On January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Good was murdered by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a killing that was captured by multiple camera phones and witnessed by dozens. Since the killing, the Trump administration has used several gendered lines of attack to discredit Renee Nicole Good, to celebrate the killing and to make propagandistic hay of this murder. In this emergency episode (recorded 2 days after the killing), Moira and Adrian talk about the killing, about the question of gender and where we go from here. Among the topics discussed: the echoes of the murder of George Floyd, the parallels with the Gestapo, and the "look what you made me do"-theory of authority.

Extrajudicial killings, sanctioned by the state - the heaviest of heavy topics waved away as inconsequential by the shittiest incarnation of a fascist regime that's only really just getting into second gear. I can't bring myself to listen to this episode before bed, it's going to have to wait until the morning. Poor Ms Good, may your murder spark many fires. Goodnight from Italy everyone. And thank you Adrian and Moira for the vital work that you do to analyse, explain, and expose, helping all of us to see, to think, and galvanising us to fight on.

Andrea

This was the best coverage of the bullshit I have heard so far. Thank you.

Straight up, every woman knows that kind of man. I’m bi and I’ve been accidentally on dates with that kind of man. I’ve been asked to dance by that kind of man. I’ve been in friendship groups where the other men excuse that kind of man. He shot Good to punish her wife and to make himself feel in control again. I heard a guy talking about how the women around him are feeling scared because of this, and frankly I’m not feeling any more scared than I normally do - maybe I’ve just had bad experiences compared to the population, but I’ve always known that guy is out there and if he had a gun, he’s a risk. This just showed the rest of the country, from multiple angles, what that kind of man does. I’m not more afraid. I’m angry that it’s getting increased state sanctions. I’m angry they’re actively seeking these men out and giving them authority and guns. Fuck ICE. Fuck this regime.

Thank you for this. Thank you for content that informs, angers, saddens, and amuses me. Seriously, I didn't realize I needed to hear someone talking about "the shitass community" just as much as I needed to hear an account that accurately describes this horror.

Kathryn Nadkarni

The SECOND I saw the “fucking bitch” footage, I thought of you two. Thank you for this compassionate yet smart and clear analysis. It is so parasocial to say lol but I appreciate experiencing hard times through your episodes - makes it easier for me to get through it and wrap my mind around it.

Katie

thank you ❤️

Sally Anne

Thank you for this 💛

Dianne

Thank you. I really needed to hear this to help me process all the rage and horror I feel, and why, and what it means.

Caitlin

Thank you for articulating my rage so carefully and succinctly. The thing that jumped out to me first when I saw the videos was the aspect of punishment to Good’s butch wife: a narcissistic injury to the very very weak person in the ICE uniform carrying a gun. I had Sarah Schulman’s book Conflict Is Not Abuse in mind throughout listening to this. The emotional economy of ICE is how she describes the IDF in that book: making a violence that they insist they are the victim of.

Moira Donegan

This really means a lot to me. 💘

kathleen

Hello from ICEey MSP. Thank you for this discussion. I deal with horrible stuff by going into THINK AND LEARN mode before I can really handle the tender emotional part of a problem. Your analysis and discussion this last year has made it a lot easier to feel through thinking. I'm so appreciative of your work this week in particular because shit's fucked up around here.

Louzie

From me, too, a heartfelt thank you! This really helped working through my - very much filtered by European media - thoughts and emotions, the rage, sadness, and fear this murder induces in me as a queer person.

Kerrie Murphy

Thanks for such thoughtful commentary. I especially liked the discussion around the differing level of restraint that the parties are expected to show. My teenage daughter works in retail and some of the things customers say to her are abhorrent and if it’s not ok for her to kill people it’s not ok for ICE agents to do it.

your point about heterosexuality requiring women to fill this weird sexy mommy role reminded me of this relationship axis i read about on substack a while back: mommy-baby/tyrant-serf. it was lesbian specific in its original context and the author was half-joking, but i feel like so many heterosexual relationships are very much woman as mommy serf and man as baby tyrant. but in an evil non-playful way.

Gwen

The queer erasure in what ended up in my (social-)media reports here in Europe is really disturbing. Without watching videos of the killing, I did not know before listening to this that she had a wife, even though her wife was there when she was killed!! It was never mentioned. Your explanation of her queerness as part of the motivation behind this murder makes so much sense. The statement of her wife that Moira read at the end was really moving.

Tessa Lee Gloede

Straight listener here.... Don't be sorry, unfortunately what you've described does sound like all of my romantic relationships 😕 😔

Will Robinson

this was so raw, I had to join your patron to support you. this gave me respite. thank you.

Rae LeGrone

Thank you for your show. You omitted from your list of cities that stood up to ICE/CPB Charlotte, NC. So many of us, generational residents (black and white, with all the freighted history we share) and our immigrant siblings, rallied and organized to mitigate the damage caused by these paramilitary ethnic cleansers. Please don't write off the South!

Olivia

Thank you both for your vulnerability. I could tell this one was hard to make, but your openness and your rage make me feel less alone in the face of this injustice. Keep doing the good work, and be well.

Sarah

Thank you guys so much, as always, for putting so many of my feelings into words and for making me a laugh a little in listen to your discussion about a topic that sends me into spirals of both despair and blinding rage. I was listening to the gender discourse as I was petting my tiny male chihuahua before leaving for work and let him know that I love him as my giant tyrannical king baby, so that helped me process it all a little bit 😅

Murphy

I love the deeper gender-analysis of this situation. Some of my best friends are losers too, AND they have no desire to hurt anyone.

Alexandra Schultz

Brillant observations from Moira about the moral economy

Moira Donegan

Sending solidarity to you in the Twin Cities. 🩵

Kiera

Thank you for your brilliant and compassionate analysis, as always. This particular episode hit home for me as a Chicago resident. A few months ago, ICE jumped the fence of my neighbor’s house to kidnap construction workers, and proceeded to tear gas the ensuing protest in our neighborhood. Sending love and strength to all IBWTR listeners in the Twin Cities 🩷

Lu

European here. I thought ICE was like border police or military... went on to read a bit about it. I cannot believe that there can be anything worse than police or military. Awful.

Lu

Sending my best wishes to you all in america.

Ella S.

The murder as libidinal was eye opening, thank you

James Talley

This'll sound repressed and male and messed up, but I have a hard time just FEELING something like this. It happens, I clock the horror, and I move to respond. Like everything over the past X years has turned me into a robotic tactician and local organizer, and mourning and feeling it all will come when...it's over? Over for me? I dunno. Defense mechanism of course. Like how anger and violence are the only acceptable emotions for men, and if i let myself feel anything, I'll jump right on those socially greased wheels and at least lose effectiveness. But hearing this episode helped. Sure I listened while working, but it was just enough of the raw emotion and the structural analysis to feed a few bits of kibble to that starved part of me that otherwise takes these atrocities and logs them and says "Next!" as if I can take it all in and on without breaking forever. So, thank you again.

tina dee garland

my younger sister is in high school and she has a friend whose mom was taken by ICE back in september and deported while she was at school. now my sister’s friend has dropped out of school to work full time at wendy’s to support herself. she’s 17. they ruin lives.

kathleen

Thx. I have to go back to work out of state next week and I really don't want to leave. ❤️ It's no fun here right now but it's mine.

lsh

Thank you for being so coherent while blazingly angry. Grief shared is powerful.

Sarah B

Thank you for covering this so effectively, noting every important detail

OuijaFBabysMama

This is incredible. Thank you for your work!

Kathryn M

Thanks for covering this! I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the videos. As always, I appreciate y’all’s intelligence and empathy.

stella Velez

Thank you guys for this episode and analysis. There’s a kind of comfort in hearing other people voice the anger and grief that I know I am feeling as well right now. The worst thing I’ve seen that’s developed since this episode was recorded is the way that the right is working to demonize Renee Goods wife. I’ve seen claims that she was abusive towards her children or even her wife, all absolutely unfounded. There is so much anger and hatred being focused on this widow because she is a lesbian and because she is butch.

Greg

Moira's comment to the effect of, "Well if Usha is his [JD Vance's] mommy, maybe she can also trade him for some percs" made me laugh out loud. Excellent podcast, it's nice to hear the seething anger and critical analysis that this moment really demands.

kathleen

Just ducking in to say mayor Jacob Frey might have told ICE to fuck off on camera. But Haircut Jr is also boldly declaring on the news that he doesn't support abolishing ICE because something something spineless law enforcement pandering something. Which is to say he's being his usual self. His constituents hate ICE. Dems broadly hate ICE. But Mayor Frey is here kissing up to the SA of MSP. Blech.

Amber Young

Thank you for your work and compassion that you two pour into everything you do. This episode was hard to listen to and I'm sure even harder to make. Sending you both love and care right now.

Paula Hoff

Thank you so much for talking about this. It’s all happening so fast. They’re so violent and so oppressive. I was threatened yesterday twice with arrest for legally observing. One charged me with his hand on his gun for blowing a whistle, on private property where the cops had been called because they had been told to leave and had no warrant. Non white people regardless of status are hiding, kids aren’t going to school. Mine stayed home too, despite being white (the only kind of people allowed per ICE standards) cause up the street from their school domestic terrorists are raining terror on an apartment complex, staging in massive numbers, wearing street clothes and masks. They bring battered legal observers to the hospital. We’re leaving notes in our cars so people can call our contacts when we’re whisked off to the dungeon in the whipple building, and people know to look for that. They’ve escalated so much. I’m in the suburbs and they swarmed us yesterday. Hit every school. It is truly very gendered and it was so cathartic to hear a thoughtful analysis of this dynamic. The resistance is overwhelmingly female. I cannot stress enough how badly I needed this thoughtful analysis, I deeply appreciate your willingness to grapple with this horror for us. We aren’t armed and violent but we are smart and they are not, so I try to keep hope. They’ve hit every hospital too. Bus stops have to be patrolled, schools. The news is depicting only a fraction of what is happening here, it’s hard to get a sense of the scale.

Susan Olson

Very much appreciate this thoughtful coverage. As a Minneapolis resident of 16 years, I just wanted to echo a previous commenter, that Jacob Frey is often good on camera but a loose stool in practice. Very much *not* a reliable progressive. Generally speaking people here are quite frustrated that the vast majority of support and action is coming from average citizens and not from our governor, mayor, or particularly Senator Klobuchar. As I write this I can hear helicopters overhead in the wake of another murder. People are dug in and committed to resisting, but God, some back up would be nice.

JanaKat

Removed my comments, I'm so sorry, they were for episode 118! Not sure how they wound up here.
