Our interlocutors do as the Romans do and pipe up, sweating through their first interrogation, but Cass finds himself in the cruelest court of all when his paper trail leads the way to new suspicions and old desperations. Not even a nice liberal government can save you from some things, like the smoking, still-warm barrel of a gun.

Tough days, but how bad a day can Clue day be? Thank you all for this

GrumblyArcher

Another episode of Hint, another day where I bang the drum about Artlist.io being an AI company. Additionally, it is based in Israel and on top of not wanting my money to taken and spent on the products of a company that actively builds products that seek to put the very people on this podcast out of a job, I also do not want to generate tax dollars for state actively committing a genocide.

B

the wbn notifications alone instantly improve my day 🍵

Shannon Brooks

MINTGOMERY I AM ROLLING ON THE FLOOR 😂😂😂💚💚💚

Anyo

20:21 🤣 "Why?! Well, that's culture, Claudette! That's Culture!" 😂😂

GrumblyArcher

They have been using the services of Artlist.io during their run of Hint episodes, as noted in their show notes and the end of the credits.

Fxd Gear Queer

I'm with you. Obviously this project is already completed, but I hope they reconsider using it on any future projects.

Lily Cole

RIP Martha, Mint, Kelley and Forrest Cause of death: Retcon

Aster

Mintgomery instead of Araminta was CRAZY work, Brennan

TheodoreKnob

Yeah, it's almost certainly too late to change it this far into the series anyway. And I agree with you about the Israeli thing, but unless someone is searching the nationality of the founders of every single company they use how is someone supposed to know that? I just went and checked out their page and they don't mention their Israeli origins anywhere. You'd have to go looking for it.

TheodoreKnob

About the AI issue, I don't think your ask is reasonable. We were having this discussion in the discord recently and someone put it far better than I can and it stuck with me, so I will quote them here: "If you want to ditch every company service or platform that’s pushing AI slop you’d have to stop using Google, Amazon (and therefore AWS, which hosts most of your internet), Adobe, Apple (including all MacOS and iOS products), and so, so much more, including Discord, which you are currently using this very moment. All the major production music licensing services, like Epidemic and Artlist are at least experimenting with AI content. It is perfectly reasonable to expect artists of conscience to not use generative AI, but it is extremely unreasonable to expect modern independent media creators to be able to function at scale without using ANY service or product that also uses or encourages generative AI." And I'll point out that Patreon, the service you are using this moment, runs on AWS, a platform that generates an amount of AI slop that dwarfs Artlist like the sun dwarfs a grain of sand. Given the monopolization of internet platforms into the hands of a few megacorps asking someone not to use any service that also is used for AI slop is as reasonable asking them to use only businesses without vowels in their name. It's not logistically possible. Generative AI is awful but you shouldn't put moral demands on others that you yourself are unwilling to meet.

Magerdamage

Brennan naming things. He can't keep getting away with this!

GrumblyArcher

I'm aware because I spent not inconsiderable time blocking Artlist.io ads from my feed on YouTube and when you do that, a little blurb comes up telling you about the company and where it is. Regardless, that information has been found and I am sharing it not out of judgement for these creators but for a hope that they will take the information on board and act on it.

GrumblyArcher

There is a difference between *needing* a service because it has a de facto monopoly over some corner of media distribution and *choosing* a service to do business with. Artlist.io is not necessary to this project and we should do what we can to turn our backs on these companies where we can.

TheodoreKnob

You don't need Patreon but you continue using it, even though it runs on a pro-AI service. And even if there was cause to switch, which production music library do you personally find morally pure?

GrumblyArcher

Patreon is a cornerstone of crowdfunding. Artlist.io is not a cornerstone of music library companies. I'm not asking for morally pure, I'm asking for a little better. It feels like you are willfully misinterpreting my words and intent here. All I've done is draw my personal line in the sand a little further out than you have and am making it known that I, as one of the backers of this project, would prefer a little more care from the creators I support when they choose what companies to give money to. This is not an attack.

TheodoreKnob

Which production music library would you suggest they use? Which would you find acceptable?

Tina Cassell

Brennan really missed out by not going with Araminta, a real name that can be shortened to to Minty.

Splashie Ashie

"That's culture! It's a smaller than normal horse!"

Lauren Hartz

Pausing midway through the ep to shout into the void, fucking MINTGOMERY Green. I'm dead😂

brokenallbroken

But Roman plumbing was made of lead, hence the name... Mrs. Peacock is a treasure, and I hope she's some sort of fucked up Timelord we get to see again in the future.

Frankimer

More like Gotchings Home for Cultured Boys, this Green fellow seems to be a bit of a rowdy

blue

i'm just here to Gasp!

Kalob abramson

Calling it here that I think The Professor was in on it 😭 “That’s an interesting theory.” Was just too sinister lmao

Cosmic

Okay, but is mintgomery named after Louis character in cloudward ho, or is Montgomery named after mint?

Jane C

Did I hear a snippet of Liszt’s Totentanz at the end of the episode? Nice callback to the candlestick and the Boddies’ love of the composer!

Nym

The acoustics of Erika or Abriya smacking Brennan for “mintgomery” was my favorite part of this episode 🤣

Kelley Mc

As a Kelley I take a bow. I’m dead.

Tawny Lacuna

Really fun ep gang! And i for one am glad to learn that Mr Green and Mrs Chartreuse have a healthy relationship. 😄

1man2hands

Kelly, Forest, and Mint Green were already very good and then... Mintgomery...

Andrew Wolf

Kelly, Forest, and Mint sent me. Do you think if Cassidy has another daughter, he and Martha will name her Heather?

1man2hands

And in Clue, the weapon itself was a lead pipe specifically, iirc

Heydon Hensley

Omg this episode is so impressive. The respectful managing of PTSD (then called shell-shock or battle fatigue), the reference to a liberal government in Germany when we now all know this would have been only a couple years after the bierhallputsch. I know the team is improvising, so it wouldn't really be possible for Erika Ishii to reference Ludendorf or Helferrich in the contracts, but that didn't detract from the scene at all, which is amazing. Dynamite job!

Heydon Hensley

He's got the constitution of a revington man!

Devon

Erika’s portrayal of Mrs Peacock and Ms Scarlett are so fun and endearing. Love hearing them play kooky old ladies lmao

That Guy

Hmmm my gut is telling me it's either Mrs. White, or that Mr. Body is playing a terrible game with his guest and the body they found is a fake of some sort that he bought with his exorbitant amount of money.

Robert Thomson

Brennan taking out the rest of the cast (and the audiencel with the Greene family is worth the price of admission. Mintgomery indeed.

Sky Rowan

Wow Brennan, 🫦💅🏻 way to impress a horse-guy with those Shetland Pony facts 😮‍💨😜…

GrumblyArcher

It is interesting that you are fixated on me specifically answering that question. I am clearly not in the industry. Presumably, you want me to give you a company name so that you can investigate it and try to hold it to a straw man version of what I am asking for. Even so, it is very easy to search out non-AI booster music libraries. I have tried to be polite but am not interested in playing out the old 'We should improve society somewhat' meme with you anymore. I have other things going on in real life that demand my care and concern.

Katlynn

I’m suspicious of every single person, this is amazing!

bexcx

omg hint is so freaking great!!! thank you sooooo much!!! i am having the time of my life listening to this!!!

Rachel

I have so many thoughts but the prevailing is Rud did it. He planned it.

Indulgent Words

I had 100% presumed that Marlene was Dietrich! I didn't realize this was NPC!

TheodoreKnob

If you can't name an alternative that you would accept, then you shouldn't make the complaint in the first place.

LunatiqueCraft

Several people reference this podcast and ‘Task, the spider’ in response to my Crystal Spiders so I had to check it out. I am now fully here for it! I have so much catching up to do (luckily I sit around and craft a lot). I used to play D&D with my dad as a young teen and haven’t been able to in 20 years. This show is amazing and helps fill a little void I didn’t fully realize I had. I’m excited to be here ✨🕷️

GrumblyArcher

Hah, you nearly got me bub. I had a whole thing typed out, but I was very clear in my last response. I'm not playing this game with you and validating your complacency. I'm really impressed you seem to be enough of a fan to pay this patreon money without accepting any of the politics of the people behind it.

AliceH

I don't expect Brennan to know this, but I desperately wanted Cassidy to say he couldn't have done it because it would bar him from inheriting (the "slayer rule" - Riggs v. Palmer 115 N.Y. 506 (1889)) (ie, you can't benefit from the estate if you're directly involved in the murder)

AliceH

It was a very "one or two feldspars" moment where I was going, '*is* this common knowledge or did law school break my brain', lol

Zoop

Yeah that’s a pretty good point. I imagine WBN was not explicitly using the AI functions of Artlist.io (in so far as they have control over that). I know that when I’m using say adobe, I turn off all the dumb Ai shit (I’m writing a fuckin thesis adobe please stop). I do wanna say though that the presence of AI in Adobe & docs & word has led me to buy and use Scrivener for both school stuff and personal creative stuff cuz I don’t fully trust that they won’t start training their AI on users writing and don’t like the idea of it taking my thoughts from me. That particular risk is something I feel creatives and academics have good reason to try and avoid. However, while I really know so v little about Artlist.io, it *seems* to solely be a archive front which music can be sourced (and presumably added to the collection) Ie not a mechanism through which music is created/produced (I could be wrong-i really only glanced at it), thus it ostensibly wouldnt pose the equivalent risk of the one i mentioned w/ using adobe/docs/word above, to those using it. If it did though that would (imo) be a particularly prescient concern & reason for creators like those at WBN to attempt to find a different tool to use. You clearly know what more about the music industry, websites like Artist.io, and seemingly j AI in general than I do so what do you think?

Megan

What's funny, is I actually used to know a family of Greens and I kid you not, the kids were Forrest, Kelly, and Olive. Dog was named Blue. They knew how to stick to a bit

Piper

Mint being short for MINTGOMERY took me all the way the fuck out

Loni Vogler

Flowers and moss growing around his ankles is the most entrancing imagery ever invoked! 🥰
