Last week, NYTimes columnist Jamelle Bouie, one of the most brilliant and thoughtful commentators on American politics that we have, stopped by the pod to talk about the life and opinions of one Thomas Chatterton Williams, serial memoirist, anti-woke guy with three names, reactionary centrist who is definitely not a conservative (patent pending), and enterprising transcender of race. It was a fun, free-ranging and frank conversation -- so frank, in fact, that halfway through we all agreed that this one might need to be Patreon-only! So you're getting a BUNCH of premieres with this episode: our first guest on the Patreon, and the first ep initially intended for the main feed that we're deciding to release just for you, our Blessed Children™️!

Very intrigued by all the teasing that this is too intense for the main feed. 😂

William Knight

Hahahahaha I should have known who was talking about who.

In Bed With the Right

I hope it doesn't disappoint -- it's not super spicy, but there's a little inside baseball here that I would have likely cut if it had been main feed.

Allen

Oh hell yes!

Jon F

You said a well known columnist but this is better than I could have hoped.

Moira, you have nothing to fear. Unless you turn into a crappy person who's an avatar for some icky, multiply-blindspotted cultural cachet, and then, your better self should welcome a thorough dissection/critique or dunkfest. I think y'all's profiles of avatars are vital. These folks can have redemption by cutting it tf out. (Well, and doing some other stuff, too.)

Katie

I said exactly this out loud when I got the notification email!

TCW is a wonderful example of the "cultural corrolary" to Wilhoit's Law.

I appreciated Moira pointing out that, while media consumption can impact reality, plenty of young men listen to misogynistic music and don’t abuse their girlfriends. Interesting that Williams seems to be such an advocate for individual responsibility unless it’s taking accountability for his own mistreatment of women. It’s also wild to blame his abusive behavior on hip hop and then claim that reading classic literature changed him. So many of those novels are also full of misogyny and endorsements of violence against women! But I guess to recognize that would require him to acknowledge patriarchy exists.

Katie

I am the venn diagram of a (Canadian) listener who followed the Andrew Sullivan and Pamela Paul episodes but didn’t really know who TCW was- we do exist! So thank you for the bio details, I love when thinkers (or whatever we’re dealing with here) are put in context

RFB

Me too 🙂

In Bed With the Right

Yeah, TCW feels like a deeper cut than Sullivan, I think, though I'm having a hard time explaining why.!

Katie

I also didn’t really know who Andrew Sullivan was, but I would listen to you folks read the phone book! Anything you want to publish, I want to hear

Nina

I'm Brazilian and although I heard of TCW on many other episodes and had a general idea of who he was, I was totally unaware of the fact that he was black until now

Jamelle is always SO good, and I especially appreciate the point about this kind of reactionary’s rarified environs and lack of interaction with the far right people a lot of us have to deal with (*waves from the South*) but leave my em dashes alone!!!

Nina

I had to stop and finish listening to this episode later so I wanna add that wokeness did not, in fact, force latin languages to use the x, we have our own gender neutral constructions. Ex: "latine" is the currently used gender neutral form of latino/latina

The comment by Jamelle on the lack direct exposure of these types of pundits to the far right is notable. I live in a southern red state, a red city, a red county and am constantly exposed to confederate battle flags, and MAGA propaganda. The idea that some leftist teenager is the greatest threat to the United States is frankly idiotic. These people don’t know anything about the far right, they are not exposed to Christian conservative in any meaningful sense, they have no understanding of their fascist tendencies.

Thomas Chatterton Williams IS Shelby Steele.
