πόθεν; ποῦ; ποῖ; whence? where? whither?

Χαῖρ’, ὦ φίλε, ποῖ καὶ πόθεν; Where’re ya off to, and where’re ya comin’ from? Πόθεν ἥκεις; Where have you arrived from? A more archaic English word for πόθεν is whence. Ποῖ εἶ; Whither will you go? Ποῦ is just used for something within a certain location.

You may be on a commune this very moment. If someone you know greets you and asks, ποῖ καὶ πόθεν; how would you respond? Let me know below.

Salvē , Lūcī, aliquid mihi est dē rēctā prōnūntiātiōne linguae Graecae classicae rogandum. Ferē̆ omnēs fīnālēsne diphthonghī -αι and -οι [äj] et [oj] prōnūntiantur, nōnne? Sed quid dē verbō Μαίᾱς?

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

Salvus sīs, mī optume Enrīce! Magnī faciō IPA tuum! ac bene notās. In Μαῖα sīc ascenditur et dēscenditur /máì̯a/ dum in Μαίᾱς /maí̯àːs/ sīc est phōnēmaticē.

[nä́j] an [näj́]? Grātiās tibī agō iterum!
