In this episode, Moira walks Adrian through one of the more curious development of the fall of 2025: the MAGAification of America slamming into a brick wall made up of ... former MAGA stalwarts, who rose to prominence via QAnon, and who are almost exclusively women. The episode focuses on the cases of three members of congress -- Georgia's Marjorie "Space Lasers" Taylor Greene, Colorado's Lauren "Beetlejuice" Boebert, and Nancy Mace of South Carolina. There are a lot of trigger warnings with this one, naturally, but we think we got at the specific gender dynamics of the beginning MAGA crack-up.

One thing that is interesting about female dating strategies is that it has inspired its own community of people who feel that these strategies have failed them, the self proclaimed femcels, who have a lot of the anger and self loathing of incels (and as I understand it some of the misogyny - they can be incredibly vitriolic about women who are in relationships or are having sex in general). They haven’t gone on any shooting sprees (as mentioned in the episode) though, which is telling RE the gendered politics of violence.

Really interesting conversation about a fascinating topic. As always!

The aggressive bear / pitbull position of right wing women does justify their aggression, but it also specifically targets the right wing men in their lives. Many right wing men show more basic respect for and assign more inherent value fo female animals than they do human women. These women grew up being constantly reminded of their lower status, but this aggressive identity is exactly what launched them out of the standard gender roles prescribed for them and allowed them to ascend to their political success. It's also language they use to warn the men around them about what happens if those men target them or their children. The culture tells us that men's nature can't be prevented, but they should go after vulnerable people who don't have "mama bears" looking out for them.

Bit of Boebert context, as I live in Denver. She got divorced (I think she and her husband owned a restaurant where the wait staff open-carried, for real). That’s when the Beetlejuice handjob happened (along with vaping and pulling the “do you know who I am” card when they booted her). She moved districts, her previous one included some red parts of the Western Slope but also traditional Democratic power center Pueblo. Her new one is more-red suburbs, and some rural, so her margin got a little healthier.

Adrien, you read my mind on the Sarah Palin thing.

A really brilliant ep, thank you!

Thank you for standing up for the hashtag wine moms. One of your best episodes yet.

if you’re considering doing an episode on QAnon, it might be helpful to bring on the team from the QAA podcast as guests considering QAnon and general conspiracism is their whole beat

This was so fantastic. I’ve been engaging with a lot of secret lives of Mormon wives content and see such parallels for these women trapped in the patriarchal church system to the maga women. They’re not fully against the systems that are harming them, but they do have a solidarity with their gender and can hold power that way as one of their strongest options

Laura

“Resistance wine moms have the Mandate of Heaven” is a quote that will live rent-free in my head for a while

Best (maybe only) substantive analysis of this phenomenon I've seen. Gender lens for the win!

I grew up in Alaska at the height of Sarah Palin and most of the women in my family fit into this kind of Palin->Green-Boebert mold; I think you’re totally right that it’s as much a class marker as anything. The shrinking violet trope of femininity is kind of incompatible with the rural, rough lifestyle they either come from or seek to emulate

Kira Hamilton

The tough talking vulgarity is kind of essential to be able to show your ability to belong in that world; there’s a lot of pride in being able to “handle” these rough men by being tough back. The idea that you couldn’t hang is sort of a violation of their contract of womanhood as supporting their men “being men”

Kira Hamilton

So tl;dr I think in the social context many of these women exist in (or seek to emulate for votes) the rules of dominance and submission are just really different than in more cosmopolitan or middle/upper class environments. When I came to Boston and attending an elite university I was shocked at how different the gender politics were, even at their most conservative. Felt like a foreign land

Speaking of right wing women, I would absolutely love an episode on supreme Court wives. Ginny and Martha are off the rail and the gender dynamics are really interesting

I stumbled on the Female Dating Strategies subreddit back in like 2020 and was fascinated. It seemed like there was a lot more complaining and gender-policing than actual dating going on. 'If Books Could Kill' touched on them in a bonus episode - I think it was called 'Are the Straights Ok?' I'd listen to a whole episode on this topic, though

William Knight

Yeah that was a really good bonus episode for The Rules.

I grew up in a right wing household where either Rush Limbaugh or Dr. Laura was seemingly always on the radio, and when it came to women's place in society, the rule seemed to be that each woman could individually earn better treatment to the extent that she could think and act "like a man," mainly in terms of logic, strength, and emotional regulation. This is part of why many conservatives don't believe themselves to be sexist. To their minds, it's not that they only respect men, rather they respect anyone who can wield a certain quota of toxic masculinity, regardless of gender. That the women who make the grade are so few and far between is a shortcoming on the women's side, not theirs.

Charley

I so love these incisive analyses of gender intricacies and how varying types of women in varying situations assume certain characteristics. And how deeply nuanced it all is. IBWTR is a great successor to Dworkin’s Right Wing Women, which I’ve read excerpts from before but am now slowly making my way through (inc. Moira’s intro!)

Charley

I’m sorry but I do think “the Beetlejuice handjob” in one’s legacy kind of rocks

There’s a book about CrossFit out recently called “The Cult of CrossFit” by a scholar who herself does CrossFit! She talks about the religious and white supremacist undertones of the culture.
