I'm kinda bummed i can't actually own a physical copy the cover is gorgeous!

Scordo

What does game designer mean in the context of an improvised podcast?

Wildmage Press

The cover is by Adrián Ibarra Lugo (illustrator for many Dimension 20 shows as well) and he may put up prints! We're also working on having physical copies of the magazine. :)

Holly Scott Laukkonen

Agreed! Reminds me of a very particular era of art by Michael Whelan that I was obsessed with!

Shannon

it's almost as good as 69

samothy

came here to see if anyone else noticed this 😭

Wildmage Press

Our game design coven designs custom mechanics for the podcast, like the Witch class, Wizard of the Citadel and Oath of Freedom subclasses, and more!

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Hmmm. Love the interview, but am I missing something here? "BLM: The webcomic I made with Molly Ostertag, Strong Criminal Protagonist...."

Brandon Carbaugh

This is a great interview. As a fellow writer, when I read/watch stuff Brennan's involved in, what I see over and over again (nowhere better than in WBN) is a storyteller who is eternally fascinated by the internal narrativizing that bad people do. The "justification machine" as he's called it. The stories that doers of monstrous acts must tell themselves, constantly and at ever-increasing volume, to drown out their own very real and very insistent consciences and mitigate the cognitive dissonance. Which they have to do by constructing elaborate moral scaffolding, with ramparts robust enough to endure daily assault by plain and simple human truths that keep rudely asserting themselves. Like "kidnapping kids is bad." And really, how can you NOT be obsessed with that idea, as a storyteller in the Year of Our Lord 2025? It's the whole ball game right now, when we live in a rapidly crumbling technocratic hellscape ruled by the self-justifying stories of libertarian dorks wielding sinister magitek that stokes cultural division for profit.

Mark van Dijken

for readers not in the know that should say "Strong Female Protagonist" and is an excellent webcomic you should seek out.

Katlynn

WBN always keeping us well fed by the fireside. Can’t wait to read this

Strong Female Protagonist is great! I would link you the website so you could have a read through of the chapters that were published, but it's unfortunately been broken for a few months now 😔 hoping Brennan and Molly get back to it eventually because I think it's brilliant.

Scordo

Oh, that makes sense, great job

Lucas Copeland-Nguyen

Oh dang, the lore reveal of Brennan writing "be good" on his bedroom wall!! Maybe more dedicated BLM(white guy)-heads already knew this but it rocked me :D

Lojaan

Surprising they refer to Brennan as BLM considering he has stated he does not like that acronym as he doesn't want to be confused with the important BLM movement. I think he usually goes by B or BLeeM

CaptLizianthus

Wild to find out the inspiration for “be kind” on Ame’s bedroom wall was pulled directly from Brennan’s own childhood. What a sweet move by Erika.

Emily C

I am saying this from kindness, and I think maybe, in a printed interview with a person he works with often, no one is going to confuse him with Black Lives Matter. Also, their full names are said at the beginning of the piece and then abbreviated, which I think is common in long form writing. Promise I have no satire or crankiness in my heart! I could be wrong!

Emily C

Does the Game Design Coven have a title??? The Coven of the Dice, The Coven of... Initiative?

Kyle

Genuinely wild that I can read an interview like this, full of literal, intentional philosophizing about the nature of evil and responsibility of refusing inaction in the face of ambiguity, and be like, "Pretty typical Brennan stuff, reminds me of the biweekly firesides without the horner corner." Feeling really spoiled as a TTRPG fan atm. Thank you for this.

Lucy Fox-Boots

What a great interview! I especially love the parts around the complexities of “goodness,” and then towards the end the discussion of paladins. For any other paladin fans out there, i highly recommend t kingfisher’s saint of steel series!

Lojaan

Sorry, "confused" is the wrong word. Doesn't want to take away from BLM. Or something? Can't think of the correct term. I don't think anyone is going to be reading this and think that Hannah is talking RPGs with a personification of the Black Lives Matter movement 😛

Pat & Heather

This was a fantastic interview, and really thought provoking!

kaguya_yoru

I saw that Strong Female Protagonist was fixed on the website but Erika's name is still misspelled, last time I checked.

Thomas Moberg

Utilitarian Smite! Those last few paragraphs should be mandatory reading.

Stefanucci Mozzarella

My brudder would always makes fun of me for playing the good-guy in videow games because it’s harder. This was a confirmation of perspective. 😂😂😂

Blades Dragonic

Omg little Brennan having Be good written on his wall like Ame I CANT 😭

Shelby Welby

“And then you punch them with a utilitarian smite”

AiraKT

I just finished watching Fantasy High for the first time yesterday. And that campaign combined with reading this interview really just makes me appreciate Brennan and his views and how he stands for them so incredibly much. It gives me courage to stand for my own believes and morals. So Brennan, I hope you're having a great day, had a meal you enjoyed, had a refreshing rest, solved more of your problems than got added onto your plate, and that you and your loved ones are healthy and content.

Ryan L.

That Art!

Sunny Gaughen

this interview is great, of course, no one is surprised, but what i WAS surprised by??? THATS how you spell Eioghorain??????

Devon

I was about to comment about this! I wonder if little Erika did something similar as they have similar literary interests and an affinity for similar protagonists

Wildmage Press

It's by Adrián Ibarra Lugo, who's also done a bunch of Dimension 20 art!

I basically wanted to bring the Fireside Chat vibes and insights to The Desk of Many Thoughts! Horner corner would have to go the other way around, but I'm down to talk horny fandom stuff with Aabria and Erika anytime. xD

The Wizard Squeamish

came here to comment this, i made my own be kind/do right/be cunning after ep44, and then i find out it's based on something the real people making the show actually did as children???
