I'm not sure that I really understand the Nick/Troy thing either. I don't see how all is forgiven so quickly after what happened at the fuel depot, but I do find the whole dysfunctional Otto family interesting. For me, at least, they're way better than the new characters we got in season 2.

I think both Nick and Troy share an obsessive, self-destructive personality, but it comes from very different places. Nick grew up with an overprotective mother, while Troy had the opposite experience—he lacked maternal attention altogether. Because of that, Troy seems to project a mother figure onto Madison. At the same time, Madison sees Troy as someone lost (as his son) and believes she understands him well enough to manipulate him. Troy also sees him self in Nick but from a jealous pov. Nick mirrors his own chaotic, self-destructive impulses without the moral judgment others impose. He represents an equal in a world where Troy feels like a monster; Nick doesn't flinch at Troy's darkness, even challenging it. He also admires Nick's raw survival edge and lack of pretense, qualities he craves amid constant rejection from his father and brother. But this dynamic is even more complicated and you will see later why

Also, on the bigger picture. Twd isn't a show about apocalypse or zombies, but a show that presents the discussion of Humanity vs Chaos and we see those fighting and pushing each other. And Fear twd isn't different from that (the only difference is that twd had better writers 😂). In this story Nick's represents caos transformed into Humanity and Madison Humanity turned into Caos, and those two forces fighting and challenging each other. And because of the mother- son relationship, each one thrive alone, away from each other.
