In this episode, writer Sarah Weinman walks Moira and Adrian through the story of the 1978 case Oregon v Rideout and how spousal rape became a crime in the US. Weinman's book about the case -- Without Consent -- is out now. A moving, upsetting story about how the judicial system keeps pace (or doesn't) with legislation; how media shape how we think about social progress; and how that progress can come from strange places. PLEASE NOTE: This one comes with basically all the trigger and content warnings.

Not a problem. I'm delaying listening to the Parsifal episode anyway until I can watch / listen to the opera again first. And this author's story is super-important--I'm very glad you had her on.

So... I was an infant when NC made marital rape illegal and ten years old when gay sex became legal in NC. Cool cool, cool cool

Im definitely getting this book. I remember the trial ànd how hostile the world was to Greta.

I really appreciated this episode and Weinman's comments about (paraphrasing) stranger rape being the paradigm that sexual violence is typically and legally understood through as opposed to intimate partner violence - something I'm really trying to think through right now and seen some brilliant work on in feminist philosophy.
