Let's get down to WIZness,

chat about...subclaaaass.

SURPRISE DROP, CRACKLERS! Aabria and Brennan hop on the mic to talk about the making of the Wizard of the Citadel subclass, and just, you know, process their feelings about wizards in general. AbracaPODCAST!

Fraser Connell

Let’s. Freaking. (And I say this with all sincerity) GO

elijah

Literally at dream hack rn and got cut off at the meet and greet for Brennen😭😭😭

Morgana Evenstar

Ahoohoo! Thanks for a perfectly timed dose of joy 💙

AsterIsk-III

One of my players has been looking for the perfect wizard subclass and I think this is it!! This is great!

Justin

Awesome. Also lol at hope on the mic

Ashley Teatum

Literally I was just thinking, aw man I wish there was another WBN thingy to listen to AND BEHOLD 🤌✨

Ashley B.

The caption on this post makes me so happy 😂❤️

Thimo The Fool

You cannot imagine how much this hit just in the right moment, have a long walk home rn and was literally thinking that wbn would be nice for this!

majael

The wizard picture, by the way, is of the great Ingold Inglorion (both names borrowed from Lord of the Rings); it’s the cover picture of *The Time of the Dark*, book one of Barbara Hambly’s Darwath trilogy. Hambly’s one of my very favourite authors and the Darwath series is not a waste of anybody’s time.

Verdigree

It seems like an incredibly powerful subclass, what I'm wondering is what are Warlocks and Sorcerers cooking with to compete with this?

mguin

This wizard picture reminds me of the mountain wizard & his army of little owls from Worthikids

hewhocutsdown

As someone who convinced my brother to let me play a homebrew gorilla-elephant centaur species for D&D, I love when GMs and players collaborate for scratching that itch

Tommy Deibel

Oh hello. Where did this chat come from?

Amelia

🤣

The Pompous Peasant

Oh yus yus yus! I'll make teh old man out if u and see he touching funny style lolol;lol ut realy is teh best when u go and see an old man and this songs is kinda kike when u creep in teh nasty. Subclas is always a WELCOMED post in fireside since i can then use it and my class just gets so much class and hoping it will be popular with my group if they let me play but they HAVE stupid rules

Kyle Conrad

Listening over on Pocket Casts, and at the 12-ish and 22-ish minute mark there is a noticeable echo from Aabria. Just wanted to share!

Tera Almond

Shout-out to Aabria for being THE reason I want to play a Wizard. I did not like them in the past but Laerryn and Suvi changed this.

Xanian Jamfalcon

Looks at Spheres5e! Spheres of Power from Dropdead Studios! Ultimate controllllll!

Alexandra Ruggiero

Love fireside chats! Insight into the work that goes into the creation of this wonderful world and characters is like a soothing soup for the soul.

Michael Munene

Listening to this conversation, really helped put to context for me that wizards are much like James Bond + Q. With the right load out and preparation, they are beyond dangerous.

Alec Mason Van Dyke

Is the secret of the discover the one that Suvi uses but didn’t make it to the playtest?

Ciaran C

All I want to do is listen to these two mega nerds talk shop forEVER. Also Mazey Veselak special fireside guest for game design deep-dive WHEN??

Emma41420

what wouldn't I give to see the forbidden magics of Aabria's printed PDF annotated with wizardry marginalia 🤲💫💞😭

Sam Papke

Brennan: “Let stuff be good!” “Can we take Silvery Barbs?” Also Brennan: “No.”

Lexi C

As a fellow former jock I love it when aabria contextualizes through the lens of an athlete

C. A. Whyse

I have only just now included a Witch in my desert-themed campaign. She's an NPC, so I can't really playtest her the way I want to, but I'll still share her name here: Yenar, Witch of Weird Wonder (I had to)

Virtual Spaceman

Anyone else getting echo off this recording?

Melina

The way they discussed wizardry becoming second nature and then adjusting/changing it to fulfill your needs (like athletes and musicians) really reminded me of how I built English (not being my native language) from fundamentals and rules, memorizing vocabulary, etc in school and how it later became second nature, adjusting and changing it for tone and register, intentions and such. I have had to learn the rules to start, but now I know them well enough to twist and bend them to fulfill my needs -- wonderful discussions as always 🥰

The Witch of Wizards

I think Brennan would be more amenable to silvery Barbs if he wasn’t doing an improv show. It’s sort of the opposite of the vibe.

RNietzsche

Brennan making me yearn for my last manual transmission car

CommodoreBlue

Thanks for this bit of content. The next 30 minutes at work are now substantially spiced up

Sam Papke

It jumped out to me during the level up fireside because the prevailing discourse online seems to be that it's overpowered, but I'm pretty sure I've seen players use it in D20 seasons. I'd love to hear Brennan's thoughts at some point about what it is in WWW1's tone or format that makes it feel like not a good fit here.

Udoka

Obvs not Brennan, but I feel like WWW has a somewhat more grounded feel than most D20 seasons - we’re likely to be following these characters for years if we’re lucky, and certainly to continue seeing stories built in this world. Silvery Barbs is an impossibly powerful spell for a world that tries to have some level of verisimilitude and balance, and for a campaign that is prioritising cogent storytelling over bits.

Cait Batchelor

Round about 12 mins in there is an exho

macksimumchaos

Thank you for the wizard brain hours!

Erik Hanson

Ooh! A Flash Fireside! Does that mean Brennan experienced hot flashes?

Erik Hanson

Hearing Brennan and Aabria chat so joyfully about the mechanics and nature of playing wizards in D&D makes me curious about what their feelings are on the mechanics of wizardry in other game systems. They both have experience playing with the Kids on Broomsticks system on Dimension 20, but I wonder if they've ever studied the mechanics of the Ars Magica game. (A lot crunchier than D&D, but a fascinatingly deep and robust system focused on roleplaying wizards in the Middle Ages.)

Lojaan

Yeah they do seem to be making the most OP class more OP. I trust Brennan to be able to handle it but, well, lucky no one is playing a martial in this

Verdigree

I think if I remember behind the scenes stuff right, the reason the world is like this is precisely because no one is playing an martial class. The magical arms race between classes is fascinating to me because you might expect only Wizards to be capable of progressing via research, but though people often play Warlocks like everything comes from the patron, the class description is "Seekers of the knowledge of the multiverse", and since the Empire hasn't taken over the world, the other classes must have also become super powerful to keep up

MulvinPrime

Could we get the full list of Magical Secrets? I would love to playtest it even see the ones that were cut from this cream of the crop

Eribu

Is the multi-hour timestop & reactions for a single initiative count mentioned part of a published series somewhere?(Dimension20 / Critical Role?)

Lux ❤︎

Crunchy Wizard Secrets has got to be a breakfast cereal

KeevZilla

As someone who played a 1-20 D&D 3.5e I have a primal need to know the class breakdown of each character in Brennans home campaign.

Zagreus_the_knight

It's in the CR calamity one shot that Brennan dm'd. Near the end of it iirc

Luke Hampshire

Feeling very seen by aabria bc when I went to 20 Sided Tavern we had to throw a bunch of balls that y'all had to catch and i accidentally fully lobbed it over the cast and I believe I hit the dm screen. 😭😭😭. (I Was Not Very Helpful But I Had A Great Time!! 🥳)

Jason G. Rheins

Love the philosophy behind the class, and I hope the must pick secrets get toned down a bit to better realize the crunchiness. I'm looking at you Crystalline and Stone's Alacrity and Contingency (and Thaumatic Recoil with Magic Missile).

saltblend

Preemptive ❤️ for the 80s wizard holding a Bud Heavy

Eribu

ty!

The Wizard Stethoscope

I want to know all the ways you can break the game by multiclassing this subclass with something else

Joe Howard

I love the secrets, a hill that I will die on is that meta magic is perfect for sorcerers, and the people who want it for wizards are cowards. My mind is that wizards can alter their spells in ritual chambers and when they have the time to do it as they need to carefully break the rules that are set up. Sorcerers don’t have to have this set rules and thus don’t have to be bound to them. Anyway, the secrets feel coded so well to a wizard who has done the study and has prepared and set up exactly how they plan to break the “standard” rules of magic and that’s wonderful
