Taka Kauri

Day is made. Thanks!

Chameleon

That should be a t-shirt lol

Alec

An hour and 11 minutes??? Y'all spoil us 😭

eve

ready to hear what magical mumbo jumbo steel did to grandfather paradox that sorcerer and his whole bloodline

TeacupTheBopcaJournalist

Let’s fucking do this! I haven’t listened yet, but I’m looking forward to it!

Chey

LETSGO !!!

Rafi

recording in the ryokan lobby is dedication

Sat down to eat and this dropped. I welcome the surveillance state

Steve Cartwright

Wait, I need to save this for my walk tomorrow! Later we goooo. But you guys feel free to go now

Zach P.

Not sure if I’m ready to relive this episode but here we go.

Micah

Power Word Scrunch mention. Truly my favorite post.

Teeven322

Idk if it’s on purpose or just how it shakes out, but longer Firesides after a delay are hella appreciated 🥺🩷

Daniel B

I completely forgot this was dropping today. Great surprise!

I was thinking of this specific painting during the battle scene. Nice to see I'm on the same wavelength!

Izer

The fact that: A. The literal Sky is at war B. THIS was the Sky that Suvi chose to claim, but what it holds and what she now knows is all just too much for her can handle at once

Izer

I LOVE SUVI'S ARC AND THIS CAMPAIGN

Eursulon's jump into the castle mirrors Eioghorain's jump onto the ship in a really nice way. Really appreciate the spiritfolk just jumping up on citadel stuff to wreck it.

Felix

"the placenta casts mage armor" nuuuh

Jahnoi Smith

Soooo, there is an aircraft named Douglas - AC47 officially. It’s nickname is either spooky or Puff the Magic Dragon. Its job was air artillery.

Izer

Steel turned an ancient royal bloodline into an example. If you couldn't handle magic cop mom at her worst, you don't deserve magic cop mom at her best (most horrifying/dope magic)

Jazz

Steele/Steal: Look at me, look at that witch, look back at me...you don't FUCK with witches. Now go kill that sentient At-At on steroids.

Alex

There are more wizards in the Epiphany then there are people living in the town I grew up in... 😮

RuviGaPo

TAYLOR DID THE EPIPHANY????? GODS I ALREADY OWE HIM FOR THE SCHORE AND EDITING BUT THAT WAS AMAZING

Jack Jones

I feel very happy to have clocked the "mapped like the stars" description steels magic be related to the music box Intel, very validating yes yes

Jack Jones

Thanks for the recap gang and gosh you don't know how real the craving is for the expanded descriptions of the gaoth troops/creatures as an artist haha 😆

AJollyGoose

I screamed so hard I thought I was gonna throw up like twice during the episode. Gorgeous. Perfection. Losing it.

The Spirit of Vicious Inspiration

lol Eursulon is the friend guiding another friend through their psychedelic spiraling: "it's going to be ok bud, this won't last forever, just park here and ride it out for a bit"

Gotholi

For REAL feed my fanart needs, I need reference material 🙏🙏🙏

Ale

My favorite trope of epics is when a man becomes so old and wise that the narrative decides he gets to stop aging and have thousands of descendants and in this story that was leveraged to dunk on an entire archetype.

TeacupTheBopcaJournalist

Oh shit! They answered my question! Also just to let you know Sinensis is pronounced Si-nen-sis, and is the scientific name of the tea plant. I thought it would be a cool wizard name.

Lazarus0024

I hope by the end of this arc/saga we get a character and spell list for Steel. Also what spell do you guys think she cast there at the end?

TheloniousPunkyBrewster

"You can't deal with 5000 damage, but what you can do, is get to that tunnel, because that's where you [can do your part]"

YourAnimeDad

Aabria said behold like Cyclops from MvC

YourAnimeDad

2 part mid season episode is crazy work btw

rio

Dear Brennan, can I have the wizard skyship The WowGadzooksEureka? Pretty please 🙏🏻🥺

Alyssa

There are always so many quotes from the fireside that make me wheeze! Aabria with “fucking maybe keep it on ice I SWEAR to god…you are changing the GDP of the world every time you skedaddle! Could you just SIT for a MINUTE” got me so good and so early 😂

Bennett Stewart

Everyone else also responses ahoohoo crackle crackle each time it’s said too right?

Josiah Latimer

It’s absolutely a sick wizard name

TeacupTheBopcaJournalist

Thanks man (gender neutral)!!! I grew up in a tea house so I feel like I “have to”/want to have all my screen names be some how related to tea stuff, I have fun with it!

Sil

Up top, the Sorcererous chanting at the end of this episode? 1KO'd me then, and probably will til I'm dead. I plan to use it at work one day as my backing track, Latin-choir moment when I find a policy or a procedure to tear to shreds.

Sil

Gadzooks is the name of my Goblin Artificer/ Wizard, and the gimmick is that they have (x) number of one-parent-shared siblings, and now, at least two of them will be Wow and Eureka 😂 so far, we've got Gollie, G-Whiz and Crikey! (Yes, the punctuation marks are on the homebrew world birth certs 😉)

Sil

Tears were in my eyes for at least 50% of it, and I worried no less than three people about it (even though I was WFH) 😅

Izer

Only now realizing why Aabria said Suvi's story was closer to Oppenheimer than Barbie.

rio

Lol just for the record, I feel like it's gotta be said that what beats Steel's Lineage Killing Spell is 'not having a political and military system based on blood quantum'

Sil

I read "magic cop mum" and just get the image of Zac Oyama as Gorgug making 🐽 noises at Frostyfaire 😅

Sil

"Ancient royal bloodline into an example" is also a raw fkn line, I hope you don't mind me pocketing and then redistributing it 🤩

rocket-flash

So glad that Brennan mentioned the star/box thing in concert with Steel's trippy matrix magic! During the episode I clocked his use of the word "constellation" when she was mapping her shot, and feel so validated that he basically confirmed they're related. 🫡

fern

The description of the epiphany had me & my partner screaming "THEY GON LEARN TODAY!!" jfc such a fantastic episode 🤯

Eee.eeeeeeeeee

I can't properly convey in words the level of thrill this episode brought to me. My eyes were watering like they do when I go on a rollercoaster

Sil

Gave BIIIIG Sultai (mtg colour wheel) energy, given what it was used for. So help me though if Brennan turns Steele into some Winter Soldier/ Black Widow-esque memory-modded and Geas'd "special project" mfkr, b/c my shit will be out of commission for days.

Sil

Patron needs to let me react with emojis so I can OOP harder with my 👀👀

Zander Jenkins

I can’t believe I waited the whole delay to get another hogwash fireside WITHOUT DIME PIMENTO

Sil

"Requiem for a Tower" by Clint Mansell and London Music Works being the first thing on my shuffle list after this is serendipitous af

Frankimer

Yo Taylor was I losing my mind when I thought the fun city combat music was starting up sneaking through the tunnel?

Catloaf

“Steel is in and of herself a weapon, a special project.” This brought up a couple questions for me: 1) is the “special project”-ness of Steel related to the white streak in her hair and the facial scarring; 2) is the white in her hair related to aerith; 3) is Suvi also a special project (my brain keeps coming back to Steele saying something like “maybe your parents passed down something to you”, and; 4) is the only reason the citadel and the imperium put so many resources into finding Suvi just Steel or is there another reason for it?

Adonis

1 hour??? Marines! We! Are! Eating!

Alyssa

Then I got GOT by “the placenta casts mage armor” And Aabria’s tone with “whose dream is this WHOSE fucking DREAM is THIS” I gotta keep my rescue inhaler nearby at the fireside

Bob Chapman

Ohhhhhhhh! I misheard it as "senescence," which struck me as pretty self-deprecating for a name cloak

TeacupTheBopcaJournalist

Wait, what is that word? I’m dyslexic so I don’t even know where to begin with understanding it just by reading the word.

Glitch

"power word: scrunch" mentioned god thats so funny

Dana

Senescence is normal and natural age related decline. Everyone experiences it as we get older.

Alyssa

“We don’t hit! We do NOT hit!” and “Catch a bubble 🫧 we keep our hands to ourselves 😇” What a GIFT these quotes are during teacher appreciation week!

Sil

Well...sh!t, here I was thinking Brennan said "terror," not "tower"... but really... there's no difference when said Tower is Empire-funded, is there?

Sarah Vee

Haven't listened yet but just wanted to say that Picasso's Guernica is a perfect commentary on that episode...

Stephen Bannasch

Assuming there won't be a Battle of 12 Brooks Part 3!

Caroline

Shout out to Aabria's quiet, horrified "birth?" around 19m. The lawd is gone and Brennen Lee Mulligan is here.

Caroline

There's something beautiful and terrifying about Suvi naming herself after the Sky of loss, war, and destruction, the sky that took her parents away. And here she is, trying to save more children from that same sky... all to stand and freeze because though she claimed it for herself, it wasn't enough to free herself from its power.

Mal

Day one of asking for Taylor and Jared to be on the Fireside to be held accountable just like everybody else.

david gatimu

Ladies and Gentlemen...It is time. I'm gonna inject this hour long episode directly into my veins during my commute. Ergo, I am content.

Michelle Morrison

It’s crazy how Lou didn’t name names about people who would fireball unnecessarily on a battlefield and yet, and yet, I heard loud and clear that he named Ally and Emily 😂

Manifesting Good Posture

I will not be downloading the social media apps so the comments here are the only place I engage fan theory. And what fan theory this is, these are great. MY what an interesting question (4) is. And it leads to a crueler follow-up question: 'did the Citadel allow Steel to adopt Suvi because she was the child of her friends, or because she was the child of Soft and Stone?'

Manifesting Good Posture

You are correct! We don't know that! I feel as if they've had chances to describe the next episode as 'the conclusion of the battle of 12Brooks' and they have not even hinted at that being the case! Everyone being very careful with their phrasing 🧐

Izer

In retrospect I would just re-word it as "dynasty", but you're totally free too

TisWhatSheSaid

“You can keep your head down and get to that tunnel.”

Cain Hopkins

The conversation that happens in episode 5 now after finding out what we know hurts so much more. Such a fantastic episode.

Jim

I came here b/c I haven't yet listennto the episode but saw 'Guernica' and thought WTF AM I IN FOR?!?!

Gabriel Graywood

Someone please take pity on an old fool, I'm so lost on what happened to Ghost.

Jonathon carr

What i love about this episode and explanation is capturing that horror of war and more exactly what battlefields are like. The SAS or spy are cool and talent but they didn't win ww2, that was the biggest armour battle in history with 1000+ tanks.

Ch1pp3dH34rt

After the crew sent Ghost to go get tested by the empire so she could be a wizard, they continued their mission. Ghost went to an empire chantry, and when they tested her and saw that she had a natural affinity for abjuration, specifically dispelling. The empire wizards kept her for their creepy experiments including using her blood to distill a dispelling agent, meaning she’s being damn near exsanguinated on a regular basis to make the stuff.

Zack

Steel is more Captain America, she was given the OG juice and is smart and fights for what she believes in. I don't think there is any memory stuff with her. She is just SUPER capable and then given a giant bloodline ending gun to use.

Matty Z Naps

This episode changed my freaking brain chemistry. This is like the third one in a row

TheodoreKnob

Aww dagnabbit, I had my fingers crossed that we would be hearing from Taylor like they did after the Abbasin episode. I love the cast and mean no disrespect but it is kind of goofy that the team that obviously did most of the work on the episode isn't involved in the conversation about how it was made. I work in post-produciton myself, and the work on this episode was extraordinary! Could we maybe get a talkback about the score and design like we did after the first arc?

Giovanni Gabriele

Has anyone else been walking around outside and just imagining that the clouds are imperial ships? Looking up and seeing something to that scale imaging it is a warship is terrifying

Mac

would “nutrient-rich meth” make the landscape of Twelve Brooks a super-super-duper-fund site according to the Umora EPA?

Bog Station: Remembrance

Probably because she is part spirit, and the Citadel/Empire think of Spirit as “resource” not “person”

Abhacado

I love how the narrative stays locked onto the perspective of our main three even when the stakes become so overwhelming! Whenever a story starts dipping into war/deity/universe territory I often find it difficult to relate to the scope of everything...but this story keeps me connected. Suvi recognizing a dead wizard on the field, Ursalon's willpower keeping him locked onto saving these kids, Ame jumping on the opportunity to enact a curse at the perfect time. All of these small but impactful moments make everything feel so alive ~

Lee Chirtel

I am very pleased to see a Dragon included, even if only for a brief "Checkhov's Golden Box" in the sky appearance. Hopefully we get to meet that Dragon, and more generally to learn how Dragons fit in with Spirits. I don't think the characters have time to think about this, but the scale really puts "tearing down the citadel" in perspective. Not just in how difficult that would be, even for other great powers, but in the consequences. Its War of Wrath destroying continents level.

Jovan Ko

I had this question that I wish I submitted when the ep came out, but thinking about the propaganda from the perspective of the trio is so interesting. Like, of course the Gauth forces and technology sound disgustingly evil & grotesque, but how do the Gauth citizens see it? Maybe to them, the Dreadnaughts are perceived like we would the Catbus from Totoro, soft and comfy inside, and the jagged, sharp boxes of metal from the Citadel that reject the stability of earth to fly through the sky, shooting otherwordly rays of death are the monstrosities. It's so hard to imagine how a normal Gauth citizens can find comfort seeing the Kashif forces based on the wording we hear, but how much of that wording is true?

Max Moran

usually the art for these firesides is some kinda meme or reference to a joke in the ep, but this time it's like: oh. yeah. Guernica. Yeah, checks out.

Rebekah

I really need Brennan to never say the word “fleshy” ever again. 😭

Rebekah

And also with ahoohoo 🙏🏼

Julie

Are we asking the big question around here? How is Lou’s hunt for Atlanta going?

leotoffee

I'm so glad Brennan and the crew discussed the dangers and considerations for the luck check used. It's commonly known how some dms like to implement punishing mechanics for players to increase the difficulty, and this luck checks would open the flood gates. The cast correctly explained that type of check is a battle between perceived immersion vs player agency. Brennan, knowing his players, knew a short utilization of this mechanic is doable and can help tell the story they're trying to tell. But it's definitely not meant to be implemented at every table or story.

Sam Berry-Sullivan

About three eps out from when you all parted ways with Ghost and Candle and no one was like “hey, what can we do to make sure our magically anomalous young friend and her hard to miss pet construct make it into our hands specifically, not an unnamed agent of the morally murky Citadel whose plan to farm a Great Spirit for his blood we just foiled” I started getting nervous. The longer they went unmentioned, the worse I knew it would be. Chekov’s Innocents.

Blades Dragonic

At this point the wizards of the citadel are looking to make the first 10th level spell

Strange Universe

Brennan's description of the Empire's method of warfare is probably the only time outside of an Eberron supplement that anyone has ever given so much thought and attention to how Magic as an industrialized technology utterly changes the way war is waged. No, you do not have thousalds of guys in plate armor riding across a field, you have thousands of guys in robes casting one cantrip and obliterating everything before them

Queerly Victorian

The art being Guernica for this one is AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

Emily C

Ah shit I didn't even make that connection - taking Naram's blood, taking Ghost's blood, fuck

Sundew

I love how much Aabria loves the Citadel's huge swings, especially the Kasov Collection's dragon . . . There's an "apprenticed to Pomeroy" AU just waiting to be written, I just know it

Queen Motoko

I think Eioghorain is an superbly amped up Circle of Dreams Druid

Queen Motoko

Some 10th level thing, I assume based on her namecloak. I think Silence did some 10th level name based stuff too

Ori Ganani

Thanks for asking! I got lost as well. Was this the first time Eursulon used this manufactured dissplling agent? Where/who did he get it from?

Yasmin

Brennan saying "you can't stop 5000 damage, but you can keep your head down and get to that tunnel. You can" low-key making me tear up

The Wizard Syndicate

I’m glad they clarified that Erselon wasn’t hit by the tentacle. The editing there confused me so much because Brennan describes the hit, there’s a musical sting I think and then Lou said “that would have killed anyone else” which sounded like a high amount of hit points had been lost but Brennan had never said a number.

The Wizard Syndicate

I hope Erselon will forgive Suvi for a mistake she made when she was 6 at some point. She doesn’t get mad at him as much as she really should because of a nice bath she tried to give a little kid. And she won’t forgive herself till he forgives her.

BingusBongos

You know, I kind of feel like this story says "War is cool guys and colourful lights" and not "War is suffering, death and terror"

Just some girl

So many have already said it but hearing “you can’t stop 5000 damage but you can keep your head down and get to that tunnel. You can.” Reminded me of why I play this game, why I listen to these people, and I really needed to hear it, thanks for helping and for making this show<3

Taylor

Had to pause and take a beat when Brennan said that he had no budget on what happened in the war because it's just words, baby. Something just clicked in my brain about the vast creative potential of writing and how free it is. Modern day Socrates fr dawg

The Wizard Slide

I wonder if what happened between the Patriarch and Steel is why wizards hide their truenames. Not truly because of what their opponents often do. But because of what they themselves can do, and what they know can be done. Like a cybersecurity expert who distains smart devices. They know how someone can use their name to wreak awful havoc upon them, and they are fearful of ending up impaled on the blade that they have studied so well. I really want to let you all know, "You can't do anything about 5000 damage, but you can get to that tunnel" has now become one of my foundational guiding quotes. It's such a useful framing device for something I've been struggling with for so long, and explained using my primary special interest no less! Thank you so much! Love the mention of "She should be playing Starcraft up there, but instead she's down here" such pain at being outside what she has learned. I feel like there is an obvious joke that this would be Warcraft instead because it's fantasy, but I actually think Starcraft fits so much better here. It is so much more mechanized, and there are very few hero units anywhere. With the fleshcrafter house being so front and center in this battle, I feel the gaothmai troops are a good echo of the Zerg faction. "Wizards are known by their secrets. I've learned too much truth" hits so hard oh my god what the fuck Aabria how could you. Seriously though, it's so incredible, and I can't quite put it into words.

Aviva

How?

BingusBongos

I was kidding, sry about that 😅

lichen

i have a silly question- how do you ask a question? is it just the comments from the episode post? how do?

John Stein

"The 5000 Damage Problem" is Brennen's new Dropout gameshow.

John Stein

OR the name of the documentary his kid makes about all this

The Wizard Sparrow

Trying not to look below….I’m on my final break of the day with 25 min left in episode 47 (third time through). Getting ready for ep.48. Who hoo

Tara

A "crocodile mile orafice that casts Shield on you as you come out" is a crazy sentence to listen to inside a cubicle.

Charisma Teeth

Putting in a note to say I began listening to Worlds Beyond Number a few weeks ago, and I just caught up. What an episode to sit with. THIS is why tell stories.

bitterbaldguy

After listening to this I feel like I didn't listen to the original episode. Now I gotta relisten, which isn't horrible because there is SO much in these episodes

Matrix Hibiscus

I had to pause this at 19:33 because I was eating sushi and it got too visceral. And I'm a preschool teacher I'm not easily squeamish.

DefyAllLogic

What was the spell Steel did?

Aberdeen B

As an elementary school teacher, I fucking loved the “WE DON’T HIT!!” And “catch a bubble, we keep our hands to ourselves”

Aberdeen B

Absolute chills thinking about the art for each chapter

Jules

I'm still thinking about the 5000 damage part of the fireside chat. It's just what I needed right now. Y'all are so considerate of your audience & passionate about people (as a whole! humanity! 💫) and I feel so much gratitude for what yous do & how you go about it.

A.W.

Me listening to this as I assemble the nursery for my first born child and having to sit down in despair over the destruction of fictional town. At least Outtake Theater is validating my choice to not listen to this episode while driving. Who needs to just kill puppies and loved NPCs when you can destroy all of them and everyone in their community all at once? Damn, y’all.

Obbiewan the Rastamouse

I have to say my favorite part of this was 103:45, Aabria says "my God, you deleted an entire bloodline" and the sullen way Brennan says "Yeah" just hits my heart. Reminds me of Enders Games when he realizes he was the bad guy and the totality of what he had done.

Reid Bathgate

DId this get pulled from the feed somehow? Pocketcasts can't seem to download it.

Michael

I'm having the same issue

Melinda & Jeremiah Westly

I had to fully stop, absorb, and re-listen to it a few times. This is an incredible gift of perspective and hope.

The Pompous Peasant

Can someone explain the Ghost seen and the liquid they are using on the mesh? What the mesh is? Ghost's smell was on the mesh & blood? Thanks!!!!

Scarlett Summers

So I'll try to keep it concise and just list out answers: Ghost: The child we meet many episodes ago in port Talon who has the ability to nullify some spells with her blood, Suvi tells her to join the Citadel, last we hear of her is that she'd been picked up by the glass coronet The Liquid: retrieved from Glass coronet members, has the ability to nullify some spells The mesh: Put over a sewer tunnel entrance by the Citadel which was magically able to stop shape shifters from being able to pass through/alert the wizards if someone did that The smell: Ursalon was able to identify the smell on the mesh after the liquid had been poured as that of Ghost, the Liquid was her blood and so implying the Glass coronet has been doing something messed up to Ghost.

The Pompous Peasant

Is the Glass Coronet the group from Chapter 1, the one with the mage that trapped the great sea spirit? That's so messed up if they are draining Ghost's blood to use. Thanks for the concise and informative answers!

jose romero

I can imagine, just observing the whole situation on a crystal or something, Archmage Saber whispering the names of the blade maneuvers Steel performs in her working of magic at the end

Jsuits

Where is this art they are talking about?

MaddieV2

The tone whiplash from the end of a really intense episode to the fireside is always so crazy. I was in total shock and awe, mouth agape, listening to a life changing story 30 seconds ago. And now I'm listening to Brennan saying he picks up shifts at a Japanese ryokan and Lou saying his name is Roz McClean. Wouldn't change a thing.

Josh

When are we going to get a subclass for those glowing sorcerers?

the wizard Shrike

A hoo hoo, crackle crackle goes the flesh melting earth-air mixing beam of superdeath! Thank y'all for leaving me speechless and screaming at the same time.

Chad Bonar

Where do I find the chapter art and stuff like that?

J. Gro

The dreadnaughts (sp?) starting as beasts of burden is not better than if they were human. Possibly worse, in fact.

Spectator Moon

How are you doing about the ending of book one?
