For this episode of In Bed with the Right, Adrian and Moira return to the year 1933. They continue the story of how Hitler seized power, what it did to society, what it felt like to live through it, and -- as always -- what role gender and sexuality played in events. Reminder: We're going month by month for these episodes. This sixth installment covers August 1 to August 31, 1933. Meaning: This is a summer episode. It finds many of the institutions the Nazis have subjugated on summer break, the ongoing processes of synchronization and Nazification either already completed or about to kick into high gear. So this is an episode about the little stuff, the summer things: what our bodies do as the institutions betray us, how external pressures create coalitions, but also open up fissures, how old identities disappear without anything quite ready to take their place. And of course: what happens to our sense of time at times of peril. It's an episode full of small, interpersonal dramas, nervousness, regret and fear for the future -- punctuated by sudden outbursts of state-sanctioned violence and political cruelty. It is, in other words, a perfect episode for the summer of 2025.

You know when you were a kid and you watched scary movies with the blanket close to your eyes so you couid cover them quickly? That’s how I listen to the project 1933 episodes 😭

On the statelessness and trans folks piece you discussed at the end - my coworker corrected his passport gender in 2016 but bc he was born in Missouri, his birth certificate was his only doc that still said female. When he applied for passport renewal this year they sent it back to him marked “F”. Though he is still a citizen, they’ve perversely trapped him here - he can’t really enter or exit the country without heavy suspicion as a guy who has a full beard and passes without issue in his day to day life.

I never got my documents changed to X because I didn’t trust that this wouldn’t happen and I pass as an (albeit dykey) woman, but my partner is much more gender ambiguous with facial hair and an X marker and I’m scared of border harassment with their X passport.

So I can really understand this feeling of precarity and mundanity… in our bubble of a very queer neighborhood in Boston, our lives proceed rather normally, but we are afraid because we can see that that protection is really ONLY from the bubble at this point.

I don't fault Prof. Klemperer his quotidian concerns about his home renovation. Probably this is because my house is my most valuable asset. If I had to, say, leave the country in a hurry, a higher home value can only help in leaving. Also, I did say "thank God my parents' home is fully paid off" because well... who even knows what's going to happen to the economy in the next three years. It's very easy to lose a house if all the wrong things go wrong at the right time. I guess all that is to say, the petty concerns are petty until the minute they aren't anymore.

You are really creating a valuable document with this series. At least valuable to me. Thank you again.

I also had a hot August, and am having trouble getting my leaky roof fixed because roofers are afraid they will get kidnapped off jobsites in my city now that we are occupied. I fear this for some of my own co-workers. Meanwhile im a trans guy with an immigrant husband, watching the laws (or executive orders) pile up against our existence. I always wondered what it must've been like to live through rising fascism. And now i know: you watch your neighbors get taken in the night, and wonder when your number will be up, and you organize as best you can, because you have no representation, and even if you did, the useless oppostion party isnt going to save your gay ass. But you also have to clean the house and buy an extra matress and good groceries because the inlaws are coming and life stops for no one. :(
