In this harrowing but entirely relatable* short story, Roast Beef Kazenzakis and Téodor Orezscu discuss the former's recent attempt to drink caffeine at the gourmet grocery store.

Beef might enjoy a coarse French roast 8 hour cold brew. Least caffeine content and extraction without being chemically decaf and still recognizably coffee and able to be consumed rapidly if not on ice. And tangerine peel even more than other citrus is a potent mood booster so it makes sense he would gravitate to it. The confidence that emerged from this situation was well earned. YAY BEEF!

The story gave me a dopamine boost from seeing Beef making all kinds of good choices.

"Ain't eat milk from a bean" Beef's Boomer male role models really did him very few favors.

I almost hate knowing this but that little cardboard hand-protector has a special name other than sleeve; a zarf.

Téodor should have known this, I think less of him now.

What I love most about this is that it didn't end anywhere near where I thought it would. Two paragraphs in, I had it locked that Beef was going to completely spaz out on coffee, cue laugh track over a perfectly serviceable moment from a character with sensitivities. Instead, personal growth.

I often think that I have strange cares, and then Roast Beef reminds me that my cares could be stranger. Love that Beef doesn't clock when Téodor is totally roasting him.

“Is that what she ended up saying after you spoke?” We all have a friend who we need to speak to like this on occasion.
