This is the second part of our epic deep dive into the life of Phyllis Schlafly -- the far-right firebrand who brought down an amendment and arguably helped transform a political party. In Part 2, Moira walks Adrian through Schlafly's attack on the Equal Rights Amendment, and how she pioneered a whole new style of politics to defeat what had been essentially a done deal -- or carried it into the mainstream, at any rate.

Here is a list of books we'll be referring to in both parts of this episode:

Andrea Dworkin, Right Wing Women

Jane J. Mansbridge, How We Lost the ERA

Marjorie J. Spruill, Divided We Stand

Donald T. Critchlow, Phyllis Schlafly and Grassroots Conservatism

Phyllis Schlafly, A Choice Not an Echo

Phyllis Schlafly, Strike from Space

y’all always post exactly when i’m itchin for a podcast🙏

I needed this. I was a teenager when Schlafly was doing her thing and I remember having to bite my tongue around my friends’ parents. (My mom and dad were conservative feminists; they believed strongly in women’s rights but also in thé néed for tasteful clothes and good haircuts.)

Canonical episode 🙏

An all-time great episode!

Edith

I recently read We Are Not Born Submissive by Manon Garcia which addresses this feminine submission urge in tradwife types, I think it's quite a good companion read to Right Wing Women

Kim

I’m so thrilled that Adrian is one of us now! ☺️

Kathryn M

Maybe I missed it but did y’all cover the fact that Phyllis’s oldest son (who worked for her org his whole adult life I believe) was/is gay?

Moira Donegan

Yes! We talk about it in episode 1.

Kathryn M

I may or may not have been half-asleep for episode one 🤣

Melanie Schlosser

I just...really love this podcast. 😭 Thank you, Moira and Adrian in general and Moira in particular for this episode.

Manon is a genius and a friend of the pod!! We did an episode with her on the Pelicot trial, which is the subject of her next book. I have a galley on my desk …

Heidi Lou

This was such a rich little/big series. Thanks for getting raw with us Moira and Adrian! And take care 🫶🏻

Edith

I read the one on the Pélicot trial just last week (I also listened to your episode with her). She’s doing an event speaking about her book in Berlin tomorrow which I’ll be attending :) reading We Are Not Born Submissive has encouraged me to finally take the plunge and read The Second Sex parts 1 & 2

Tbh unfair that Adrian got the extra side quest stories and generative yet tangential asides 😍 - release the extended editions or make a thiiiiiiird episode!!!

Megan

I was sure when you made the joke about Chicago airports you'd mention Brexit (allegedly conceived in an O'Hare Uno pizza restaurant)! In any case Chicago is as Moira said awesome and has a long history (and present) as an abortion sanctuary.

You all really made me ponder on the Black feminist frustration with white women as allies, and the insistence of Third World Feminists that they were the carrier of a more committed feminism. Not because white women are bad people, but because they occupy a structural position within patriarchy that offers the constant temptation to go with the flow. And yes, I remember Stop ERA all too well, and how my mom would rant about how horrible she was.

Koa Beck’s ‘White Feminism’ is a great companion piece to this pod series

this episode was absolutely perfect as someone who has such deep fascination with right wing figures, specially when it comes to women, I’ve always been baffled by Schalfly especially what Moira said at the end of the episode this push and pull between feminist and anti-feminist and why so many women without even realizing it tend to lean towards and more anti-feminist lifestyle perfectly encapsulate so much of what I’m seeing in my life right now! Would love to see more episodes like this! Or even just to hear the extended cut on patreon :)!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

The tactic of using opposition to the draft as a wedge to break ERA support really reminds me of the way trans women in sport has been used in the last few years. And both turn on some really unexamined ideas about women's supposed physical weakness.

Kat

Come to Chicago again Moira! We will make sure you have fun.
