Like most men who spent their childhood bored out of their skull while tailing a frugal mother through musty thrift stores and garage sales, I am reflexively cheap about nearly everything. I'm only triggered into buying meat if there's some kind of flashy promotional sign over it; yesterday on a walk I nearly asked a neighbor if they were discarding some decomposing birch logs I could burn this winter. I will buy six jars of juice that are on BOGO even though I don't drink juice. ("What if we have a party?") I'm still aghast that a McDonald's meal now costs more than actual food, and then I'm aghast that I still want to go to McDonald's despite all information in the universe proving this is a terrible idea no matter by which of the thousand avenues you approach it. Life is a long passage of healing from childhood, and money is the girlfriend I'm always afraid will have moved out while I was at work.

Which is why when we were visiting friends in Appleton, Wisconsin last week, and we stopped into Spats "The Tav on the Ave" for happy hour, I made sure to order the full-price cheese curds. Because I am healing, and I want my wife to know I love her. (She's from Wisconsin, so fried dairy is a love language.)

Andy Nemeth

I gotta ask after decades of reading your work: is the name Achewood an oblique reference to 100 Acre Wood?

Josh Egbert

Sometimes love is wondering if you trapped an innocent person, indeed. Kinda starting to hope we see Molly on her own.

Distant Egg Song

She's got those Roast Beef anxiety-attack eyes in the penultimate panel. She held out for 2 decades, but she's finally getting got.

David Mandeix

I always find these strips about Beef so interesting because if you objectively asked him what was more important to him, he would probably say “Molly’s happiness” but in the moment he squirms and panics

Steven Saunders

Beef, I know you got brain problems, but you're really dropping the ball here.

Achewood

I love that there has been speculation about this for nearly as long as the comic has been around. It's a happy accident, but all I can claim is that this idea was probably swimming around in my head as I formulated the framework, having read a lot of Milne just like everybody else, having talking bears and otters, etc. The term Achewood itself was meant to be a play on wormwood/absinthe (more about this on achewood.com). But I'm happy it does this lovely double duty, even if the second form of duty can't be 100% consciously credited.

Achewood

And thanks for following so long Andy! Your Purple Heart is in the mail. (There is no purple heart in the mail :(

Jay Y

It's not that Molly isn't worth the $3 upgrade, it's that when you come from Circumstances, you come to know that the world is comprised of complex systems and machinations all leading to a single outcome of getting yelled at.

Achewood

Maybe something could finally bloom with Téodor, thus imploding the entire fabric of Achewod

Song Club with John Krane

I can just tell that this restaurant's stools are slightly too high and that the restaurant has a tin ceiling that makes the din of conversation sound like that of a grade school cafeteria.

Achewood

I issue this as a gentle warning to all men who are getting overly reliant on their partners. I have started taking aspirin, drinking water, and using sunscreen entirely of my own accord, but am smart enough not to brag to my wife about it.

Achewood

"Getcha comin' back for more" is all they mean by it. But I'm sure every patron of that dive has had the titillating realization I sense at play here!

Achewood

Knowing the right thing to do can sometimes live in a compartmental universe from ability to follow through. What we don't see here is Beef's self-castigation later; Beef is definitely a guy who will replay the incident over and over til he feels worse than anyone else involved.

Achewood

Yes, I realize it's been a dismal time between them lately. I can happily report this maps in no way onto my personal life. Finally.

Josh Egbert

When did Dornheim get here?

Achewood

I wanted to ask you why we were talkin bout bitcoin all of a sudden, but then I brained up and did a google search, which reveals that satori is a term for sudden enlightenment. Succinct, accurate.

Josh Egbert

I just know T has fanfic under his bed where such things have already occurred & undoubtedly imploded.

Achewood

This is quite insightful. Yes, Beef is definitely the sort whose only prediction for the immediate future is adversity and challenge, in which he will likely fail. And if he'd stop yelling at himself, he'd see the world was actually rather quiet.

Derek Adams

I empathize with Beef here. When there are opaque Systems in play I never know what unstated rules are there for a reason. Maybe the guy who doesn't spit in the cheese curds only works 7-11:30. Asking poorly paid employees for atypical things invites Chaos into the universe.

Achewood

They had those clear plexiglass sheets behind all the booths, and the booths were weirdly tight with the tabletop too low, and the benches seemed to pitch you forward. The acoustics are as you describe.

b.zap

A restroom revelation, the pee-piphany

Achewood

Okay, that was definitely supposed to be the title of the strip

Condorito

You either get better, or get out.

Condorito

This may apply to all players in this comic, including Spats (which is a great pun with the comic, btw)

Achewood

Great examples of the paranoid/embattled mind. In this case, I think he was just being cheap, but I completely get the Harmed being way too sensitive to the ghosts of long-ago trauma.

Achewood

I honestly didn't realize the comedic appropriateness of the name until halfway through writing. I just liked basing it on an actual restaurant I went to. But oh what sweet kismet.

kdusjjdhxksj

Yeah sorry I'm with beef on that one. Sometimes the happy hour menu is what happens because the fryer is being boiled out, I don't fuckin know how the kitchen works in this place. Also I don't always have the spare emotional bandwidth to verbally request fried cheese from a stranger, and that's probably one of my better qualities

Oppido

Oh boy, Molly doesn't deserve such an awful fate any more than Teodor deserves such a lucky one.

Ryan Boyle

Vacation in a midsize Wisconsin city does a lot of frugal heavy lifting.

Bruce Wright

Beef is definitely riding on the thin edge of feminine rage here

kdusjjdhxksj

He sees this as a situation where he can't safely act without more information, she interprets this as her not being worth three dollars. Both broken interpretations stemming from Circumstances. I do lean Beef on this one though because I have worked enough service jobs to naturally avoid asking questions wherever possible

Achewood

The preponderance of great custard and cherry pies does a lot to even things out.

Bruce Wright

Oh, God, the Covid shields that assumed virii can't go to the left or right

Achewood

If bandwidth is low then you just got to do you, but it would be a breakthrough for Beef to realize that even just one more line of sincere communication/his thinking could dig him out of a lot of his holes.

Achewood

She's got that pepper spray...

Achewood

I think covid can quantum entangle at a distance, landing on hamburgers and up the nose

Achewood

Hey, Cornelius did a nice job cleaning up T's whack-shack. But it's not just a lack of Kleenex evidence that defines a great man, sure.

Jay Y

Beef has cPTSD and I think people who have dealt with similar stuff respond to that. I would further argue that programming is sort of a self-soothe task because it's a system you can figure out (reliable inputs and outputs) and demonstrate prowess in with low risk of it yelling at you.

Achewood

Yeah my time working a shitty cook job definitely made me hyper aware of putting unwanted strain on the kitchen. I used to get genuinely pissed off when someone ordered a stir fry at 8:57pm, because I had an hour of station breakdown to get done by ten and it was always a mad dash.

kdusjjdhxksj

Strong agreement there. One shouldn't half ass an answer about why one is quarter assing a scenario. If the thing isn't going to happen, say that and say why. If that's even harder than doing the thing, take the easy way out and do the thing.

Achewood

JY: Beef actually installed a compiler that makes his errors flash in bold red and show an ascii poo. (Maybe it's even the original ascii poo; he installed this decades ago)

Achewood

"One shouldn't half ass an answer about why one is quarter assing a scenario." That's some sound grandpa wisdom, there

GruntyGinMan

That last bit is on the sign at the trail head for the state hunting lands by the Mothman igloos in West Virginia

Oppido

I can only imagine what the 2020 lockdowns were like for Molly and Beef. Remember those cold-weather months when we were all perma-indoors and climbing the walls? I'd be interested to see a flashback strip about how these two navigated the shutdown times.

Oppido

I'm surprised Molly didn't remind Beef that she used to work in fast food/fast coffee and thus has insight into how restaurant kitchens operate. Maybe she knows by now that reminding Beef of things he ought to know is a cheat code for a ruined evening.

Achewood

I've finally been found out, all of Achewood was actually written by the national park service signage department. Game's up, people.

Achewood

Oh, they got so into sourdough that they put on a lot of weight, so it was mostly just them taking long walks  — her in her mask, him in a full beekeeper bag.

Oppido

Molly and Sondra ought to compare notes at some point about what to carry in a world where men are. (Sorry Chris, I realize I'm just pitching you potential strips today, but I actually would love to see those two chop it up sometime, in whatever context. Do what you want, though.)

Ste & Danni JM

I think this strip shows perfectly what's kept Molly with Beef through their ups and downs. Understanding Beef's issues, and occasional attacks of hallucinatory self-loathing.

Achewood

I like the sound of that! But...can I write two-sided dialogue that doesn't rely entirely on dick jokes? we...shall...see...

Achewood

That's right, she could have pulled rank here. The fallout would have dropped the temperature of the date...but it was already failing when they walked into a bar named after nominative determinism.

Oppido

Beef all adding wheels to his private slow-pitch softball booth and shuffling down Via Verde four steps behind his lady

Achewood

There is a compassion for him of course, and it's been there since their early times. But I do sense a wearing-thin of the marital veil. What will catalyze Beef's development into a more fully realized partner? Maybe he will have a near death experience, like Ray did with the Tofutti Cuties.

Bruce Wright

I got into baking too! Gained a lot of weight

Achewood

Fat Beef Traveling In Mobile Phone Booth, a painting I am currently composing in my head

Oppido

That'd be poetic, since it was a near-death experience (but from the other side of death, though) that brought them together in the first place.

b.zap

Sry folks Teodor ate all the curds

Minty

Do one where the poor cats are in love and reading it makes me feel nice.

Achewood

I'll see if that can be arranged. It would be nice to balance things out with them right now.

Clench and Cheese

you think that Molly would know what beef is like after all these years. he used to cheap out by complaining about sodium but now it's about inconveniencing a waitress by making her look up the PLU during happy hour.

Achewood

Decent, crisp, little "moisture" under the batter, all that. But the big revelation on this trip was the wave of breakfast egg muffin sandwiches with pesto going around. Green food has entered the Wisconsin building.

Minty

Excellent, thank you.

Achewood

Poll: What's Beef's tipping percentage, or logic?

Henri

C’mon now. C’mon. Dragging dead weight along the unmarked trail to oblivion is a shared responsibility. We just see it as ”honorable” and ”only fucking option available”; whereas they see it as ”oh well” and ”oh dearie me”.

Henri

He subscribes to the nordic school on tipping, but only philosophically. In real social life he chooses the suggested lowest amount and feels a 50/50 mix of shame and annoyance every time. Except once after six or seven frozen margaritas, when he tipped the middle suggestion and felt weightless for a fleeting moment.

Henri

On the topic of being reflexively cheap: I was with my brother in London to see Oasis this past weekend. There is a Rolling Stones shop at Carnaby Street, and we both bought these massive tongue logo fridge magnets for a whopping 12£ each to proudly display our lifelong support for the band in our respective kitchens at home. We went for fish and chips, and once out, he realized he had lost his 12£ fridge magnet. Instead of pulling a dementedly pathetic spectacle of pulling his hair and openly blaspheming in the middle of Carnaby Street, he just calmly decided to walk back into the Stones boutique to purchase another exorbitantly priced tongue magnet. Something I could have never done, but am starting to consider now because of how this scene impacted me. Isn’t this what older brothers are for? Isn’t this a microcosm of the whole Gallagher reunion? Noel lost a fortune in his divorce, so he popped back to Wembley as for a lost kitchen magnet? Is this a core teaching of brotherhood?

Henri

My son, who is also an older brother, commented: ”perhaps they’ll display the magnet at the chippie, seeing how they were also into the Rolling Stones.” As a younger brother I get this chilling realization: we are only tolerated because we are amusing in our idiocy. The older brothers have foretold all of this the second we (the ”liams”) arrived, crying, into a world whose peace would be shattered forever.

Clench and Cheese

Beef might well add whatever he's got wadded in his pocket to weak sauce tips he sees on the tables as he goes to the loo which is why he never dines out except at happy hour. Whereas Ray pays his $30 tab with $100 bill and tells the waitress to keep the change. but Ray, she says, this is a 50! Ray says 50 is change, baby. yeah he stole it from Sammy Davis Jr but so what

Sean Wolf

You shock me, Sir. Never was a single leaf of arugula found in the greater Fox River Valley/NE Wisconsin. Chopped iceberg and ranch only. Pesto? Madness!

blair

I was thinking about this very strip, only the AAAAAAAAAAA part at the other end.

Achewood

Henri - yes definitely a no eye contact with server after tipping kind of guy

Achewood

Very few men would imagine the Roast Beef tipping scenario you describe, Mr. Carroll, but it intrigues me. Perhaps he acts this way after scoring a small coding job, or beating Ray in a bet over hummingbird flight path.

Achewood

Well clearly I'm out of touch with the fate and finances of Oasis (I listened to Champagne Supernova on Spotify a few months ago, so hopefully that put them in stripey new track jackets). I will say your brother's mature and honorable way of handling his mistake put a little swell of pride in my own chest. He's like a Clint Eastwood character, played by Clint Eastwood, in a Clint Eastwood movie.

Achewood

I kid you not, I had a fontina galette at a place in Egg Harbor while the kitchen made stecchino sandwiches.

Achewood

man there are 81 comments in this thread and I am starting to realize I really need to do a happy strip

Josh Egbert

Dont be too hard on yourself. Compared to Pat In The Parking Lot, this is pretty easygoing.

kdusjjdhxksj

I do not know the percentage, but I think it's not bad and I think they get it no matter what. My question is whether he calculates to the penny or rounds, and in which direction.

Nicholas Williams

I propose we start a chain of breakfast restaurants called Egg Harbor.

Jay Williams

Beef is a good egg, deep down, even though he’s from Circumstances, and he does realize his shortcomings. You have to think that he can pull out of this shallow dive before it becomes irreversible. Besides, to take away his Golden Tabloid AND Molly seems like karmic piling on.

Matt Mitchell

Something like 17%. He knows the days of 15% being standard are long gone, but a twisted coupling of tortured logic and embedded frugality keeps it from reaching 20%

Henri

The brothers cut a deal with the brand with the three stripes, and one third of London were walking around in stripey track tops that said ”the band with the three stripes” on the back. I wish I was exagerating. Actually I don’t, it was glorious. I have nothing to add to the Clint Eastwood bit. You absolutely nailed it. I can hear the jaw harp now that I relive the scene.

2026-09-20 10:00 "You may fascinate a woman by giving her a piece of cheese", is old courtship wisdom. I suppose beef gets most of his wisdom from forums on perl scripting, or maybe his anxiety is just stronger than wisdom. Happy for your wife though, at least someone's getting cheese.

Ranch dressing is my wife's love language. Fried cheese curds or whatever are just a delivery device.

Achewood

This is going to sound weird but, I am your wife

Achewood

This adds extra visual interest to the British millinery category of “fascinators.”

Datura

That thing about the computer mode is too real

Alexander Rediger

Unrelated to the comic-- I'm rereading McCarthy's "the Road" and this passage sounded like Achewood-- like something Roast Beef would say in an apocalypse, or an All-Family Great Outdoor Fight: "This is my child, he said [to himself]. I wash a dead man's brains out of his hair. That is my job."

Achewood

Good god, may reading that book never be the Lord's plan for me. But respect to that hardass sentence.

Achewood

anyone who was there at diskette times should have a healthy fear of badly-made software

David Mandeix

Everyone has to cross the Bechdel Rubicon some day…

Declan Buchanan

worked overnight at mcdonald's for a while—one guy ordered 400 chicken nuggets just the right way and crashed whatever server kept the entire drive-thru up. murphy's law and such

Achewood

I am here requesting at least one more story from the "Bizarre post-midnight at McDonald's" genre.

Declan Buchanan

two-for one special: once i had to take an order for a couple in a huge arguement and physically guide them over to another till because it was going on so long a line started to form at goddamn 11:40PM, the wife ordered a small black coffee and threw it at the husband's head. a week later, a young homeless man gave me a skateboard he picked up and realized he didn't want because i spent my break talking to him about the playstation 2. rode the skateboard home—handy as i lived hella downhill—and it broke the second i reached my doorstep. you learn a lot about your common man workin fries two blocks away from a halfway house

Achewood

And boy did you deliver! Nice set. I smell an airport bestseller, a la Kitchen Confidential or Julie & Julia. Isn't the Macdoo coffee famously — legally — scalding hot? We all hope you work in a better restaurant now.
