I believe that this is the best episode of the show. It’s not full of action or big payoffs. But it just has nothing but great scenes start to finish including the best scene in the whole show: Jamie takes a bath.

Northern men are very loyal to their own more than the southern lords. Northern folks usually arent knights, there are a few (ser rodrik and ser jorah) bc they worship the old gods while the southerners worship the faith of the 7 and to become a knight u have to make ur vows with that faith. Ned was warded in the Vale of Arryn by Jon Arryn where the most pious and honorable knights come from. the Arryn words are literally “as high as honor”. and Jon Arryn was a very honorable man. So even though Ned didnt believe in the faith and wasnt a knight his leadership and honor is built on both northern loyalty and stubbornness and knightly valor and chivalry. so with robb he has all of that and on top of that he is a tully and their words are “family, duty, honor”

Jaime's bath scene is my favorite scene in the entire show. Great performances and really captures the themes and complexity of the world. I always found it so interesting how Jaime's greatest deed, the kind of thing most knights would dream of doing, the kind of thing that would generally get turned into a heroic song (saving a city, protecting your father) made him a dishonorable and untrustworthy man in the eyes of the realm. No songs, just a title as Kingslayer that permanently branded him as a man without honor. It's fascinating to me how that shaped his morality going forward, as he adapted a Kingslayer persona, knowing he peaked at 17-18 as a hero, but has an entire life to live as a man everyone distrusts. -Jaime didn't take milk of the poppy because he was afraid he'd pass out and wake up with his entire arm missing. He didn't trust that this maester stripped of his chains would only treat the hand wound since he said the safest course is to remove the arm. -One thing to remember is that Robb is not just King of the North, but King of the North and Riverlands, since the Tullys and their banners pledged support to Robb. Catelyn is a Tully, daughter of the previous Lord, sister to the current Lord. If Robb would have executed his own mother, he would probably lose the support of the Riverlands. Catelyn agreed to a trade of prisoners without Robb's consent. Lord Karstark murdered child prisoners. Robb is looking at the optics of it, as currently he believes his rebellion against the throne is the morally righteous one, and letting his men murder prisoners loses him moral high ground. That's why his arguments against Edmure were centered around being seen by the realm as murderers and liars, if he let the murder of the Lannister children go unpunished or tried to hide the evidence of it. Cat trying to trade for the girls weakened their position, but doesn't have the same moral quandary. One might argue treason is treason, but these are the kind of complications a King has to litigate, and I'm not sure most would treat the crimes all the same, even Ned in a hypothetical. -Speaking of Ned, I think Jaime had the right of it when he said Ned judged him guilty the moment he set eyes on him. From Ned's perspective on the day KL fell, he arrived at the city to raping and pillaging from the Lannister soldiers, found the Queen and her children raped and butchered, and saw Jaime sitting on the throne with the King he was sworn to protect dead in a puddle of blood. To him, it would have looked like Jaime proving just as treacherous as his father and stabbing the king in the back as the definitive act of a sinister plot. But to 17-18 year old Jaime, he saved a city from burning from a tyrant. And he lost his honor from it because in this world, your oath is supposed to be sacred, and if you are sworn to protect a tyrant, you are supposed to die protecting that tyrant, as Barristan Semly would have done. I think that's the central question, is Barristan Selmy noble and honorable that he would have protected the Mad King and let him burn Kings Landing, or was Jaime noble and honorable by killing his king and preventing it.

Haha depending on the night, we definitely binge a couple episodes at the time. If we didn’t have a schedule, we’d do this one all the way through, for sure.
