The gang hasn't been to Germany in twenty-one years! It seems a shame not to give this cotyledon a shot at budding. The last time Todd's plane landed in the Vaterland, Ray drank fingernail schnapps in a pile of garbage with a friendly Scorpions fan named Rudy, dressed in a newspaper suit, and invented a potato that never ran out of energy. The hangover must have been truly indecent, but Ray was probably getting liposomal glutathione IVs decades before Instagram started firehosing me with ads for them. With what products and services have you noticed the algorithm suddenly trying to suffocate you?

Achewood

Chums! I’ve been abroad for two weeks, and taking longer than I like to get caught up with you in the post comments — the old back-and-forth I truly enjoy — though I’m pretty well current now. This is a quick note to say that I’ll be airborne over the North Atlantic until Evening PDT and only spottily live in the comments when this week’s strip posts, but I will be catching up with you more thoroughly over the weekend. And if you haven’t been in there chatting, Get Involved, Innit, it’s a good time and actually breaches the parasocial hide of the beast! For those in the Author’s Tier, the photo-heavy entries you’ve been enjoying about Lyon will continue on through Toulouse, Barcelona, and the host of injuries to dignity which dog every benighted victim of the jet travel system. My notes are piled like Swiss in a stormy deli, nearly ready for your delite.

Josh Egbert

Uh oh. This has a hint of Jaime the Science Friend.

Jarret Cooper

Also mention something about the carrot

jordan b.

ha, I was just about to say the same thing.

Shepton

Has it really been 21 years since that time Ray smelled like farted-in vinegar

Achewood

It’s a pretty small amount.

Bruce Wright

“Animal Germany” raises so many questions.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Custom haircare, nail treatments, anti-aging skincare, makeup for an aging face. They know. And they're right. The font the leader of Animal Germany writes in makes me realize I need stronger reading glasses.

Achewood

It is to be Egbert Der Forschungfreund. I didn’t want to tell you until now.

Rob Dalton

the algo’s on a ‘gentle masculinity’ kick—keeps recommending linen pants, emotional literacy, and beard oils that smell like regret.

Achewood

The strip about schnapps can drink now

Achewood

VEEEWE schallll ZEEEEEEEING!

Kiaayo

The leader of Animal Germany, Friedrich Merz But A Cat

Shepton

Now that strip can itself end up smelling like farted-in vinegar and it will have all come full circle

Achewood

No golf clips or Joe Rogan republican coffee at all?! Dang, there must be at least two internets.

Josh Egbert

My surnames origins being the Germanic word for "Bright Edge", this is all starting to sound like pickles on my parade

Tom P

Ray's genial ability to ride the quantum froth of the race empyrean just might save this nation

Achewood

Do a couple searches for rucking and leather bolero hats. Try to game it back to center.

Achewood

Cycle of life, complete, etc

Achewood

🎶he’s Frieeeeder, the Leeeeader🎶

Ryan Boyle

Is it canon that Lyle can style hair? Or just so in character that we look past it?

Achewood

Dude bomb-diggity use of empyrean

Achewood

There are several canon instances, yes. I can’t look them up right now because I’m above Greenland. And also, it gives him and pat something to Ultimate Showdown about.

b.zap

pommes oder brot

Henri

And strip

Achewood

That question fucked me up IRL at a currywurst cart under the zoo station train back then. The cat in that strip looks exactly like the guy I frustrated.

Traedran

Roast Beef and Molly's blogs both feature Lyle cutting hair, as does the time he shampooed Teodor at the SaniTaco! stand.

Achewood

Alright friends in the trinity — m’lord, m’lady, and m’expiring-WiFi-pass — I’m signing off for today, but I’ll see you on the other side … the other side of FRIDAY

Rob Dalton

boy a typo or two could really send that query down the wrong hole. so to speak.

Daniel M Ford

I don't want to give in to recency bias, but this strip might feature the greatest line of Lyle Dialogue ever.

Achewood

Leather ballsack cinches is a hell of a typo, dude, but I’m here for it

Henri

My worst currywurst experience was someone eating my currywurst straight out of the trash can seconds after its disposal. This lead to us as a family fighting amongst ourselves about who was being sensitive in the correct dimension of sensitivity and who was not. And surprisingly, the factions didn’t follow previously established positions on correctness. My kids reported afterwards that Berlin had been the best trip.

Tom Morris

The algorithm encourages me to get into teaching and medicinal weed

Jaimeson Birse

Dragon Ball Z inspired workout programs, water-driven jetpack "experiences", and of course medication ads for conditions I cannot have exclusively in Spanish. Duolingo seems to be protecting me in a way that I can't understand.

Song Club with John Krane

It is, as the kids say, a major "lore drop." I don't know if that's actually what they say, it just seems like it might be.

Bruce Wright

on the Algo topic, a few years ago I ordered a replacement hinge for a kitchen cabinet, and for the next three weeks the Internet thought I was hinge –mad. Popped up everywhere. I started worrying that I didn’t have enough hinges.

Jay Y

Beef and Teodor were visited by the Hangover Ham in that instance. I don't know if the emergency Denny's was ever found, but a friend of mine travels a lot and is so particular about what he will or will not eat that he once ran away screaming from a quesadilla because it had vegetables in it. If he can survive abroad, I think there's hope for emergency Denny's or its equivalent (is that pancake house really international?)

Jay Y

We'll call these spuds, "apples of the earth" in a way that I'm sure will never confuse anyone.

Jay Y

I had that happen in the old times when a friend shared that he was excited about a purchase he made on Amazon (hand push mower, in a weird riff on today's comic) and for the next year, they were trying hawk me all kinds of lawn care tools because I clicked something once and was suddenly a Lawn Guy. Algorithms are idiotic in that way because they run wild knowing THAT you clicked something, but never WHY.

Distant Egg Song

Nothing good has ever come of that font. It's the ascending dissonant string line of fonts. Or, perhaps more fittingly, the minor-keyed march of fonts.

Nicholas Williams

The algorithm thinks that I like the following things, in the following order. 1. Shark encounters 2. Rude titties 3. Weed 4. Antifa It has got me dead to rights.

Jenn

Wasn't that where Philippe waited all day for a bike to jump a car? We're still hoping

Achewood

Thank you. But there was also the time he told Téodor to eat piss.

Achewood

Thank you! That is always my main goal, despite all the other nonsense.

Achewood

Did I have you for periods 1-7 of…high school?

Achewood

This is an entire short story in a comment. I’m a fan.

John Ryan

I'm wrong about this but isn't "Animal Germany" a Wilco song?

Ben Wilinofsky

The algorithm seems to be convinced I am rich. I get a lot of cars and watches, but one glorious time, it tried to sell me a genuine, no-bullshit, seven-figure stegasaurus skeleton

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Become a lady our age who still wants to look pretty.

kdusjjdhxksj

I feel like this is an unacknowledged flaw that wastes at least millions of dollars each year, maybe much more. They harvest so much data and people keep buying it so they can sell things with it, but they have no ability to tell when you've actually bought the mattress, so they just keep paying to hammer you with targeted ads for the things you need least in the world.

kdusjjdhxksj

Tiktok makes many attempts to sell me golf clubs, modern country music, and just sort of christianity and right wing politics as concepts. I have never expressed any love for any of these things, so theres a real sense of "well maybe today you'll feel differently" about it.

Bruce Wright

You’re not a mattress collector, then?

Andrew Gillies

My algorithm seems fairly convinced that I'm autistic. I say that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is just really well written.

GruntyGinMan

Legitimately introduced my wife to Star Trek with Duet. She had seen a few movies growing up but none of the shows and it was so well written even knowing nothing about it she was instantly taken

GruntyGinMan

Mine is rude titties, guns, Antifa, public lands, and deranged expositions of Ed Abbey and damn they got me.

cody

Entire airplanes. What the fuck.

Andrew Gillies

Well if you can get also your wife into Judge Dredd, obsolete computers and technical esoterica about film and television standards, then I guess I'm just a regular ass dude

Traedran

Okay, I'm not alone in fearing that. Good.

J. Alex

Wait a minute...what exactly is that hair?

2scrogz

I work in the ads industry, and let me tell you, almost nobody actually in control of the ungodly sums of money dedicated to marketing budgets has any idea what they are doing or how the underlying technology works. The stereotypical entry-level agency media buyer is a twenty-something fresh out of college with a degree in "Communications" who is the niece/nephew of the VP of Strategic Partnerships at that agency, or some-such bullshit. Furthermore, the industry is rife with shady targeting-data-brokers selling the most insane combinations of demographic and behavioral data, much of it contradictory or flat-out incorrect. The apparatus that underpins and primarily funds the free-to-use internet is incredibly complex and interconnected, but nobody is doing anything good with it. The incompetent use it in pursuit of greed, the more competent use it in pursuit of power. In conclusion, I strongly recommend the usage of Ad-blocking programs.

Clench and Cheese

Man this takes me back. The German script is all you need.

Achewood

Man now these are the juicy jams I’m talking about. What’s good ad block software, and does it get all the problems away? I was in Western Europe for two weeks and I had to accept a term sheet for every fucking site I went to and it drove me nuts. Is there a way to just “reject as much as possible and open the fucking page” automatically?

Andrew Gillies

Aah I see that we're acknowledging the fact that Achewood takes place in a parallell animal society this week

A. Hamster

But piss is a beverage, unless someone made piss gelée

S. J. Sulzer

is the title of the strip lying, and this is actually the first time we've seen spicey grampa, or am I a stressed-out doofus who cannot remember things i have previously seen?

Gryffyd Dempsey

I must say I'm looking forward to seeing how Karl's been getting along.

Taylor

Is Ray especially knowledgeable about the state of German manscaping in particular or does he just keep up to date on worldwide crotch hair styling in general?

b.zap

Now that I think about it, verbs are kind of a dick

Jackaroony

Chris you toe the "making me Google stuff that I know won't exist" line really well. Liposomal glutathione IV, indeed

Achewood

It comes and goes. Usually the distinction isn't necessary, but it's fun to toe with here and there. I forget how many holes I've blown in this conceit over the years.

Achewood

I think he was in a strip just prior, in a final panel. I'm installing some baseboard heaters in an old warship at the moment and wifi is poor or I'd check.

Achewood

Karl passed in 2014. Kidney stuff. I'm sorry I didn't announce it.

Achewood

Like most of us, he's probably extrapolating from a general awareness of this meticulous culture.

Achewood

To the back, verbs. Thanks to context, we barely need you.

Achewood

Right. Not like an elected official or anything. He's just a straight-up leader.

Achewood

Well, I know the liposomal glutathione part is real, because it's all I see ads for. That, and flying to Turkey to get more hair stapled on.

Andrew Gillies

I heard someone describe the continuity in Achewood as being "like Star Wars if there are sometimes Jedi and sometimes not".

Achewood

That's interesting — what does the Jedi concept map onto, in Achewood?

Andrew Gillies

I think it was more of a way to illustrate how you are willing to throw out major pieces of world building when it serves the story, rather than comparing any particular element to the Jedi. It was on a podcast called Brain Tape. They went through the Great Outdoor Fight and the one where Phillipe tries to find the couch, but are now seemingly defunct.

Achewood

Ah, thanks. It's been a long three decades, and I do believe this is something I've done here and there. Which examples of universe rule-set disregard come readily to mind? Trying to keep all of it straight after the first frenetic ten or so years as a one-man-band definitely took a toll on me, and was a big factor in the burnout(s).

Andrew Gillies

Well I think the main one is switching between them living in a parallell society or just regular old Palo Alto, but I also remember that in early strips they had to be very furtive about driving while nowadays Ray is tooling around in his Escalade without a care in the world.
