In this penultimate installment of the Return to Achewood arc, we take a brief moment to show appreciation for the genius of Max Fleischer. If you were, like our special guest, born in the 1920s, there may have been no contemporary art more unsettling to you than his "jazz cigarette" approach to character design and kinetics. Here we see Lie Bot's continuing propensity to stir up trouble by flickering into disguise — this time as B. Boop. Other things happen, as well.

Rotting Old Bear.

There is a LOT to unpack here but those last four panels on their own are magical.

Success!

Max's genius on the business side. He was an asshole who enjoyed suing people (such as Helen Kane, who was the visual and audio model for Betty Boop. Max fired her and took her voice, just like what happened to John K with Ren & Stimpy). He also made a ton of bad decisions like "let's animate Gulliver's Travels!" His brother Dave was a genius, and a super nice guy who brought Superman (then a brand new comic book hero) to the movies for an astonishing million 1940 bucks an episode. The real hero of Fleischer Studios is Grim Natwick, who drew and animated Betty Boop. Like fellow pioneer Ub Iwerks (who drew and animated Disney's Oswald the Rabbit and the now-seen-on-pornhub Steamboat Mickey), his contribution is all but forgotten. This strip reminds me of Windsor McKay, actually. I dig it.

Holy Moly. *now* Achewood is fully back.

Lyle pukes so hard it makes a bear's soul go three feet

Omurice

Let’s see, count the number of complexes on the rhythm strip, then multiply by six and….the bear’s dead before I can figure it out. Damn, rusty skills.

Tom Morris

I did not understand this one

Teodor and Lyle certainly have their differences, but they have at least one thing in common: the willingness to visit well-deserved violence upon Lie Bot.

Ha! I told you it's Lie Bot! It's so good to see you! How's things going man. you still spending your time hustling sub's?

Matt Amis

damn pooh is really up the creek right now

Dara K. Marzipan

Love that poor Pooh gets to Achewood and then dies within 7 comics. Feels right.

Joshua Nadas

Man I love me some jazz cigarettes

Finbar Clougherty

Have Lie Bot’s eyes always looked like that? It occurs to me we’ve never seen him sans sunglasses

Oppido

If Lyle had just agreed to get high with T, maybe they could've had a nice, mellow evening and Pooh would still be with us. Always burn the bush, kids.

Needing to know what of Picasso's the heartburn compares to is going to keep me up nights, I can just tell

the magical realism we crave

Liebot killed winnie the pooh with... the truth?

Douglas Wykstra

The degree of personal humiliation and probable data piracy that Lie Bot just visited on Teodor (remember what was happening before Pooh walked into the room) is earth-shattering, which you can tell because Teodor was moved to call out the central joke of Lie Bot (his unexplained continued existence in the lives and houses of characters who gain nothing positive by his presence).

Oh Lyle, my spirit animal, I too have had that heartburn and with the same result, and the same wretched noise
