(From the strip, for those who prefer the text this way) No word of it a lie. The day after I found the little comic booklet which inspired this week’s installment, the text you read in the strip began feeding out of the hemispheric cleft in my brain – the trench of the corpus callosum, if you are medical — on a tickertape so pleasantly measured that I trod upstairs, opened Mecklintosh, and typed it onto the empty page in exactly the spots you see it. A barometric thunder blanket of confessional calm settled about me; nothing needed to be invented, only explored and shared. There was no great squabbling crest and unprecedented dénouement to engineer. The point made itself somewhere toward the end, the art was easy, and I was satisfied. It was so effortless, in fact, I didn’t notice until much afterward that I had written a diary comic just like the one which inspired it.

Here are the very few bits of the vapor trail this thing left as it punctured the Oort of Adobe, gathered in one place and minimally fiddled-with.

I first learned about Popeye-themed Tijuana Bibles in the Stephen King book The Green Mile, when the incompetent/sadistic prison warden is caught jerking off to one, a detail which I believe they left out of the movie.

Oh, to be "hung" and not just "sorta there, usually". Anyway, two comments in and both about dongage. Not a great start; sorry.

How did you miss that scene? It was like three minutes long, lots of pulling back to his scrunched face, and then finally reaching for the sponge they’d put on Del’s head a few days later.

My friend this is the Achewood comments section, what ever do you mean, this is wonderful [pencils John Waters mustache onto upper lip]

Plus, your very name elicits delight

Teodor don't flop your leg like that Jesus Christ boy

ray is standing on it

That's a surprisingly competent Popeye. BTW, Randy Milholland took over the Sunday Popeye strip a few years back and it is...Good? Enjoyable? Yes, both. Neat to see another early to the internet sort have that level of pulpit.

Achewood

he don't got no sense of leg

I now have a tab open to explore this Popeye situation. I have enjoyed the new Nancy as done by the mysterious woman.

Okay, I'm going to level with you: it has been over 20 years since I last saw The Green Mile, so for all I know the scene you describe was in it.

It's kinda funny that the artistic flourishing that happened in the first few waves of webcomics is now being used to prop up legacy properties that were around when "Boston Brahmin" was a still a recognized socio-political class.

Wonderful imagery comes to mind while trying to reconcile "hung like a pool noodle" with "hung like a horse."

The Good Poster

it's true that ray would be the wrong character for this vignette, but it's nice that he seems to be enjoying exercise so much. i imagine him saying something that shouldn't work psychologically ("just imagine you're sweaty and achey 'cause you're getting your Bone on!"), and then getting my equilibrium back when we check back with him in a week and indeed it didn't work ("i imagined a nice hazelnut-crusty steelhead and my body brought my imagination to life").

Years ago when I was at a local flea market, a seller whose "store" was all toys had a display of Chick Tracts. Hah! I'd always seen them online but never in person, how novel! I took one, because how could I not. It wasn't until later I realized those were on sale and I had stolen it. Surely something like this isn't actually sold, and is just given away to try to convert the masses! No guilt was found.
