Man, I had the craziest thought today! But wait—first of all, do non-Americans know about Amish? Here’s the crash-n-dirty: Amish are like a time capsule of America, but not one you’d open. The dudes all got children’s-musical bowl cuts and neckbeards, and they get whupped but cherry red if they so much as hoist a leg over some thought-stealin’ bicycle. They got no power lines, and supper is mashed potatoes and milk, every time. Want to use a horse for everything? Great, here’s your haircut. Want information? Have fun usin’ electricity with Satan, ’cause you are kicked out.

Of course, there’s a lot to admire about ’em, too. First of all, their kids can’t be a dick to you when you get so lost in your thoughts you cut the cheese at Starbucks. (Film trivia: this was the original opening scene of Witness.) And their worldview is bananas-righteous! Check this out: “Jesus is first, you are last, and others are in between.” Don’t that sound exactly like some salt-raisin diner waitress in deep Tennessee, droppin’ wisdom that’s been brewin’ in the hills like a fine cask likker?

Notice how I didn’t mention the Amish betties up there? I was savin’ the best for last! Man, I was at Mickey D’s this afternoon—droppin’ in for a McFlurry and a salad shaker apres-sauna—and damn but right in front of me were these two Amish babes! They had the bonnets, the fabric-ass nerd dresses, those black nurse-type loafers, the whole nine yards. And they seemed so interested in everything! Man, but they were bright-eyed even to just see fonts! They literally pointed out fonts. I’m glad T wasn’t there or he would have fucked that whole sitch up like a flamethrower at a balloon bouquet.

Anyhow, it made me reflect on Tina—I know, I know, Papa Pung says you can’t pick flowers where the sun don’t shine—but this was in service of the good. She was always so dead-eyed at anything she didn’t already know about, which was maybe seven things, so there was a whole lotta dead-eye. Man, had I gotten used to the idea of a partner just bein’ a total energy suck! But these Amish betties, it was like all that clean livin’ and good thinkin’ kept their souls pure and zingy!

“Ray, you are a fool, you are a cornmeal-battered, state-fair-ribbonin’ horn DOG and they are 100% the least horndog culture on earth.” Yeah, you’re right. And Grok just told me they don’t trim that grim (it just came right out and said that, I hadn’t even typed anything or hit Return) so it’d be like massive culture shock on many fronts. Maybe that I even worry about that says I don’t deserve a Godly woman. But dang, imagine comin’ home after a hard day of honest yard stuff (in my case, maybe some Buffalo Soldier on the rider mower) and there’s flaky chicken pot pie and iced tea all crankin’ on the supper table! I take off my big straw hat, smooth down my long neckbeard, and gruffle. Later, we have nineteen children.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m just hungry. Thinkin’ I’ll do a Full Amish tonight: ’Dash some pot pies and mash from the deli counter, Szechuan green beans, and get Papa P on the FaceTime so we can keep restorin’ my grace.

The Amish make bitchin’ hams, though

Josh Egbert

I often mistake horniness for hunger.

Mina Roller

I need an appointment with Papa Pung

Achewood

He's pretty basic, but so are Ray's problems.

Josh Egbert

His whole thing is he doesnt take challenging clients

Achewood

They are a people I largely know through time lapse videos of barn raising.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Tina's lack of intellectual curiosity saddens me. Also, re Amish - inbreeding and once a week baths on top of the heartiest starchiest food. Ray idealizes what does not want to be idealized. Source: Frequent interactions with a few Amish communities in WI. They drive their horsey buggies to Walmart on a Saturday. I am not joking.

Omurice

You can’t be from Ohio and in the healthcare field without knowing about the incredible array of inherited conditions the Amish have, Ray’s nineteen children would have a salutary effect on the gene pool but he’d be seeing some things not even Grok could prepare him for.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Fresh and farmy. Probably raw. I have never tried it. Good jam though. Ever have crabapple or rose hip jam? Good stuff.

Asherdan

Ray makes the best situationally suggested food pivots this guy has seen.

Achewood

Amish food may lack glizz and sparkle, but who among us does not like a hot, flaky pot pie

Douglas Wykstra

This makes me feel like Ray would be especially susceptible to TradWife content. Either that, or in the space of half a blog post he successfully sublimated what for some is a years-long obsession, much in the way he might accidentally polish off a fifth of Blanton's in an afternoon.

Achewood

Please say more, this is fascinating

Achewood

I opened up Twitter and half the feed was dudes using grok to undress pictures of ladies

Achewood

I suspect a lot of dudes hope a tradwife will secretly be freaky-deeky, thus allowing them to achieve their fantasy of gettin' rutty with Phyllis Schlafly

Achewood

I think amish cheese is the grail of our next WI trip. I haven't been to house on the rock in like four years.

Achewood

nevermind, found it Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD)

The gradual Amish Exodus as farmland in Pennsylvania Dutch territory has become ruinously expensive is an under-reported sociological phenomenon. The San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, where I lived for a while, has a noticeable blend of Amish and Mennonites mixed in with the usual rural-Southwest demographic spread. The Wal-Mart doesn't quite have buggy parking, but you get used to giving them space on the shoulder.

Sedric and Charlie

As I recall Microsoft-canon Téodor fantasied about this very thing in his very first embarrassing fuckup in front of the boss

Nate

The dark secrets of the amish compel me to speak out against them every time I see them. They are not what they seem! Things are *not okay* on those farms but they are so insulated that getting info out of them is like squeezing a Made Man and expecting him to rat out his Don. Talk to the cops? Get shunned, become homeless, lose everyone you've ever known. It's bad stuff! They also got the most bullshit loopholes these days to do the dance of "I'm not really using tech" but definitely actively using tech (or in some cases just hiring workers to use the tech for them which is just sin by proxy isn't it?) I could go on and on about those Amish. Amish!!!! (yelled in the style of "Khan" with much fist waving). Anyways we got a lot of amish strongholds out here in Pennsylvania

GruntyGinMan

I got with a Mennonite. It was pretty good, to be honest. Like, really good. She was basically living two lives(Mennonite and not) and she ended it because she wasn't feeling it, which of course is fine. Also I think because I took her to a haunted mansion and when the Leatherface-looking guy popped out I ran faster than I had ever since I was in the military. I proved myself a coward who would desert a a lapsed Mennonite. Anyway about a year back the Moth Ma'am and I are at a local Pride event and ran into the ex, she's doing good! Completely out of the community now, although apparently her cousins and brothers were like "oh no, that's terrible! So, like, your fiancé has a big screen TV right? Awful that you are making leaving the church official! Does he like wrestling? Does he watch it? Does he like pizza or popcorn! Yes, terrible, terrible that you are leaving! We are asking to come over and watch wrestling."

Nicholas Williams

Now how would anyone know that, let alone Grok, who doesn't know shit.

Nicholas Williams

They might use, like, wool shears, and it might straight up be a *thing.*

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Dodge, Columbia, Portage, Wood, and Marathon counties in WI are where I have encountered them and the road signs about buggies on the roads. There are probably more Amish and other such groups all over the state. Fairly low cost of living, still a lot of open arable land, but harsh yo-yo weather that is becoming more extreme as time goes on. Not the worst place to relocate to should you want to be about that life.

Douglas Wykstra

It does seem like non-standard Grok behavior. Either Ray has a premium version unknown to us mortals, or his version of Grok has been infiltrated by some type of... habitually dishonest robot, and he hasn't noticed because that's basically what Grok is anyway.

Linus Mixson

Depilation is seen as an act of vanity by the Amish, or so it seems on the basis of admittedly, but unanimous, evidence. (The men, obviously, don't shave their faces — and as above, apparently, so below.) Also, it's well-established that Amish women eschew leg shaving, and as it seems somewhat implausible that the particular 17th-c. Bernese mores they strive to preserve encouraged women to adopt the "wool stockings" look, it's tough to avoid the conclusion that genital shaving would be seen as unappetizingly "modern" on its face.

Spyguitar

A college roommate grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch country, and turns out there was a huge problem with ~~Amish~~ (dammit, not Amish, Pennsylvania Dutch, but probably similar problems occur) dudes buggying over to the local, getting absolutely hammered, then trusting the horse to get them home... only horses don't know to stop at red lights so a lot of buggies got t-boned

Omurice

And look at founders effect, there are a plethora of genetic conditions arising from generations of inbreeding. Researchers have been able to identify so many anomalies, including just last year a rare form of neuroinflammatory disease.

FactWino

What about a modest trim around the edges?

2scrogz

Ray ultimately realizes that he really just wants some chicken pot pie, not some incredibly unlikely Amish hookup. With the help of a *therapy moment* he has just enough self-awareness to understand that his fantasy is far from reality. Good on the guy for tending to his mental health - but he really should get Papa Pung to help him watch his carbs. Pot Pies and other heavy "country" foods being to diabetes what a nail is to a hammer, and all that.

Achewood

There is a famous idea of Atlas, carrying the world on his shoulders. There is a famous idea of Ray, holding his belly, which is full of diabetes :(

C C

Dude, you had me at neuroinflammatory disease. Now I have to chase the rabbits out of that hole!

Walter Biggins

And, as a man now living in Philly and encountering Amish & Pennsylvania Dutch food on the regular (maybe too regular, diabetes-comment duly noted), Amish baked goods are so lusciously delicious that consuming them is pretty much straight sinning.

Achewood

I wonder what their edict is about not using shitty American glyphosate flour and processed sugar. Maybe that helps.

Achewood

What do we think the law is on DUI if the horse is the one doing the work? Can the horse be hammered if the farmer is sober? Lots of precedent to review here.
