Here is the production debris and notes, plus a screenshot of the strip midway through layout. And for those true compleatists, here is the link to Spats "The Tav On the Ave." Doesn't all that food look like just the thing to bring the shine back to a weary traveler's eyes? Well, when we got there it was something called "Mile of Music" where every business hosts live bands, and to keep things simple they were just offering a tiny happy hour menu (plus the curds). So, I ate something like my eighth hamburger of the two week trip, which was about four more than I wanted, but you don't go ordering the chicken salad wrap in the suburban Midwest, you play to their strengths. (Lauren had to warn me twice not to order wraps, or any salad with a "strawberry balsamic" — which is basically red IHOP syrup on spinach, or, a very flat way of having a soda.)

I haven't forgotten I owe Tiers 2 & 3 some content from this week! I'll be backfilling over the next couple days. Nobody will get burned on this deal.

Yo if those curds were Malcore's, a realm would not be enough.

Blake Gross

You were correct to revise "dill mayo" to "ranch." "Dill mayo" is a fiction promulgated by FIBs. "Dill ranch" would have also been acceptable because that is a thing that is sometimes served with fried curds.

I was a little disappointed with Spats' menu. Getting sweet onion bacon jam and salsa verde with my walleye seems kind of sacrilegious.

Bruce Wright

I would also be intensely skeptical of Spats’ “heirloom tomato and farro salad.”

Darin' Aaron Magoo made a lateral move to the Spatio

Achewood

alright without looking what was that guy's actual name

Achewood

Yeah when we walked in the dark place with its permanent dive smell and humidity, I could not reconcile it with the Brussels sprouts and scallops I saw on Yelp. Yes I still use yelp because I am 843573984534

Achewood

You can always tell when there's some young hotshot in the kitchen who's watched three minutes of Guy Fieri and just knows he can vibe out a revolution. Everybody knows you serve fried walleye with a piece of rye bread and potato pancakes.

Achewood

Dill now THAT is the secret flavor in ranch ! Sorry to always call back to my own lines (Ray discovering nutmeg flavor in coke, in case my lines aren't as famous as I thought)

b.zap

Couldn't say, I was too deep in my jalapenita power plate to notice

Achewood

I've barely cracked the surface of WI food subtlety yet. We were trying to check out Maria's Pizza on w forest home in Milwaukee because we heard about the crazy shape pizzas, but ended up heading to door county early.

Achewood

Jai in the Sky was another fiesta name for the Darin' Aaron Magoo guy, it turns out. Ray came out as Sure Shootin' Rex Dandycorn, and Beef just got the piece with the tombstone on it.

b.zap

He probably also got heartburn and not even from the food

Getting a real Lovecraft feel from the first page bottom left

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

When you're back in the area definitely hit up Maria's. The pizza is good and freeform shaped and it's the kind of place where you can imagine an argument in the kitchen not impeding the flow of service. Malcore's white cheese curds are my fave to eat fresh probably because I grew up with them. I preferred the battered and fried kind without seasoning but with a cranberry or lingonberry tart jam.

Achewood

Okay, admitting I have never read Lovecraft, so I need to ask in what way? The crazy fonts thing?

Joshua M

“Mile of Music” where I try to go out to eat and every single restaurant in walking distance has a band playing would have me in an extremely Fuck You Friday mood.

Achewood

It was not a night to be out if you wanted to hear your partner. I think Garth Brooks was playing the Popeye's

Achewood

Lauren taught me the "Wendy's fries dipped into a Wendy's chocolate shake" thing so I get the counterintuitive stuff

Bruce Wright

It's the breakdown in reality (and you really should read Lovecraft, if only to learn how irritating eighteenth-century affectations can be).

Achewood

I tried to read some Henry James. What a pile of shit! It made me so mad

Jason S

Please do some kind of merch tie-in with Spats

Achewood

Well, I did just write them a new bathroom sign. (The wording in the first instance of the sign was copy and pasted from a photo I took of the actual bathroom sign at Spats.)

Matt Mitchell

“What was her necklace made of?” “Jewelry.”

I want to like the sweet and savory, but I just can’t get into it- that’s a me thing though; I intellectually know that it’s got to work, but I look just like Philippe when Teodor makes him try pork chops with applesauce: Noooo!

Nicholas Williams

holy christ is that a fucking pimento cheese sandwich skewered into that bloody mary/michelada

Pubdoggy

Would buy an Eat A Realm Of Curds tee

Achewood

Aye, it would do big numbers in Wisconsin as well, whose currently tee trends are “Drink Wisconsibly” and “Ope!” What to put on the back though

Achewood

If Bloody Marys weren’t fifty percent sodium by volume, this would be my driving range quencher. I’ve never seen a man garnish a thermos with a sandwich, but I also haven’t traveled much in the American south.

Achewood

That’s when I knew a strip was forming

Achewood

Aerosolized popper grease is a real thing. TGIFrylung

Achewood

It works so well in American Chinese food. But applesauce on latkes? Mint jelly on lamb? Why the ever loving fuck did you turn a spill into an icon

Pubdoggy

Téodor obvs

Nicholas Williams

I've seen them done with a fried jalapeño popper but an entire sandwich is new to me. For the record, a celery stick is the only dignified garnish.
