Coptic Lessons Index

Welcome to my new series for Patrons: introductory Coptic lessons! As I begin to learn Coptic, I want to share what I'm studying. Eventually, more polished videos that teach Coptic (Comprehensible Coptic) and Middle Egyptian (Ancient Egyptian in Action) will be published on ScorpioMartianus. But until that uncertain date, I want to give my Patrons the chance to start learning!

It's me, or you pronounce "mendrit"? Because I don't see that "d" written between the "n" and the "r".

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

That’s a great observation! It’s a regular phonetic phenomenon in many languages to insert a /d: between /n/ and /r/; this is why ἀνήρ is ἀνδρός in the genitive, and why Spanish tener in the future makes tendré. In my case, I wasn’t intended to make a /d/ sound, but the phonetics of the environment probably make it very likely to inevitable. Whether or not we should actively prevent this from occurring in our speech is an excellent question.
