While casually sorting through a box of family memorabilia in his mother's basement, Ray came across this old newspaper clipping. Had he read more deeply of the artifact he might have pieced together a few threads which shed light onto the life and times of his grandfather, and given them more to talk about. However, fearing eye strain in the low-lighting conditions, as well as boredom, he figured he could just roust the reanimated old coot from whatever dive he was presently haunting and ask him directly the next time he had some free time.

I'm going to need closure on the Martinond Street thieves and the how their fastening needs developed.

Josh Egbert

I guess I've never been 100% clear on this, but was/is there a humans's Achewood? Did the cats run the humans off as they gained increased intelligence? This feels very prequel to me.

Mina Roller

Happy almost anniversary to Antonyne and his bride, Mayola!

Bruce Wright

The Sam's heist smells like an inside job to me.

Linus Mixson

My understanding is that there was, formerly, a more contentious relationship between the animals and humans of Achewood, which was (possibly — I'm not clear on my timeline) resolved by the construction of the Underground, and a subsequent significant increase in the sophistication of both animal and human civilization in the area. This is, to be clear, merely my understanding.

Josh Egbert

Thats fantastic information, thank you. This blotter reads like they (us) are not yet aware of the feline population but perhaps soon will be?

Clench and Cheese

Oh to be a fly on the wall when Ray's mother goes into the attic. Imagine what she THROWS AWAY! Also, the forest leaf cigarette was certainly material. In fact, it's the key to whole case (Todd's ancestor sitting on a stump trying to lure villagers with his insane banjo chops is what I am seeing here)

Jason Pargin

This is wonderful but also I'm so slow that it took me a while to remember the main characters are cats

b.zap

Stantz had it coming

Achewood

Stay tuned...for police blotter September 14 1937

Achewood

Mixson and Ken have painted an accurate picture in the broad stroke fashion. But yes, the animal / underground world is generally understood to keep itself separate from observation by the human world.

Achewood

It'll be easy to remember because it's my wedding anniversary too now :)

Achewood

My suspicion is that Antonyne broke in, customized a ring, and beat it

Achewood

My suspicion is that Antonyne tossed the butt of his hand-rolled down. But they weren't as good with cat DNA as they are now (seriously, this was like a huge shark tank startup) so all crime solutions were conjecture and confirmation bias.

Achewood

There may be some bootlegging badgers too, selling white lightning to the rougher cats who were the liaison to the civilized underground.

Achewood

To be fair, both guys were complete idiots. You can just tell. It wasn't even recorded as battery or assault, just "hitting"

Achewood

Threadville was mentioned only by name in a the arc where Nice Pete kidnaps Philippe, but I don't remember if I left clues about it anywhere else. What did I miss? A blog? Oh, I had an early Téodor painting where he was driving in the hills near Threadville, but somebody bought that twenty years ago and I don't think anyone's seen it since then.

GruntyGinMan

My feeling here is that Nice Pete went over to Threadville(where they have a Bell Market) because it's the sort of place name one would expect to drive by for a quarter of a mile, with a lonely gas a station with one pump, and then a sign informing you that you are leaving Threadville.

Achewood

That sounds about right. I think there used to be a modest pest control chemical transfer depot, but now it’s just a boring superfund site.

Achewood

GGM reminds me above that nice Pete has mentioned driving there at other times. Incidentally, bell market in San Carlos (now gone) was where I bought the N. O. Rum that launched the character blogs in 2004

Hunter Tammaro

Is the Smoke in the Underground inspired by the humans' tavern? Is this an Alligator Lounge situation?

Achewood

What’s alligator lounge? But good catch — I suspect the underground folk stole the original sign and brought it to their location, giving it its name and marquee.

Hunter Tammaro

Good for them! (In The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder painstakingly recreates the Alligator Lounge, a New York dive bar, down to the tears in the barstools' upholstery.)

Fred Morlan

If this ain’t just a Radiohead music video script

Glenn Ramsy

These are just so entertaining. If I have $16 dollars lying around when you get a slim volume of these together, it's almost certainly yours. I think that'd be reasonable. $16. Guys?

Achewood

Apparently I would enjoy Radiohead videos, I don’t think I’ve seen any besides a dark one where a car slowly chases a scared man

Achewood

I could see this happening. I have all this self publishing equipment. Maybe I need to make small expensive books. Sixteen might be a bit high.

Glenn Ramsy

When you say self-publishing equipment , do you mean a laser printer with toner at 60%? But seriously, the police blotters are some of my favorite content from back in the day. I can tell you love writing them.

Achewood

Binder, trimmer, large format color printing…but yes the heart of the operation is a laser printer that wishes it had never been born.

Fred Morlan

I can drop some recs if desired

Achewood

Sure! Also Fred Morlan did you know Portland has two famous plumbing supply houses which bear your name

Achewood

I read that as tears as in “crying,” and enjoyed it very much

Bruce Wright

I have your other books. I would feel obligated to proceed.

Linus Mixson

Yes, "contentious" was a misleading word choice on my part, insofar as it suggests that humans were aware of the existence of said contention.

Fred Morlan

I have heard of the Portland-area plumbing company, though I honestly forget how - I've never been. Music video recs (since I've thought entirely too much about them): No Surprises, Karma Police (which you've seen), Street Spirit (Fade Out), Burn the Witch, There There, Just, Knives Out. Also, the Thom Yorke/UNKLE song Rabbit In Your Headlights.

This is Paranoid Android erasure

Professor Hazard

Sorry/you're welcome for infecting you with the itch to explore more small world-big world stuff, I very much enjoyed the narrative that eluded the newspaper

Matt Mitchell

The Philippe Times and the community college course registries are related interesting formats. I guess the Philippe Times is sort of the modern analogue to the olde tyme police blotter

Sedric and Charlie

'Threadville By Daylight' was always one of my favourite paintings in the gallery, along with 'I Danced My Legs Down To The Knees'. I printed the latter out once to use as the cover for a mix CD

Fred Morlan

I’ve always thought that was an outlier compared to the rest.

Sedric and Charlie

I would agree, Paranoid Android is highly atypical. If memory serves, Radiohead commissioned it for that precise reason. I've never actually seen the cartoon it's derived from

Fred Morlan

I haven’t either. It’s worth one’s time, to be clear, but I just don’t think it reaches the same kind of “this is an expansion of the art of the original song in some manner” level as the various live action ones I mentioned above.

Justin Schardin

At least a couple of the people mentioned in these have to be ancestors of our current cast of characters. I wonder if Templeton is a distant relative of Lyle.

Ruxine

There's a dangerous children's gang on the loose, stealing wedding supplies and hiding in badger holes! Detectives are baffled! Dumbfounded! Chet Morton pulled up the drive in his old jalopy...
