Huge number of extra panels and outtakes in the B-roll strip that posts two hours after this one in tiers 2 & 3! Bump up a tier this month and see the hundreds of other pieces for just a few dollars more!

I once overheard a couple "dudes of albums" get into a heated agreement about the transcendental majesty of The Velvet Underground. There I sat in my Portland coffeehouse chair late one evening, trying to put two brain cells together for a Portland Mercury column about fried chicken, intellectually squirming and grimacing inwardly as these two recent strangers fanned one another's flames to neutron star levels of incandescent insipidity.

It was declared and seconded that without the "genius" of Lou Reed, essentially no contemporary genres of music would have been possible, so I guess it's a great thing for us all that that asshole found a big pair of sunglasses and some dope and Jesus now I sound like Pat so I'm going to ask my wife what I'm actually mad about, probably this load-bearing wall we found in the house that seems to be buckling or me turning fifty or something

Distant Egg Song

You can practically see the spiritual journey that Pat takes to reach the understanding that yes, it's time to go there.

balbert

Todd Haynes's documentary a few years ago helped me "get" them a lot more, but I never actively disliked them, so mileage may vary

Josh Egbert

"From what hidden inventory of competence?" has been awarded a QuikPass into my store of comebacks against arguments for poor efforts.

GruntyGinMan

Damn Pat did an old school Finish Him in that last panel

blair

I'll venture to guess that the dudes of albums are what dropped the fried chicken piece into Nice Pete's voice

Kevin Jude

Wait what's the toilet paper for?

Morgan

It looks for all the world that Pat just magically shimmered into the room upon Teodor enjoying something he can be an asshole about. The dudes are all just used to Pat pulling a reverse-Batman to yuck someone's yum by this point.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

People who are dicks to other people about their music tastes suck. Years ago, my ex and I had a go-around about my liking Bjork and he said she was a schizophrenic banshee and I said that's what I like about her. He also shamed my daughter for liking Panic! at the Disco and Fallout Boy when she was a teenager. So fuck Pat and fuck all those judgmental twats.

Bob the Fish Productions

Being historically important and being fun to listen to aren't mutually inclusive. Any version of this argument about anything is just completely pointless self-aggrandizement, just pure resentment that someone has a thing that's important to them even though it isn't and never could be important to you. You ain't part of the equation either way, leave them alone.

Bruce Wright

Hey, I LIKE Nico. Like if the tobacco stains on an old man's hands could sing

Lionstooth

Look, team Téodor on this one. He gets a moratorium on the realm-of-ass eating, especially after Pat's absolute annihilation of his spirit. Let the boy recover.

Max Crowe

As a long-time VU skeptic, it gives me pause to share Pat's viewpoint about something, yet do I sense authorial sympathy for him here?

Allan

Competence, compensation, culture, all these C-words (no curses) to bounce off on USA's sorta-birthday They sounded like heroin addicts to me. Different strokes, not everybody wants to nod off into daydreams

E Corcoran

He's married to Monkey from Quadrophenia

E Corcoran

In this house the only schizophrenic banshee is Elizabeth Fraser

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

She was my ex-husband's banshee of choice. Carolyn's Fingers was his favorite song.

Bruce Wright

He is indeed. "It is impossible to achieve the aim without suffering."

E Corcoran

A man of at least musical taste

emitydna

2 thoughts: that last line is such an all-time fucking legendary takedown, and many of the embarrassing moments of my life would have turned out better if someone had nodded to me when it was my part

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

I discovered The Sugarcubes in 1989 and never looked back.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

This was ex-husband. Asshole ex was a boyfriend. Ex-husband was a post punk Echo and the Bunnymen type of guy. Ex-boyfriend was a ska guy. But I do not judge lest I be branded a big old hypocrite.

Jay Y

On the one hand, I like neither The Beatles nor cherry flavor. On the other, prog rock is to music what Hegel is to philosophy and DFW / Joyce / (House of Leaves? Does anyone read that anymore?) are to literature.

Headaches: The Band

Steven Nguyen

Not the point of the strip, but that loose roll of toilet paper on the coffee table takes me back to some uncherished days living with some real dirtbag roommates

E Corcoran

Headaches the Gorilla

Tom P

this is definitely why Pat was doing it , and if T had been playing something else, Pat would have gotten on his case about that.

Tom P

as an individual experience new-yorkness, VU are pretty good, but - at the risk of undermining foundational principles of Achewood operational theory - it is ok to not like something, even if it was influential

Condorito

My go-to phrase for that is "it's not my jam, but I respect the jam"

blair

Yep. There's a vast unacknowledged swath of culture-things that are overrated, but they're so grossly overrated that there's still plenty of room for them to be good, enjoyable, or innovative.

Johnny Deans

I’m certain I had nearly the exact same argument with a former girlfriend when she was my pre-girlfriend… I was the pro VU side of the situation. I should have seen the red flag…

Daniel Burt

Oddly, I get the sense that Lou Reed and Pat would bond, somehow. Whereas Teodor would try gamely but, once the shock of celebrity wore off, would find Reed unbearable.

Matthew Miller

The Velvet Underground are the Beatles for anybody with a Master’s in Comp Lit and a heroin addiction.

Matthew Miller

I’ll bet Pat and Lou Reed have a lot of the same cookbooks.

Matthew Miller

If not for them, all music would have been recorded by bands fronted by cartoons. That is where we were headed in 1968.

E Corcoran

Friend of mine bought a video birthday greeting from her for me. It's my most treasured possession

The Beatles -> Monkees -> Archies trajectory, one of pop music's more intriguing evolutionary dead ends.

I remember back when being cool was cool, but it no longer is.

Douglas Wykstra

I haven't listened to enough VU to know where I stand on them, but I can say that the "Perfect Day" overdose montage in Trainspotting makes me think that Lou Reed's contributions to music have to be a net positive no matter what. Between Pat's love for math rock and the pedantic and joyless compositions of Robert Fripp, I infer that he is the type of person who believes music has to be "correct" in order to be good--or worse still, is the type of person who just happens to gravitate to music that gives the impression of straining towards correctness.

Matthew Miller

The most baffling part from 1968’s perspective is that the Monkees became real, the Beatles gave up and the Archies are still going strong at checkout counters nationwide.

Sedric and Charlie

As a hungry slut of music, I like both the Velvet Underground and Robert Fripp. I don't strictly speaking want to side with either of these men, because they are Pat and Téodor, but I guess I'm going to side with Pat because even though I agree with T's stance more, that is one hell of a finishing move

Matthew Miller

I — I took the second to last train from Clarksville. And that has made all the difference.

Matthew Miller

A date with Pat is sometimes referred to “a walk on the bewildering side.”

DeVotchKa does a bitchin version of Venus in Fur

Oppido

Teodor's just insecure because he had to put that capo halfway up the neck to find chords he could play.

Oppido

Enjoy eating "franks" and having your face exist mere inches from loam.

John Robinson

I have never been more aligned with T.

Nicholas Williams

Yeah fuck Pat hard on this one opinion-wise but T needs to make it not so easy to land absolutely devastating burns.

Uncle Elephant

Thanks to this comment and a Wikipedia detour, I learned that The Chipmunks formed as early as 1958. Thanks for that.

Traedran

I agree heavily with T, minus liking cherry flavour. I've genuinely had someone call me a bad person for not liking cherries or chocolate. Like, sorry that you get to have any cherries and/or chocolate I am given since I will not use them. I love lots of flavours, but Teodor knows exactly what kind of realm he can eat for thinking I'm trying to disgust people for not liking that specific one.

Tom Morris

As I always enjoy telling people, John Cale was from Ammanford.

Tom Morris

Oh my god! Having to explain to people the difference between kitchen roll and toilet roll, and why having toilet roll out on the coffee table looks like the living room was recently used as a wank palace.

J. Alex

Talking to Pat is the realm of ass of the conversational cosmos.

Josh Egbert

This is my argument when someone trashes things like Nickelback or Twilight. No I do not consume them but I'm quite sure I've enjoyed something created by a person who would cite them as a profound influence. Tomatoes grow in dirt, you know?

Jeff

lol I was listening to Owen’s cover of Femme Fatale yesterday! REM also covered it and There She Goes Again

C C

I always loved the fried chicken technique from that article. I've used it over and over again. Daytime Dan seems to know his way around a fried chicken. Nice Pete's line "when I want fried chicken, I usually do not want it, "tomorrow" has stuck in my mind, a wise observation to be sure.

Song Club with John Krane

I tell my musician friends, "I respect the Velvet Underground, they're just not for me," which is my way of saying "I hate the Velvet Underground but I don't want to argue about it."

E Corcoran

"they're gonna have a real good time together"

E Corcoran

also, I missed "heated agreement" first time round. perfect

The Jam are a great band

2scrogz

I felt like the Dead caught some strays there... Sure, their stuff post-1976 is questionable-to-bad, but there was a brief golden era in the early '70s, exemplified by Europe '72, that I would put up against any psychedelic or folk rock of that era for musicianship, versatility, and synchronous improvisation. It's not for everyone, but it is, IMO, some of the greatest American rock'n'roll ever created.

2scrogz

The bass-line from "Take A Walk On The Wild Side" is pretty good. The rest of their work? mehhh...

Jay

He *is* kind of the Asshole Fairy, he appears when opinions are voiced

Jonathan

I don't like The Beatles.

Achewood

apparently that was Lou reed solo. Maybe he had a thousand dollars and could hire a real band.

Achewood

I thought they were going to start jerking each other off right in front of a perfectly cute barista, completing the mythos of the Total Record Dork

Achewood

It continues to amaze me that one person a year might see that article. And it is you!

Achewood

I can't stand fish, and I honestly think people who OOH and AAH over oysters are just actual dickheads, so I will not quarrel with you about cherries and chocolate. Be well, particular brother.

Traedran

I'm all fine with people loving things I dislike. I do enjoy me some fish, but oysters I despise. It's when they start getting on a high horse on you not enjoying their particular interest that I have to wonder what kind of personal damage they took, so long ago, that gives them a moral investment in making sure people only eat foods from the prescribed list. It is Not Okay to dislike this particular flavour or texture. They will tear down a friendship and mock you in public because you don't enjoy tuna, or chocolate, or cilantro, or what-have-you. I've spent a week in a padded cell, and when I see someone get genuinely offended I do not share 100% of their food interests, I keep thinking, "You needed those kind people at the facility much more than I did."

Ruxine

Happy Birthday! Blast bang bang rock and roll by art brut and look up jayne county's tour schedule. Its what pat would do. And what I just did. she's not touring.

Doc G

My favorite part about this argument is whoever you agree with, everybody loses. Onstad really touched a nerve with this one huh? Lotta people in these comments all tryna look like they wouldn't dive right into this conversation... search your feelings luke

And then I went after camping. What’s next? Steak? School vouchers? Treehouses? I’m like nicer-arms Anne Coulter

A. C.

I would like a book of the patreon comics please. and also of all the rest

Achewood

You and me both, pal. Why does the publishing industry make me out to be chopped liver? I am forsaken like an Ancient Greek fisherman, or something. Alive but lonely in my cursed dinghy.

Achewood

But this did give me the idea of self-publishing again, which seems to be my lot in life.

A. C.

I'll buy em. If I don't, I deserve to be repeatedly emailed until I buy at least two copies of each self published

Miles

Man, T really walked right into that one

Achewood
