Happy New Year! The "hole" gang is BACK to talk all things justification of self implication in unpleasant systems of power and violence. AND when it is okay to stop saying: Happy New Year! (Spoiler alert: Never stop saying it!)

Ahoo hoo

WizardScorch

ahoo hoo & crackle crackle!! so excited for this fireside chat! i missed the gang

Katlynn

It’s wonderful to have the gang reunited. Hearing how Brennan and Aabria collaborate over Suvi’s mental gymnastics was very interesting. I also loved the insights about the shield scene and how improvised that magical moment was. Gaaa I love these storytellers and their characters so much! You all rock. Crackle crackle!

lil guy

Reading the description, then listening to the episode, waiting to find out why the description says "hole" gang, assuming, nay, hoping for it to be a reference to some kind of inside joke, only to find that no such joke exists. There's no explanation. No reason. Whoever writes these, you didn't have to write "hole" gang. But you did. Who knows what unknowable forces and motives drove you to make this choice. We are left to wonder. It boggles the mind. Things will never be the same

Meonlights

I'm so happy we got 4 people again! The entire talk about what secrets Witches and Wizards keep was so golden. Plus the ending was genuinely fun. We need Taylor back at some point I wanna hear about his choice to use organs in this ep! :)

Abigail M

Ahoo hoo to everyone

Shannon Leimbach

I’m going to say “this dissonance sure is cognitive” every chance I get forever now, thank you.

Kalunyx

I have never collapsed laughing to a rendition of Auld Lang Syne but today is apparently a day for firsts. I thank you creators, for this joy you've wrought

Luke

My brain feels liked mashed potatoes after listening to “auld lang syne” in the round, and ending with Brennan making *crazy frog* motorcycle sounds 😵‍💫

collection of single fathers

Sometimes i listen to these and it’s a easy ride, and sometimes my brain craps out and doesn’t remember a thing that everyone is freaking out about so I need to go back and be like “I don’t remember this ‘another time’ moment, I need to know what they’re talking about”

Tommy Deibel

Damn! That insight of a DM playing the role of the PC's subconscious/ knowledge and the PC Worldbuilding via asking for further explanation is so on point and exactly why I love this game so damn much!

Cait Batchelor

Real thing my 6 year old said to me this week: "I can't wait to be a parent and never have to do chores. Your life is so much easier then mine" and I just LAUGHED and LAUGHED and then cried a little later

Cait Batchelor

FTR her chores are: clean her room, brush her teeth and hair, and vacuum the house - so obviously her parents are in fact terrible tyrants

Melissa Shilale

Happy new year everyone!!! KEELED over at the singing at the end and for Brennan to have the AUDACITY to ‘brring babingbrrrrbing’ CANNOT.

mguin

"That smelling-salts wakeup call feeling of people about to put hands on you" just shimmers as a description, in the worst (best) way.

Iz

I was on the tube while listening to the second half of this, and I could NOT keep my cool. Those last few minutes had me cackling!

Tommy Deibel

Also...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!🎆🎇🎉

StWindsor

There’s something very healing listening to your interpretations and thoughts behind the story you’re building. I’m just as excited to listen to the fireside sessions as I am for the episodes ♥️

Wren

Same. Weeping with laughter.

The Quiet Footpath

The Don/consigliere analogy and discussion around it was pure gold. Spoke to me.

Bob Grannan

Brennan, by your analogy, I think the most gorgeous sand castle ever kicked over was 20 hours worth of Murder Mystery that one of the leading detectives to pointlessly took a shit all over it. You've talked about perfect jokes before -- I think that's the most perfect archetype of the chase sequence crashing through a pane of glass/beautiful painting. Maybe BECAUSE rather than it being from the perspective of the chase sequence, we watched the painter make the whole masterpiece.

Josh Neff

Before he was Buster Poindexter, David Johansen was the singer in the glam rock/proto-punk band New York Dolls.

Justin Melillo

The spartan response to Phillip II’s commands would be more badass if he didn’t then go on to do basically everything he threatened while the Spartans cowered in their poleis and lost the last bit of regional influence they had 😔

The King of House Cabraescuro

That shield moment was definitely magical. My favorite part of TTRPG games is when the DM honors the real game actions along with the dice rolls. It makes the game feel real when "I go outside to train" responds with *character gets pointedly better at action upon leveling up*.

Rowan Dalzell

"Telling their life story and answering NONE questions" is 1000% my MO, I am dyyying! 🤣

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Favorite quote--Brennan discussing Ame: "Ame meets people as equal status.... So she doesn't read as an anarchist--but I think there's a part of Ame that's like, 'If you stand over me, I will bring you low onto this kitchen stool next to me for us to have a cup of tea.... You and I are *bonded,* motherfucker, and you are not above me.'" Erika: "'Sit the fuck down. Do you want cream or sugar?'"

Sam Thomas

Went back and listened to Suvi's prelude, and I realized that was why she's so combative with Ame and mistaking her motives. She's always looking for threats to neutralize

annemjw

Wizards are known by their secrets; witches are known by other people’s secrets

Julie

Ahoo hoo crackle crackle and a happy new year to us all

RuviGaPo

Legitimately too autistic to question schrödinger's bit baby

Alex Willging

Brennan's description of Ame's brand of anarchism is my new ideal for politics

Kiera Faye

Yep, this is the energy I aspire to.

Boston

More singing please

Nick Fraker

One of the classic instances of a villain kinda knowing they're the villain is Chiwetel Ejiofor in Serenity, when challenged about the awful things he's claiming to do for the betterment of mankind, saying "I'm not going to live [in that better world] either, there's no place for me there. I'm a monster. What I do is evil. I have no illusions about it, but it must be done."

Owl Eyes

I was so happy I caught up to the newest episode, but then I realized I’m caught up to the newest episode and now I wait in a purgatory of my own making (absolutely obsessed with the show)

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Edo says Eursulon meant to say "Another time" with more Clint Eastwood energy, but I'm glad it came out "normal." The Wizard Slate would have clocked a threatening tone and put a target on Eursulon's back, or at least kept him under surveillance. Saying it normally, a joke (?) in response to her joke (?), might not even raise a blip on her radar.

Carrie Mook Bridgman

I love the way Aabria in the Fireside Chats repeatedly speaks to "Ame" directly and then corrects to "Erika."

Zoe

Listening to classical music while studying and accidently came across the end of episode closing theme song - Seranade for Stings in E Major. Waltz Op. 22

Avri

Happy New Year!

Morgan Belcher

new version of auld lang syne just dropped!!

FusRohNahSon

is....edo beige not black? Like Aabria says she misses lou cause its black history month but that implies edo isnt black and we all know lou only plays black characters (neverafterL

Purplefishies007

Hope Brennan will give a tutorial on how to put flying buttresses on a sandcastle haha

Joe McMahon

I don’t trust steel as far as I can throw her girl … nervous every thyme

Daughter of the Sun

1. Someone wished me a happy new year today and it caught me so off guard, but I didn't hate it. 2. I took Ame not telling Steel about Sly as her protecting him because Gramma Wren specifically mentioned he was a very underestimated wizard and I think she wanted to keep it like that.

Matthew

I am 100% here for Brennan calling BS on the LORDS OF REASON. I am absolutely a "science and facts matter" guy and one of those facts is that 100% of the logic and reason that rules your life is output from a computer made of meat that sits inside your skull. Each and every one of us is one bad meal away from believing that an ineffable higher power is either speaking to us or plotting our doom.

jus10

Happy new year! lol

Andrew

In the Friends at the Table podcast, they say that they, "play to find out," at the top of every episode, and I think yall really embodied that with Ursalon's shield scene.

Berto s Andon

"will volunteer her life story and answer none questions" is such a vibe

Luke Hampshire

"Oops this dissonance sure is cognitive" Ah Yes, Another Phrase To Immediately Add To My Vocabulary

trellbot

4:37 “the juice that fuels me” Happy (lunar) new year black history month a-hoo-hoo crackle crackle

trellbot

46:00 …I’m not crying.. you’re crying 😭

Kimberly W

I'm not an artist but I had a flash of divine inspiration during the comments about past/present/future and I want this to exist, so someone please take this idea! The PCs standing back to back in tableau: Ame on the left, shown in profile, looking to the left/into the past with the fox in her arms, Suvi mirroring her on the right, looking into the future with her citadel staff, and Eursulon in the middle, facing forward toward the viewer, unglamoured, eyes lowered to look at wavebreaker (or his new shield??) resting with the tip in the soil between his feet/in the present. God I love this podcast so much

iliketodrawdinosaurs

I just have to leave a comment because there are currently 68 comments

hector angulo

As a DM, hearing these chats just gets the juices flowing. I love the vibes between seasoned players and DMs.

CJ Bonifati

Rare form from all 4 of you. Auld Lang Syne was a real treat. Thanks Ito (Ido? Eedo? Eatto?)

Angela Watson

ok I am late I know but I laughed so much I cried...Thank you Lou..oops whatchamadoodle guy!!

Cody Zimmer

You know what makes me sad about you kicking down this sandcastle? That some people wouldn't get that you had made the Citadel a bad place now and wouldn't think you were kicking it down.

A Broad's Sword

Came here to say this. I've had this exact feeling since the prequel campaign.

Just_another_queer

Yeah lou that "another time" bi let out an audible gasp. It never feels as amazing as the table experience but shit for us listening the first time it was INSANE!!!!

Genna

Not me just tearing up at my desk listening to y'all chat about the beautiful, flawed, human, vast experiences and choices that the four of you create and storytell together. It fills my heart so much in ways I struggle to explain. So just thanks 🙏🏼💕

Genna

Fav part of this fireside ✨ an aggressive WE ARE IN COMMUNITY MOTHERFUCKER 💕

Ashley Teatum

I'm sitting at an airport stifling a cackle at the outro of this damn episode y'all 💀 love this crew so much

Tori

Everything about this is perfect

Dan Walker

I’m catching up on old fireside’s now that I’m a patron, in an open office, trying DESPERATELY to not cry laugh at Lou’s incredible elevation of Brennan’s already-genius Auld Lang Syne bit.

Mangocheese

At 00:16:00 Brennan starts laying out the plot of mentopolis

Mangocheese

"would you like cream or sugar" (threatening)

TooBlue12

Who else now that book one is over is listening to these firesides and with SO MUCH more context for the characters choices and how good they were. Brennan must have been so pleased and proud.

J. Gro

Except for she immediately cast detect magic after to clock him! I'm a first time listener, so I'll see how that plays out... 😬

J. Gro

17:34 - "that real, like, settin' up of the jello of adulthood" is somehow one of the most brilliant analogies I've heard in a long time. Dang.

J. Gro

After having a student tell me once that he was messing around because he wanted to, I had an aha moment. I then proceeded to explain to him that life is not about doing what you want when you want, and if he thought that becoming an adult would unlock that for him, he was sadly mistaken. If anything, not only are your responsibilities greater, but so are the consequences - you'll be losing more than time away from recess, my friend!

J. Gro

I've gotta say, for the affect that Lou was putting on in the outtro bit, he actually had a really nice quality to his voice!

Tim Mullally

I just see little kid Eursylon laying on his stomach, kicking his little bear paws behind him while his tongue sticks out of his mouth and he concentrates on painting a tree on a shield with a mushroom at the base and I think probably the mushroom has a little bite out of it... and this just makes me happy.

Tim Mullally

Ignoring what I already know, I am going back and I am listening to these old ass podcast because I just love Worlds Beyond Number and Dimension 20 and all this shit so much that I need to hear all this... Here's the only thing I wanted to say, is if wizards are known by their secrets, I'm pretty sure that witches are not known especially for their secrets.

Tim Mullally

You know that's reminiscent of The Shining correct? Not that that's a problem. Just a question.

Carlos Hoyer

Cannot believe y'all didn't mention that moment Brennan called out Ame for sucking at small talk 💀
