This got me thinking that a live, regular Achewood Trivia session — with prizes, a boxed juice sponsor, and camaraderie — would be a hoot. What's a good platform for such an event, where people don't have to create some complicated two-factor-authentication account, and older users don't have to figure out what Discord is?

Many years ago I regularly attended bar trivia night at a townie dive called Spud Monkey's, out east on the border between Portland and the despairing tracts of Gresham. (I wasn't drinking at the time, but my girlfriend of that era certainly made me wish I was.) Spud Monkey's specialized in loaded baked potatoes, dirty tots, and the limp variety of fresh-cut fries that remind you of a lifetime smoker's upper lip. The Trivia Master, a nice younger fellow whose name I forget, turned out to be an Achewood fan, which made me feel pretty cool. He drove a very old yellow Volvo station wagon. I hope he's okay now. Spud Monkey's isn't okay: they closed a few years ago, but the real miracle was that they were ever open in the first place.

Also, how'd you do?

I think this is an amazing idea. I'd love achewood trivia nights. I'd be happy to volunteer as a mod or something if help is needed.

Achewood

Great! I'll gauge momentum, and try to find an easy platform.

Steamed_Grahams

Trivia would be a good way to safely siphon off Achewood facts from my brain, so that they don't affect my friends, family, and coworkers.

Achewood

I was thinking, there's a lot of pent-up knowledge that is nigh-on unuseful in the rest of life, so there should be a place its value is celebrated

Achewood

I think good trivia masters graduate the difficulty of the questions as the session goes on. E.g., this could have started with "What is Philippe standing on," and end with "Recite the eight secondary stations of the lash of Thanatos"

Clench and Cheese

Goddamn Dogg deep cuts from the Volvo of Despair. Best not get storta stoned before trying this out, or the party will suck when the other webcomics show up. Nice Pete will put you in his Hip-Hobbit band and many hands will hold the knife. (mic drop)

Consolation question: Whose limo can pop a wheelie, according to Philippe?

Achewood

Who was Antonyne's mute nemesis

Charles Richter

"I'll take 'Bonus Zone' for one thousand, Alex." "Closing out the category: 'Sanskrit'" [flop sweat, proficiently]

b.zap

Is this an open book test?

b.zap

Will there be sides?

Bruce Wright

I wish my memory wasn't a thing of scraps and tatters

Achewood

"What word never appears in the Achewood comics, Ken?"

Achewood

Maybe get your calciums checked? A calcium is probably blocking the memories.

Achewood

No, but you can use a calculator.

Bruce Wright

You probably have calciums too. At least I confronted mine. And go forth, burdened with the knowledge of inevitable doom

Achewood

I have a 1953 La Crosse Ladies' Soroptimist cookbook with a recipe for "string bean banana casserole with cream mushroom gravy and French-fried onion topping." There's also a recipe that says you can make a steak out of an orange, but I haven't tried it yet.

Bungus Bronbo

Ah, Proper Nouns. My One True Weakness. I said "Bono" instead of "Bono's Butler," so I got 0/11.

Achewood

But isn't Bungus Bronbo middle-Paleolithic for "Bono's Butler"?

By my calculations we are a week and a half away from the 20th anniversary of GoF

Walter Biggins

That plate of food from Spud Monkey’s looks like Rick Ross’s last enema

Conor Nelson

Me, before the first question is even finished: "DOG PENIS MEDICINE!!!"

John Robinson

I am an experienced bar trivia host/editor of questions, and am happy to volunteer my services in whatever manner would be useful to this noble cause.

Achewood

Little bowl of scallions by the toilet, for garnish

Conor Nelson

omg crap I was not prepared for this. oh god. Like... Smuckles?

Conor Nelson

ahhhh... agh. Was going to say Butters or something. My wires are crossed.

Conor Nelson

Smuckles! What was I thinking. Well.. maybe I can MC

Achewood

Ricky! Thank you OI. Mr Nelson, Smuckles was not involved in that strip, but you can redeem yourself by naming the angry construction worker guy who bought the DPM sandwich from Téodor.

Mina Roller

I only got Lonis Edison. 😞 Can't believe i forgot Pat's street address - i love the maps. Time to go back through from the beginning

Achewood

The way that was worded, I actually had to check to see if RR had passed

Achewood

I battle the calciums with frequent urination, to get them out

Achewood

Good lord, oh my, uh…I had better prepare this GOF anniversary coffee table book on the double

Achewood

What was the name of the east-west bridge?

Conor Nelson

Crap, I dunno, but I know the jar went to a rick cousin in Alabama who collects things like that.

Mina Roller

Hmmm J Vincent J Lemoni Bridge? 😆

Conor Nelson

YES! That was the name I thought I was saying when I said Smuckles. Ok I'm not totally crazy.

Achewood

I think it’s the Old Public Bridge, but ol JVJ Lemoni is always a great guess down there

I still have my hardcopy with a drawing of Beef in it

Nicholas Williams

I hosted trivia at the lovable shithole of a bar that I used to own every Tuesday night for four years, and then for another four years after I stopped owning it. I had fun. I sat on the bar top and riffed and shot the shit and drank Blanton's from a large crystal tumbler that was mine and mine alone. Very "Greg Davies goes to where all the gay punks drink." I had to stop when I had a child and "multiple bourbons on a Tuesday" was no longer a thing that could ever happen again. Anyway, I got all that shit right except for Pat's address, and I would love to help out with an Achewood trivia "thang."

Achewood

You recited the entire phrase about the French from memory.

Nicholas Williams

No, in my hubris I read the question wrong and said Ray's response about hitting the ball between some tits but sadder, and now I have to come here and admit to everyone that I fucked up.

Nicholas Williams

That means more than you know. I was…so excited that I knew about the sad French tits. (snif)

Anthony Thompson

“Unbelievable Chocolate Mousse” still reliable as a method to induce chuckles.

Achewood

I don’t even remember the French tits one

C C

I need to turn in all my Achewood cred right now. I recognized every question but my poor brain, damaged as it is with a life of bad decisions, let me down. I will say as trivia questions these are top notch and now I have to spend some time researching answers to these questions about imaginary bears and cats plus justify this to my spouse and employers.

Oppido

Three out of eleven, dang. And here I've been calling myself a Chochacho. I like to imagine Snake Mike penning an edition of Crud Doubler at Spud Monkey's.

Achewood

To be fair, some of these were aggressively impossible

Achewood

And to increase one’s shadow the next day! Oh my!

Achewood

I would have gotten about four of these if I hadn’t written them directly from strips

Anthony Thompson

Oh! Almost forgot; would LOVE to see Scripture Cake recipes in a trivia context! Well, I guess I’m running out of room here, gotta sign off now, ttyl

FactWino

Pffffff, Ken.

The secret is crushed up Ritz crackers.
