Hey, we're podcastin' here, only in New York baby, or Carrow, if ya nasty, and reader, you are. Ink demon cakes! Spirit Miranda rights! How to kill "da big dog"! And of course ELK!

Comments

Max Myers

Uh isn’t that a picture of a moose?

WWMSudoku

Ahoo hoo, congratulations on 50 episodes but also the bone cone counts just as deeply in my heart

Lee

We better be talking about elk and not moose I refuse to return to the lingusical confusion of burrows end 😅😂

C. A. Whyse

The half-centennial is here! What an ep! The hype is so real only 2 minutes in LMAO

DJ Harrity

Pretty sure it’s an extinct Irish elk

Just_another_queer

Oh look a moose Oh look another quite distinct looking moose

Sven the Scribe

'Me and my three spouses' - What a horrible way for Izzy to find out! /jk

Dolphin

If Eursalon has found his breath, does that mean he could return to the spirit, if he tried to?

Alyssa

On Earth, 100% not a moose. Moose are scary enough without antlers like those. In Umora, definitely an elk.

Claytron

Hey Brennan, No cake club here. I sit on the bottom tip of my spine too. We hear you

Shadarous

That's America's Ass Mr Mulligan!

Elizabeth Boskey

I oddly both agree that soda bread is objectively terrible and love it

Emily C

Caked up!!!! We do know sad boy poets sometimes be caked up. Missed Erika's dulcet tones for this, but hope he is doing well! Amazing to hear that Lou surprised Brennan with the cost question - I think some foreshadowing for this is honestly at the Grove of the Well. Eursulon turns down the sword precisely because the cost is too high, for himself and his mortal friends. I'm not sure how I thought Eursulon was going to solve the witch question, like some time travel nonsense or Ame being crazy quick in her mission, no idea, but then he asked Nif and I was like "oh yeah Nif! She is a witch!" Weaponizing anxiety for the greater good let's fucking go Nif, you got it.

Ellie Hail

I agree with the squad. Mad respect to Taylor for his scoring and sound design, honestly give that man a Michelin star with the standard to which he cooks.

Alyssa

Brennan’s recounting of his dad’s depiction of NYC with “the last thing I want you to do is think of this place as NOT being a story. All of this is part of a story and it all happened and everything you ever choose to do is in response to and part of all the things that have every happened” is both devastating and deeply inspiring. Especially inspiring personally as the last line I have time to listen to before heading off to literally teach the history of NYC to little ones through picture books 📚🗽

Gael

“Societies aren’t peaceful because of the threat of state violence, they’re peaceful because people choose to be peaceful” 🤌🔥💯 🫰

Erin

Congratulations on episode 50! It wrecked me. And Níf is my girl! Witch of the Weary and Lost? Witch of the Wary and Abandoned? I need level 20 Níf ASAP

Jonathan

The Man in Black's voice feels as iconic of his character as Terry Pratchett choosing to have Death talk in all caps.

Lojaan

Elk!

Clayton Craft

Did the arrow go through Sir Kerin due to his missing Paldron??? Misspellings abound and I'm sorry

DJ Harrity

Worse that’s an Irish elk which looks like a moose but is actually and extinct giant deer

Jami Martin

This is my favorite Nif appellation so far 😂

Kitkitdik

"Ladeling sauce onto the keyboard"

Kate K

My brain is full of holes and I (I am sorry about this) forgot that Suvi, the adorable doggo, was real and fully got confused about Aabria walking Suvi. 🫠🙃

Emily C

Also it's so funny to hear Aabria go through the listening experience we all have every two weeks

Erik Hanson

Nif, the Witch of Watchful Worrywarts.

Sean Britcher

Anyone have a transcription of Brennen's "we live in peace because our neighbors are peaceful, not because of violence of the State" statement?

Mopar K-Car Egg Crack Attack Strikes Back

OMG <3, A Keith David guest spot would literally kill me ded and make my month. I absolutely adore his voice work and he could play SUCH an amazing spirit. It would be legendary.

The Wizard Spwerm

ERIKA DMS A SEASON WOOHOO THE GAYS ALWAYS WIN (this statement could apply to literally any of the cast dming btw)

Chase Anderson

You gotta toast the Irish soda bread and slap some salted butter in, I LOVE that shit

Mack Whaley

Oh my god I hope so just bc that would be juicy

Mac

oh my god the DAW is full of SAUCE the plugins all got OREGANO in them

Jared Nedza

This episode literally brought tears to my eyes omw to work. The elk!!! Omg

Quinton lee

Is weaponized anxiety for the greater good spider senses? Is Nif spider-woman?

Emily C

Witch of Weaponizing Anxiety Witch of W'Spidey-sense

Ajax

As a member of the Irish diaspora who now lives in the pacific northwest, I would like to say this to Brennan... Salmon.

Ajax

And seconded on corned beef. Every year I do the corner beef recipe handed down from my family and it takes 12 hours.

Ajax

Also, speaking of things we like from Americans: potatoes. Thank you native peoples of turtle island. For colcannon, and boxty, and fennel crusted baked potatoes. Truly the undisputed best at growing and eating things.

Stiltpuppy

Witch of the wobbly knee

Ajax

Land back

Ciaran C

Thank you for answering my very important question about Cyril and Enzo's respective silhouettes! In gratitude, my grandmother's recipe for delicious irish soda bread (not as delicious as all dat cake, but close): 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup pure bran [this is where the flavour is!!!!] 1/3 cup sugar 1 1/8 tsp salt 1 1/8 tsp baking soda 2 cups buttermilk Mix dry ingredients and then stir in buttermilk (will be extremely sticky). Do not knead. Quickly transfer to a 9x5 inch buttered pan and bake at 350 for 1 hour or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool before slicing. Is especially excellent toasted with apple butter.

Chris

Elk is one my new favorite characters.

The Spirit of Vicious Inspiration

"coppers were always outnumbered, so being a copper only worked when people let it work. if they refocused and realized you were just another standard idiot with a pennyworth of metal for a badge, you could end up as a smear on the pavement." - night watch, terry pratchett

Amaya

Did anyone else get the vibe that the Citadel award in the pre-teen girls' room was the Empire equivalent of the Presidential Fitness Award? Like the way the rich people show that their kids are competent because those kids would never get sent to war?

Wrex Verdi

The capital Sarasnia as a thaumaturgic flex. "It does not work ecologically, but we do it anyway. Because we can expend power. Like. That. "

Josh Neff

From what I've read, corned beef and cabbage is something Irish immigrants adopted from their Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant neighbors. As someone of both Irish and Russian Jewish descent, I get to say thank you and you're welcome.

YourAnimeDad

*Maternal kissing noises* thanks sis I feel like I did a good job

Morgan d'Arcy

As a caked up Irishman, Brennan, I will not take this slander

Morgan d'Arcy

ALSO, Yeah, I haven't had Corned Beef and cabbage, boiled ham and cabbage is more traditional over here 😁

The Wizard Strange, MD

I hope they find a way for the title of the next episode to be cool and thematic but also just be "TBD"

The Pompous Peasant

May I ask a rules question? Sometimes Brennan will allow an attack to happen without anyone rolling initiative i.e. He will tell the pc to roll a con save because an arrow, being shot from an enemy unseen, is heading that pc's way. It makes total sense, however, DnD states that for any attack initiative must be rolled. Does Brennan just detest that rule so does not bother with it? As a new DM these mechanics are important to me. Thanks!

Brandon Carbaugh

If Carrow is Prague, I want a big weird zodiac clock at the Emperor's palace.

bitterbaldguy

The original Irish dish was bacon and cabbage not corned beef and cabbage. Whe we came to the US we substituted corned beef because it was cheaper and more readily available

Daniel Stevens

Anyone else get this dropped on their feed twice?

tripkt

Love you guys and thank you so much for your wonderful stories!

Carrie Mook Bridgman

How does the Man in Black *know* Ame is not there and the witch who is there is a shivering mess, just from walking by the cottage?

Xenkon

Brushing past what slate said "I know you've been in contact with your mother", after specifically not calling steel that, implying that steel tried to kill suvi's real mom!

Chris Kagamine

When Brennan was describing Nif's familiar, all I could think of was the Pokemon Xerneas (with a hint of Wyrdeer), which got me thinking of what Pokemon all the witches would have as a Familiar. Ame: Fennekin (or Ninetales) Indri: Beartic Nif: Xerneas Gramore: Dusk Lycanroc can't think of the other 2 Pokemon familiars I love that it works out that the Character we've been with since the start has a starter Pokemon, and the Character who believes herself to be the weakest (and the familiar is the side of yourself you need to work on) is a Legendary

Imogen Xavier

sir y'all working w the wrong soda bread recipe, this is slander

Carrie Mook Bridgman

"We're going to talk to you a whole lot more about Elk many months from now." Sounds like the Elk doesn't want a name either. I'm kinda sorry, but I do like the idea that our guys in particular have this understanding that a familiar is not a pet. It's an animal that has chosen to partner with you, in all its animal-ness. Very Witch of the World's Heart.

flyingwriter

I’m a bit sad for this book to be landing, but I know there is more to eat - specifically 4 more episodes, and hopefully many books to come! I am also so excited for the upcoming episodes with Erika! Everything that WBN team does is epic, and I know it’s going to be bomb!

Joshua Cooper

This comment exists to document my offense on behalf of colcannon

William Wright

He probably saw her since she was talking to all the grinoe children. She wouldn’t have rounded them all up inside

William Wright

Can you give a specific example from an episode cause I don’t think what you’re describing happened. He’ll usually as for a saving throw if there’s an effect that doesn’t do damage occurs. Like when (spoilers) grimore walks in a room people have to make a saving throw or be frightened. I don’t think he “detests” that rule, but for certain things in this story rolling initiative isn’t necessary because a fight isn’t breaking out or it’s a forgone conclusion. If fleeing from the witch of the wild hunt means she’s allowed to kill you, there’s no need for initiative because your hit points are already zero and she doesn’t do non lethal damage

Zagreus Rush

Didn't the man in black also talk to that one old villager in arc 2?

The Pompous Peasant

It's more on the other campaigns he runs. I'm listening to Divergence and he does this in episode 1. A crossbow is shot at a pc, no initiative rolled. I like that but was told to never do that and initiative always must be rolled.

Helaman Wayman

I don't know what your plans are for Neif, but when she confronted the man in black a title resounded in my mind: The Witch of Homecoming

Glen Petrofski

I got the witch of wits and willpower or some variation from that interaction.

Lynn Ford

Being stalked by magic Rust Cohle from TD is my new anxiety. Thanks Brennan!

Joseph O'Toole

all the conversation about nif and the elk gave me an idea... familiars suddenly gain the ability to speak. Deaf witch and animal with hands (racoon?) who suddenly gains the ability to sign? is this anything? 🥺

Alyssa

As someone that hasn’t seen Sinners yet, Aabria’s “again, this goes back to my original opinion that like this is why there’s so much crossover in the Irish and Black communities. We’re here to serve cake, we’re here to rebrand the bloodline and add cake where cake did not exist before […] I’m seeing a lot of soda bread, let’s get some red velvet in the 🪩club🪩 It’s chocolate flavored, but it is 💋red💋” is like basically the plot of Sinners, right?

mguin

The one that held watch at the castle ruins, yeah! I always got the impression that he did not go home from that visit. 😬

mguin

One-shot where everyone plays gargoyles & Keith David plays whoever/whatever he likes 💜

mguin

Fully pictured Taylor with a ladle-full of marinara on a soundboard

Kitkitdik

Chef hat and all

mguin

Exactly this, where Pratchett's Death is all echoing mausoleums & the flowing sands of time, WBM's MiB is road grit, the grind of shoe soles on pavement, the weariness of late-night travel. Fastball's The Way, by way of Tom Waits

mguin

I guess the Irish soda bread I had was fancy - it was a sweetened version with golden raisins in it that made amazing toast I love the complexity of all the scenes - I didn't catch on that Eursulon was being trapped into giving up the kids until the moment Nif spoke up. The one good thing about being semi-raised by a murderous perfectionist ice queen is learning subtext quick. Something that stuck out in the Coven episodes and now: the witches that hew to domains that don't include mortals directly as much are meant to mediate between mortals life & the spirits but seem to have already excised their own mortality, sometimes literally. How were they meant to understand anything on the human side when they themselves need the World's Heart to connect to it? That's a lot on one witch's shoulders - seeing Nif take on the burden alongside Ame is so heartening (mildly intended pun)

Josh David

I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thinks of Keith David's Goliath anytime any gargoyle comes up in any fiction.

Maria

Correction for Aabria - it's more like Washington, not DC (there's an important difference, a city of two worlds oooowowowooooo)

Ryan Higgins

Taylor is the best because he finishes drawing us in emotionally. Thank you Taylor.

Wild Thing

Mirara has probably told the Man in Black about Neif before when she was still Indri’s apprentice. I could see her describing her as a ‘shivering mess’.

Jordan T. Maxwell

The usual lore discussions and general chicanery aside, I want to thank Brennan for his rant against state-sponsored violence and "security". Put me in touch with my breath!

Mandokarla

I have to say, especially these last few episodes, Eursalon is getting me to believe in Paladins as a class fantasy when I never really connected with them before

DiamondPWrites

If I had to guess, the attacker is hiding and their stealth is higher than the PC’s passive perception and Brennan’s treating like a surprise round. Alternatively, he could be forgoing the rules for the benefit of story.

Rebecca Mackintosh

Brennan said in the episode it was because he walked by the cottage

Shey

Murder mystery?!?!

Zanna

Yeah that!

Zanna

The witch and her familiar can communicate telepathically, so the animal could speak for her, if they wanted to do it that way

Lance Hayes

I take umbrage with the soda bread hate. Y'all have found bad recipes, try to zhuzh it up. Make a dessert bread, add some craisins or chocolate chips. Always remember to use Kerry gold butter as well.

Bog Station: Remembrance

Spent two weeks in Beara last summer and ate this for breakfast every day 10/10 no notes ✨

Lance Hayes

Exactly! Soda bread is fantastic. It hurt my soul a little to hear the hate directed at it. 😞

Bog Station: Remembrance

Irish Elk is Megalocerous Giganteus… looks like we have another MEG on our hands.

jawnster

HOW DARE YOU SAY SOMETHING SO INSIGHTFUL

SmileyGuy

Hard to keep 80 kids off the nearby road to keep everyone protected by ancient Witch magic (which might not even be in effect unless it’s just part of the house’s sanctuary effects).

SmileyGuy

Gramore has a hawk, so Talonflame? Mirara: Murkrow Hakea: Serperior

Sean Boyce

Becuase it was a neaf perfect show. It is a KIDS SHOW which features, at its core, our main protagonist functionally requesting euthanasia by the close of Episode 3. The terms of the spell were that they would sleep until the castle rises above the clouds. A concept virtually impossible. As far as Goliath knows, when he says "there is something you can do for me, Magus. Cast your spell one more time," he's saying "put me to sleep forever." Functionally, kill me. And in the show, we get shot reverse shot on that line so we can see their reactions to his request and to confirm he understands the severity of his request with a grim determination. That's Epsiode 3 y'all! This show was peak beyond its time. I adored it as a kid and will got to the mat for it forever as an adult.

Sean Boyce

Witch of the Welcome Weft. The Weft is the part of the weave which supports the rest of it. The crosswise threads above and under which the other threads are woven, e.g. The warp.

Sean Boyce

They have not had good stuff. There's a spot just outside Galway where I had a soda bread, a pub whose name I will never remember but was once somewhere between there and Roscommon and a dream, all they had to eat was soda bread and some cheese and we were so hungry, my partner an ovo lacto vegetarian and me utterly unprepared to find suitable food. And this little pub and its soda bread, so delicious.

Sean Boyce

Specifically, a heavily salted beef common in kosher spots in the rundown neighborhoods shared by Irish and Jewish immigrants. Corned beef is a result of those blendings.

Sean Boyce

There's no real hard and fast rule for that, and even if there is, 5e and dnd in general emphasize rulings over rules. So if it makes sense to do an attack and resolve it outside of initiative, do it.

Ivey Wexler

I've never gone from agreeing with Brennan to disagreeing so hard and so fast as I did when he started saying Irish food is bad. I knew an Irish chef who, every year on St. Patrick's Day, would make soda bread and lamb stew so good it could bring you to tears.

Brandon Carbaugh

The Witch of Whoa There Pal, Let's Slow Down for a Hot Second Here, Shall We?

The Wizard Sparrow

Just love the music at the end. Makes me smile🤗🔥🦊❤️🫎

Esther Bee

Soda bread is so good man. Warm!!!! Fresh!!!!!! So good. Not so fresh?? maybe not so good

Esther Bee

Wait also can I throw Singapore into the ring as a Sarazmere type. What Aabria was talking about with Malibu and sprawl. Luxury for the sake of visible luxury. Green lushness, consumption, also national day is coming up here so my apartment gets buzzed by f16s and massive chinook helicopters on the daily as they practice for the big military parade.

Esther Bee

Oh the parade in Sarazmere really was giving that ~George Bush standing in front of the Mission Accomplished banner~

Chris B

Smoked corned beef covered in cumin, black pepper, and other spices is how the two groups made beef pastrami

Linda Urban

LOVE Irish Soda Bread! It's like an enormous scone if you do it right.

Cackle Cackle

I really, really love the idea of Nif’s familiar turning her bag-o-cats-ness and anxiety into a superpower and I would like instructions on how to find an elk — please. Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease

Carrie Mook Bridgman

At least one person has suggested Witch of the Way Home. That's my favorite so far.

Cackle Cackle

PS: as a very, very white woman, with Brennan’s ailment in the cake department, who married a Gambian man — I am happy to have contributed to the good of society and my family’s honor. 😂😂 These babies are doing so much better than anyone in my lineage. I feel seen, thank you Aabria!

Carrie Mook Bridgman

That would mean the familiar wouldn't need hands--but I love the idea of the familiar signing, so yeah, raccoon, monkey. And the witch's companions would know sign. Fascinating....*would* the familiar speak Imperial? Not if the witch had never heard it. Both would depend on the party to interpret.

Quander

I submit: Witch of the Wandering/Wayward Souls

Quander

E👏rik👏a👏 I👏shi👏i mur👏der👏 mys👏ter👏y👏🎉

Ewizabeth Herd

I’ve been watching the whole series again with my kids and rediscovering how great and ahead of its time it was in many ways. It had some really complex lore that it didn’t shy away from for a kids cartoon.

Borangehat

Having visited Ireland, Irish food is incredible. Brown bread? Amazing.

Sean Endress

If the next episode is literally titled "TBD" I will flip out

Hannah Radenkova Illustration

I bet people in Caro would use the gargoyles as meeting places. And they’d have really weird names. “I’ll see you next to Screaming Bartholomew at six.”

The Pompous Peasant

Jermey Crawford, big gun over at dnd (not anymore) says initiative MUST be rolled for.

Casey Furtado

Dear Taylor and Brennan - I beg of thee to record the famous, “Alright, alright, alright” but with the timbre and shuttering of the MiB. After the comparison of lines spoken by the MiB and True Detective S1 McConaughey, I simply wish it to exist in *this*, our real world. - Ahoo hoo and crackle crackle with love, Me 😌💌

Carrie Mook Bridgman

"Societies aren't peaceful because of the threat of state violence. They're peaceful because people choose to be peaceful-- and often do so against the provocation and agitation of these security forces. Life is good because your neighbors are good. Right? *If* life is good, it's because your neighbors are good. There's no amount of rigid authoritarian control that can take the place of the fact that people want to take care of each other, and often do so despite the antagonism of forces that claim to be making them safe."

Witch of the Whispered Word

When I heard the description of Sarazmir (sp?) I immediately thought of Dubai Brennan clocked it so well

Sean Britcher

"Have you had Sarazmir Chocolate?"

Chase Landrey

Can we get a Fireside T-shirt with a little "ahoo hoo crackle crackle" coming from the flames?

Chey

erika led mini series you say!!! im excited !!!!

SapphoDyl

As a PNW'er, I find this distinction extra confusing. West of a certain point in the US, we call it DC to distinguish it from Washington state 😆

Neil Alton

What you fail to see Brennan is the direct correlation between the creation of the greatest works of Irish literature through history and the consumption of soda bread! “Poetry is what we do to break bread with the dead" Seamus Heaney

Amanda - Witch of the Winding Thread

Okay I have been sleeping on the comments. Loving that 50% are episode related and 50% “but soda bread?!?!?” On another note, I am preemptively grieving the end of this book! Is there info somewhere on plans to revisit our lil Umora friends? Future arcs or stories? Or are we all waiting to see where our intrepid hosts take us? How many times CAN I relisten to WWW? (The limit does not exist)

Noah Sam

I'm in the same boat with the preemptive grieving ❣️. They've definitely talked about revisiting this story – this is only Book 1 after all. When that will be, we don't yet know but I think it can actually be nice to give the story (and the wonderful players and creators) some space to breathe with something less gargantuan in scale. This Umora story will always hold a special place in my heart and I'm also really looking forward to this next campaign hosted by Erika 💜.

The Spirit of Vicious Inspiration

I can see some guild mage who hosts city tours, using thaumaturgy to boost their voice & make little spectacles for the crowd, being like "the locals call this one Screaming Bartholomew but historical records indicate its name was actually Krzzt and was owned by a wizard named Bartholomew. we don't know why its face was twisted into this hideous yell when it was turned, but legends say it was calling out to its master for salvation, thus Screaming Bartholomew came to be."

pilby

I kinda do want to write birthday cards to the waves crashing on the great cliffs now.

Aviva

Plus, when you’re stuck eating soda bread it’s nice to have excellent distractions. 😉

Aviva

God damn. The hyper-touristy walking tours would be phenomenal. So much potential!

Aviva

I made a Witch for a new 5e game. I hadn’t figured out her name yet for our first session so the sheet just said TBD. One of our players is Russian. His English is phenomenal but he wasn’t familiar with the initialism. That’s how Tifali Bidi, svirfneblin witch of the Underdark, came to have her name.

Aviva

Agreed. The first time I had it was in an Irish National Park made as part of the historical reenactment program. It was so good. The next time I was offered some, I jumped for it and was deeply, deeply disappointed.

Glen Petrofski

I like wayward soul. Seems very on brand for her orphan origins and for lost spirits in the real.

Aviva

I’m not familiar with it but it sounds like I should be.

Aviva

I love the idea of a signing familiar! ♥️ I don’t recall but I think the phrasing is something like one language you know. I believe sign language is even in the 5.5e rules! Plenty of deaf people know languages they’ve never heard, and even speak it. Lip reading and literacy still count.

Aviva

Wait what.

Aviva

If you are asking the rule book writers for rules clarification, you’re going to hear an emphasis on the rule. If you’re asking why a DM and narrative author would override that rule, you’re going to get answers like others have said here. As BLeeM has said, you’re at the table to play a game and tell a story with the other players. The books will never thank you for following every rule every time.

Aviva

Pics or it didn’t happen.

Aviva

I will make your grandma’s soda bread in honor of you. Thank you for asking the important questions. 🫡

The Pompous Peasant

Yus, I agree. I never understood why the rules are like that. They say it's to stop the pcs from killing everything before they creatures have an opportunity to react, that can also cut both ways they say.

Aviva

“I hope everyone listening to this is safe at home. And we all gotta be there for each other because the people that tell you that they’re there for you are 🎼 OBVI 🎶OUSLY 🎶 LYING.🎵”

Aviva

Ha! I verbally was like, “Aabria, you gotta specify your dog.”

Aviva

Oh fucking hell. That didn’t occur to me. 😩

Aviva

♥️

Morgan d'Arcy

I don't give out this boiled ham and cabbage on any patreon comments section 😜😜

Hannah Radenkova Illustration

Yessss to tour guides. And there is at LEAST one An Affair to Remember scenario where a pair of lovers have had a Terrible Misunderstanding because they agreed to meet at a gargoyle, not realising there are in fact two that are remarkably similar in different parts of the city.

Aviva

I was also imagining a normal bull elk, just particularly regal, like Bambi’s dad vibes. 😂 I had to look it up. Irish Elk were slightly larger than living moose, maxing out around 1500 and 1400 pounds respectively. Irish Elk (which are actually deer) stood just a bit taller. But the antlers. HOLY HELL. Antlers more than twice the size of a moose’s! Nearly 10’ (3 meters) wide, with a few specimens up to 13’ (4 meters). I could lay my whole ass body on ONE ANTLER.

Hannah Radenkova Illustration

Dearest Reginald, By the time you read this I shall be on an airship to the farthest reaches of the empire. When you failed to appear last night at the laughing gargoyle I realised you had chosen to do as your family bids and marry to strengthen ties with the ventriloquist’s guild. I bear you no ill will, and wish only for your happiness, but I could not stay knowing I will never be the puppeteer who holds your heart. May your voice be ever heard in the mouths of others, Yours ever, Tomas

Clayton Craft

I didn't think of it till Brennan describes him again in this fireside. I was freaking and had to see if I was the only one

Aviva

I also thought Eursulon was fully on point about the cost! With spirits and in general, he’s seen plenty of costs. The well scene. His father’s warning about the cost of going to the mortal realm and how true it was. All the costs of war for the Greneaux, Abassin, Stonerill, and Twelve Brooks. Knowing Orima and the way that shrines can be more of a way to appease some spirits than to honor them. The way that Orima reflected that expectation of costs or debts owed at the shrine right after was so good too.

FiendishNoodles

As a fun fact, Matthew mcconaughey played The Man in Black opposite idris elba's Roland in the dark tower movie (it was ass)

Aviva

The Forest of Fire is the Near Spirit surrounding the Citadel. The Citadel is, spiritually speaking, surrounded by the eternally burning jungle of The Clearing, isn’t it? Maybe I forgot, but I don’t think that had fully clicked for me before. Oof.

Cody Zimmer

Okay, now it makes me sad that the crew doesn't know the secret to good Irish soda bread. A copious helping if butter! Also, it's just rleasy to make a pretty meh bread, but it is really good when done well.

Jack Jones

Irishman here and won't tolerate the sodabread slander it's good shtuff Fr though if you toast it and put on some butter gaad daym is that good stuff

Bluez_Cluex

Hey guys, very random, but Today I was thinking of a wizard name. Then I remembered that Abjurative Wizards at the Citadel Have G names from dead languages wich would translate to an S name. Sooooooo Guabancex is the Name of The Taino Goddess of storms. Wich just means, will be Taking The Wizard Guabancex Thanks you all.

Karen mc donnell

I was gonna suggest next time they come try the potato farls and the blahs

Jack Jones

Hell yeah a good waterford sausage blaa

ScoutHooligan

Going back and listening and i just wanted to say thank you. As a Transman in the US, the narrative with Nìf and Eursulon and the Greneaux, is especially potent right now. "That it wasn't about what we did, but about *who we were*." Brought me to tears as we are all rushing to be able to flee, and/or fighting in the streets for our right to exist. Thank you for giving us a story that inspires courage and strength in our lives while also giving us that sweet escapism in TTRPG and story. You are all incredible and we appreciate you all so much. So much love to you.

Maria

It's like a cultural thing within the city - people who are from here don't say Washington. And transplants like me who hate the people who do call it Washington stick with the locals. So I agree! I think it should just be DC haha.

DaddyDepresso

FIRESIDE EP 34 THIS WAS MENTIONED, HOW DID I MISS IT?! Brennan was even like idk Son of a Bear with a Golden Pauldron that only fits 2 PEOPLE!! And that dead were walking openly in Ruiv? Ruv? WHICH is under control of the man in black!

Aviva

When the heartbroken Reginald eventually does marry to appease his family, I have to imagine that dock worker lurking around the reception commenting on the ventriloquism like the Educated Yokel.

Aviva

Coming back to say that your suggestion is what has stuck as my head canon. Well played! Sorry you’re getting buzzed with nationalist weirdness.

RuviGaPo

Lmao we sure are the patrons but we Sure Are In Painnnnnnn (afectionate??????)

Sean Egan

I was waiting for someone to give the history. I grew up in Ireland and never heard of corned beef and cabbage until I moved to the US

Brandon Carbaugh

Which blows, because that casting is inspired.

Benjamin Jones

Took me a little over a month, but I finally caught up on the fireside! What an awesome show, and what great bone cone! You guys are the best. I can listen as long as you can produce.

Sylvan Blueberry

I'm wondering if anyone knows what episode of the fireside everyone discusses their familiarity in

Oli Naimi

Does the audio cut off at the end for anyone else?

Ariel

Niff, The Witch of Worry and Ware

Ted Orbach

Corned beef and cabbage is in fact Jewish, IIRC Irish immigrants in New York got it by accident and fell in love

Clint Shook

What's the near-Umbra?!!! Did Brennan let some lore slip?

Patrishish

Witch of Wayward Children? Witch of Wandering Children? Which of Wronged Children?

"Witch of the Wayward Child" was also my first thought

Ah, and see that's where the disconnect comes from and where I side more with Aabria than Brennan at this moment. These spirits feel like humans because that's a part of what spirits are. Spirits is the human process of taking concepts that aren't human and essentially humanizing them. And that is why they're viewed often as a person. Irl, water doesn't care that you put a portion of tribute at the bridge to appease it. Water does it's own thing with no consideration of what humans are doing. (Now of course humans can manipulate water using the knowledge of how water works, but that's a different story.) So when you're humanizing concepts, and your having them perform behaviors that humans do, you get the spiderman meme as mentioned. That's why writing and role playing as spirits is incredibly difficult, as you have to determine where the line falls between the humanize portion of the spirit and the concept portion of the spirit. That's why the end scene felt like two sides of the same coin. You essentially have two upper echeleon forces (Steel and the Man in Black) performing very similar actions for very different reasons.

I third this, as it was also my first thought

“Societies aren’t peaceful because of the threat of state violence, they are peaceful because people choose to be peaceful … and often do so against the provocation and agitation of these security forces. If life is good it’s because your neighbors are good. There’s no amount of rigid authoritarian control that can take the place of the fact that people want to take care of each other and do so despite the antagonism of forces that claim to be making them safe.”

Loved this: “Societies aren’t peaceful because of the threat of state violence, they are peaceful because people choose to be peaceful … and often do so against the provocation and agitation of these security forces. If life is good it’s because your neighbors are good. There’s no amount of rigid authoritarian control that can take the place of the fact that people want to take care of each other and do so despite the antagonism of forces that claim to be making them safe.”

Arwen ap Urdo

Maybe!! Although I thought it might be a mix between the Near-Spirit and the Umbral Arcana from unsleeping city 😂

Blaze

spot-on erika impression.

Jema Horjus

Love the talk about similarity between mortals and spirits at great scales of power. I've been thinking for a while that as wizards grow in power they begin to resemble great spirits, even to the point where namecloaks seem to function similarly to a spirit's domain.

Dr. Eggman

I thought the same thing, though its still interesting that theyre close enough in concept for him to mix them up

Bonnie Calderwood Aspinwall

I need to know if it was a deliberate choice (I'm assuming so) for both Steel and Eioghorain to describe themselves as monsters when talking to Suvi about the personal cost of war because I haven't heard it mentioned and I've been going feral thinking about itttttt

Nif the Witch of Wait, What do you mean?

Andrew Tucker

I listened to every episode up to episode 50 and then I went back and I binged the children’s adventure and all 50 fireside chats. (I can listen to podcasts while I’m at work) I’m just now finding out you’re planning on ending WWW!??!! NOOOOOOOOO. Anyway, love the pod, love you guys. I need more of this campaign. If you end it, please bring it back at some point.

Stephan Krosecz

The name that immediately popped into my head when Nief said her thing was "The Witch of Wayward Waifs" haha

The Pompous Peasant

Can someone tell me where and how Ame got Task from Suvi? I can't listen to the ep until I know. I MUST know! Please helps 😣

Ian Mcilwean

You guys talking about one being over so much is starting to make me nervous.

George Lister

Pitching a witch title for Nif. The Witch of the Worrisome Watch

Erin Simonitch

I’m obsessed with Nif and her future title! Witch of the Watchful Ward?

George Lister

Ooo I like this one. Has domain over youth and the protection of innocents

rosa bronks

I disagree about soda bread as an Irish person. I'm wondering if they made white soda bread which sucks.

Witch of the Warren of Words

Suvi sent Task to Ame and Eursulon when Sworn captured her in the Twelve Brooks garrison. It was Task that alerted them that Suvi was caught and that the Wizard Slate was coming

Witch of the Warren of Words

They'll probably bring it back at some point. They have talked about Book II a few times on the fireside chat. But after episode 54 (the end of Book I), the next campaign will be GM'd by Aabria and the backdrop of it will be space

Tyler

i saw Witch of the Way home somewhere and i quite liked that one

Titus Weikal

The book. They will return to this story and this place

The Wizard Salsa

This episode made me happy cry and then be so scared I got whiplash from how fast I stood up and dried my silly elk tears to scream NO BRENNAN STOP RIGHT NOW!! In all seriousness this is the greatest story ever told, congrats to everyone for 50 episodes 😍😍 I'm running to catch up before the finale of book 1, i never want it to end 😭

Hel

I just need to stress, it’s not that rabbits don’t love carrots. Rabbits love tasty sugary food, they also love fruit! They just should absolutely not be eating a whole carrot at once. And they will. They are gluttons. You have to prevent that from happening. They should be eating grass and leaf and everything else is an occasional snack.

Lindsay Williams

Wait I didn’t know I was supposed to be feeling dread and now I am feeling dread. What do you mean WWW isn’t forever? 😭

Eric Davies

Hearing that the elk is a moose is messing with my imagination! I do kind of wish he just called it a moose because elk is so strongly associated with the North American elk in my mind.

Tristan

I realize that Brennan was probably drawing a line between giving up the pauldron and his death in the next battle. And it is beatuiful. But from a practical, pedantic perspective I can't help but wonder if the arrow went through Curran's gorget, or if he wasn't wearing one.

BingusBongos

So an American moose is actually the same animal as the European Elk. They're just named differently ☝️

Cait Batchelor

As a 75% Irish/Scottish person who’s caked up to a remarkable degree I take serious offense

Jared Guzman

Aw man, I wish Erika could have been here to talk about Nif's moment

Natecharodon

Incorrect. No idea where you got that from. There are both elk and moose in north America and they're very different.

Dan Cruickshank

@Natecharodon The European name for the Alces Alces in English is Elk. The same animal, Alces Alces, is referred to as a Moose in North America.

J. Gro

In my experience, rabbits like carrots just fine. They aren't particularly choosy eaters.

Jake Levinson

I’ve been reading a few project books right now and listen to an audiobook at the same time, and there’s so much discord vibes from this campaign. Even like things about witches and what not.
