As you have probably guessed, packing hundreds of t-shirts this week had me musing on what it means to wear a certain t-shirt. Is it for you, or is it for others? What are you advertising about yourself with the printed decoration? The answer is, I suspect, subjective, but at the root is an expression of identity and values, which affirms the self, but also provides a shorthand which enables potential molecular pair-bonding with another member of your rarefied tribe. A t-shirt says what our face cannot, especially if we wear a heavy beard. It is hard for me to imagine someone in an Achewood shirt seeing a stranger at the airport, also in an Achewood shirt, and not offering a delighted "hello." Have you ever come across a stranger in an Achewood shirt, out there in the wild?

John Kenda

Yes. U of Iowa, 2005. I am the instructor for stats 101. First day, kid comes in wearing the equasion of the week tshirt.

blair

Does that mean this is the real Peel-Out Summer?

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

I have not seen any Achewood tees out in the wild, nor any of the actual band shirts I regularly wear. The place I live is full of women wearing pastel sweatshirts with lace collars and USA quilted on them in flag pattern with 6 kids and guys of all ages who wear hi-vis yellow and orange even when they don't have to. The people at my dad's memory care facility like the Kindness Club one.

Bruce Wright

My tees mostly feature Lovecraft and obscure East European settings

Daniel Burt

I can't remember a time before Skittles... Only a time when they had to change the Skittles recipe for sending kids irregular.

jordan b.

almost all of my graphic Ts are Achewood-sourced. I am that stranger out there in the wild.

John Feilmeier

i always give a dorky "hey nice sandals!" when i see another fella in bedrocks

Bungus Bronbo

"I GOT ESTEEM" and "Sixteen ounces of GET LOST". I can completely believe the shirt in the backyard has haunted Beef for decades. I'm taking it as at least semi canon that he did scrabble it out the dirt and tear it in half. The landing pose feels like the moment that humanizes the growth and makes the strip. Good for Beef.

Nicholas Williams

Who is that dangerous fuck, god if anyone ever said that about me I would blush my cute little butt off.

Achewood

I am at a pool party so I will check in with you Chos TONIGHT!

Asherdan

I carry a sad sad scorecard of what I've worn that people have recognized...The Aquabats! 3 - Achewood 0

Asherdan

One of The Aquabats! recognizers was Eaglebones Falconhawk and FUCK YOU MA I'M COUNTING IT ANYWAYS!

Ian Tucker

I bought my cousin the rabbit ambulance shirt around twenty years back. I don't think she'd read Achewood, but she raised rabbits and was starting out in a medical career, so it felt apropos. It's still a very good design.

Never met another in an Achewood shirt but once after a long journey of international dimensions I was in the customs line wearing a Venture Bros shirt and drew alongside a fellow in the parallel cattle chute wearing one too and I pointed in my jetlagged way and said “You, me! Same same!” And he gave a thumbs up and said “YESSS”

I've seen a few Achewood shirts in the wild. Two I remember for sure are a couple years ago I saw a guy on the JoCo Cruise in one. I was at an art show a decade or so ago and saw an "I'm the guy who sucks" shirt. Both times I complimented the shirt. And of course there was a gathering of DC-area Ache-heads back in 2005 or so but we all wore Achewood shirts on purpose so I don't count that.

I have gotten reactions from fellow Chos to my Achewood shirts twice. Once was a guy at a post-writing convention social event and as he was newly graduated from the fanciest workshop in our field he had to let me know about how he HAD liked Achewood BUT. The second time I got a little Chochacho discount at the nerd store for nerd stuff here because the proprietor was so excited by my Dude&Catastrophe shirt. And he was similarly pumped when I came in to tell him about the Patreon a little later

Max Crowe

My alma mater! But I graduated in 2003 and was not yet aware of Achewood, to my detriment

Max Crowe

There is an embarrassment of riches in these outtakes. I'm gonna be ruminating on "dude is knuckles with a man attached" for some time

Achewood

This is maybe the best achewood shirt story I have heard. Let me guess...the kid went on to...drop out / bomb the final

Achewood

oh shit is that what I am smelling from three blocks over

Achewood

It's always good to let the people know that they can't know you.

Achewood

This is a good man right here people

Achewood

I have been to suburban Wisconsin many times people and this woman does not embroider the truth

Achewood

oh yeah wasn't there a whole thing with the food dyes giving kids club leg and stuff

Achewood

is it bad I think those look ok for technical sandals

Achewood

It's like that beating heart in the Edgar Allan poe story of similar name. He hears it out under the dirt, "you...are...so...arrogaaaaaaantttt-t-t-t-t-ttttt"

Achewood

All driving a Honda Fit with the gas pump hose trailing

Achewood

It was a good pool party, I partied with some food in my stomach

Achewood

When you get to the letter B, I hear that Batman shirts are pretty popular.

Achewood

I genuinely appreciate the art being enjoyed in this entirely unrelated context.

Achewood

Nice. There was a moment when this country just might have made it. That was it.

Achewood

Okay, I have just looked up JoCo Cruise and am now considering an AcheCruise, where the buffet is all chicken recipes and the only activity is a zip line between two guys' rooms (you have to lift your knees or you're just walking)

Achewood

Haha ok now you have to tell me how achewood disappointed this extremely fancy guy I like to think the nerd store incident more than makes up for some guy who ultimately found achewood "problematic"

Achewood

Whenever I dap someone with a knuckle-bump I say, "hit me with them soup bones"

Daniel Burt

There were "the Southampton six" which a 2010 EU law basically insisted that they either removed these 6 weapons grade food additives, or they'd have to put a disclaimer on that Skittles basically caused hyperactivity. The health of the nation was marginally improved, but at what cost...

Nicholas Williams

I immediately plow into a Jersey Mike’s and start to cry.

Daniel M Ford

If he told me specifics I didn’t listen. It was insufficiently artsy/woke for a graduate of the mighty Clarion Workshop I guess. Haven’t heard a thing about the guy since!

Bruce Wright

“Ask me about Shub-Niggurath”

Daniel M Ford

And yes the nerd store interaction certainly more than makes up for it!

John Kenda

Nah, he did ok. Showed up, had done the work, which was not the MO of many of his classmates

Matt Mitchell

Not many stories per se, but I tend to work with and encounter a lot of creative folk or folks seeking out “creatives”. The rabbit ambulance one seems to excite people the most, my mom just last week being the most recent one. Once walking around Brooklyn wearing Stoned Lightning a dude told me “hey Stoned Lightning I got that good shit”. Otherwise I try to wear “Our Every Move is the New Tradition” on gigs in the summer. Besides that I also have a few Guided By Voices shirts and many death metal shirts.

Achewood rabbit ambulance button on a Barnes and Noble employee at the mall nearest my house!
