Clap for you

lstninglzr

So, so beautiful. Tysm for the surprise mini concert, August, your voice is heavenly 🥹 hope you’re well❤️

Diane 🌙

The vein of folk song that falls into the “get lost or this will turn into a reverse murder ballad” category aka “hares on the mountain” has always been my favourite. Case and point “silver dagger” the Dolly Parton version the banjo is so good 🪕

JammyJam

Nothing beats a mini folk/traditional concert after a long, exhausting week. Your natural voice (when you're not playing any characters) is so soothing - it’s honestly the perfect match for folk and blues, at least in my humble opinion. I’ve been feeling all warm and fuzzy, smiling and giggling through the entire audio. I’m so used to the OG version of Wild Mountain Thyme, but somehow your rendition makes it both more beautiful and more melancholic. Anyway, I’m putting this on loop for the whole night. Thank you again for blessing us with this piece of art :DDD (And please don't be sorry and take care and do more music! The world needs it!!!)

Nec

I was JUST wishing you’d do more music! Lovely stuff, hope to see more

morgan.

I found this really soothing to listen to after a particularly difficult two weeks at work. I especially loved The Water Is Wide. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us!

Eri

bro i just start listening for like two minutes and immediately think you are very fit for the HungerGame scene…the runaway vibe…the melancholy beauty but smooth folk music/ballad..I’m stuck in this hypothesis rn in my head🔥🤧

sav kate

Were you a bard in your past life, per chance? Anotha! Mead’s on me, ladies 🍺

dangie 💌

(im)patiently waiting for the next time we get to hear you sing. this and your cover of be my baby/my love mine all mine are now tied for my favourite posts on patreon 😭😭

Aquatic_Chimera

Music! Huzzah! This is very much appreciated August! Thank you! 🤗

🌀

this was so lovely i could cry. thank u for sharing your heavenly voice w/ us 🥹

Rowan

My favorite thing about folk songs is that many of them are just past down oral traditions- and in your own way, by this podcast style audio reaching an audience- you're participating in keeping that oral tradition and living history alive. What a fun contemporary way to participate in folk culture through modern media, I imagine the ancestors are smiling down on this

Rowan

In another life we're all listening to this around a bonfire instead of headphones

moira

Just saw Sinners bc of this… holy shit, that was crazy! not a single thing that happened was what I was expecting after going in completely blind, that was an insane theater experience. If anyone is on the edge abt seeing it, go (lassie) go.

六 liù

just saw the movie last night, completely blind [haven't seen any footage or trailers, didn't know the cast or premise at all whatsoever] and everything was perfect which i also just wanted to say i really like how passionate you are about everything you talk about and your content has helped me figure a lot of things out about/for myself so ty for that. you're just so sweet and thoughtful and i love nothing more in a person

Miracle

I finalllyyyy watched sinners so I can listen to this and wasn’t ready to be serenaded lmaooo pop off king.

thiasera

waited until after i saw sinners to give this a listen, since i’ve been avoiding any and all media even slightly related to it until i saw it, and this was really lovely to listen to! the ability of music to transcend time and space is a common sentiment that was expressed so well in sinners and in this audio as well. thank you for sharing these songs and your thoughts/notes about them!

Anna Anderson Galvez

Omg!!! Hares on the mountain is one of my favorite songs of all time!! This was beautiful

Miracle

On the second listen and I’m on the verge of jumping up to praise Jesus 🙂‍↕️ new favorite song?

PT

After listening to other beautiful versions you recommended, I still find myself coming back to yours. There’s just something extra calming and comforting about your voice. 🥰🥰

Lauren 🍒

If you ever made your cover of Hares on the Mountain streamable/playlistable, I would absolutely add it to my playlists! I really love how wistful your voice is.

Amy 🌙

This was a wonderful listen 🥰 thank you for sharing these songs - I'd never heard of any of those! Your voice has such a cosy, warm tone to it ❤️ totally transported to a lazy hammock, dappled sunlight and a warm breeze.

六 liù

i keep coming back to this bc i love the covers, but 13:54 is literally addictive, richest delivery of any part of any word i've ever heard godspeed

🇪🇺🇺🇸🎙️Barb

These were so gorgeous. I came up folk singing, and you more than did these songs justice. Hares on the Mountain was particularly evocative (and why does my guitar never sound like this when I just mic my voice?!). Thank you so much for sharing. You have a(nother) rare talent xx

cheyenne ☕️

This was so lovely to come back to, I was really touched that you shared this with us. Thank you so much, August 🩷 I hope to hear more of your singing in the future because your voice has a such an earnestness that felt so comforting to hear today on a day that I really needed it.

Ruby🍉

Okay first of all your voice is absolutely BEAUTIFULLLL as usual. What a treat! Your voice suits folk music so much! Thank you for sharing 🫶🏼🫶🏼 I wanted to save this until I watched Sinners and I finally saw it! Now, nobody needs a European’s lukewarm take on U.S. politics and history so I’ll refrain lmao. I will say I found your points quite thought provoking. I definitely agree with what you said about assimilation and appropriation I thought ‘Sinners’ was wonderfully nuanced. It was really interesting and unique to have Remmick as the villain rather than an overtly racist white antagonist usually seen in period pieces. It definitely added to the insidiousness of it all and I found the metaphor to be clear. The standout performance for me was Miles Caton. He was so amazing in the film. The ‘I Lied to You’ montage part gave me chills it was so good. Honestly I think it’s the best film I’ve seen all year I want to see it again! Being half Irish growing up in England most of the folk music I listened to was admittedly Irish rebel songs 💀. But I do really love Pete Seeger!! Edward Norton did a great job portraying him in ‘A Complete Unknown’. (Please please please do more of these 🥺).

Ruby🍉

Ngl the evil lumineers definitely would’ve got me 💃💃 pick poor robin clean

sarah 💫🌼

For anyone feeling overwhelmed, numb, or exhausted about life/the frightening state of the world rn, I highly recommend visiting your nearest park, sitting in the grass, and listening to August sing “The Water is Wide” (27:29) while the trees shimmer in the wind 🌿 instant peace and tranquility boost, 10000/10 lovely experience, highly recommend!! ✨

B N

This was such a lovely treat that I was not expecting upon joining this tier. Your singing voice is beautiful and you bring such depth and warmth to these folk treasures. Thank you for the selection, the singing, the guitar playing, and the commentary. Listening to this took me back in time to my community indie radio days. Indie radio is starting to feel like a forgotten art these days, so the fact that you captured the spirit and magic of it in this recording is amazing. I would love to hear more audios like this in the future. Thank you again

Jor

Listening to this felt like being hugged, thanks 🫶🏼

好美的声音呜呜呜陪伴我火车回家🥹🥹旅行好伴侣👍永远支持哥

Thanks for universe

When I was on the train, I kept playing this audio on repeat. It made me feel a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar city through my headphones. Thank you august.

Elizabeth 🌺

oh man this was so cool! I don’t listen to a ton of folk music so these were all new to me, and having the history and context was a nice touch. you have a very nice voice (I mean, obviously) and this style of singing really suits you and yeah, it did feel very authentic and natural, if it was too forced and polished I feel like it kinda would miss the point. sinners was good but slightly overrated to me, especially in regards to the relationships between the characters and I expected more from MBJ’s dual performance (but then again my standard for actors playing twins is rachel weisz in dead ringers, which I think about at least once a day). also hell yes hearts beat loud, now that’s the perfect comfort movie.

C

omg i love this one as well, now Wild Mountain Thyme is my song for 2025❤️‍🔥

🐿️ mariska noodles

This was utterly magical, thank you. I've searched for this specific audio for a while and now I'm sitting here in quiet reverence. I didn't know a lot of these songs, thank you for the introduction. It was really such a treat. Encore, encore!

Alex

No matter when …this always brings me peace and happiness. Thank you August for something just …genuine and beautiful. 🩵 You’re the best 🩵🩵🩵🩵

dam

I love itttttttttt

Mattiiiep

just relisten to this over and over……

ruiiii_🫧

I really looove all of them. Wild Mountain Thyme and The Water is Wide even made me cry.... You are so good at singing and you definitely should be more confident and proud of yourself lol!!! While listening, I barely know the lyrics but your performance is so touching that I can feel the soft feelings in your vocie. Awww, anyway, thanks for making this, It makes me more productive and peaceful during work<3

Daphne 🦇

Listening to this after the murder in MN yesterday. I need to get back into listening to folk music. I’ve mainly listened to political folk music (related to unions, economy, etc) but need to branch out.

Juna

Listening to your voice is so soothing, but also poignant when you’re singing these songs… thank you for sharing this with us :)

Mika

This is so lovely to listen to 🥹☺️ the water is wide made me tear up

Rogue

It’s beautiful how a familiar song can become something else entirely in a different voice. In this heavy season of mine, yours has felt steady and strangely safe. Thank you for that.

B N

If you’re open to requests at all, I’d love to hear a cover of Union Maid.

PumpkinKooter 🎃

1st time I remember hearing Wayfairing Stranger was in 1917. Accurate, no, passable as an Irish folk song for sure. But it's gotta be one of the most powerful times I've heard it and damn did I cry as it was carried hauntingly through the forest not sure if the character was just hearing things or if it was really happening.

saaki

I came to listen to this because Hares on the Mountain suddenly popped in my head (like I need an excuse anyway) and I’m somehow never ready for how BEAUTIFUL The Water Is Wide cover is and how emotional it makes me 🥹
