As ICE descends on multiple American cities, abducts and maims people, kidnaps children, hits toddlers with teargas, and kills people just for standing up for them, one frequent comparison is with the German gestapo of the 1930s. This episode delves into that comparison, and into the story of the "Geheime Staatspolizei", its origins and its function in the "Third Reich".

Here are some of the books we cite in this episode:

Robert Gellately, The Gestapo and German Society

Frank McDonough, The Gestapo: The Myth and Reality of Hitler's Secret Police

Eric A. Johnson, Nazi terror : the Gestapo, Jews and ordinary Germans

Thank you for being the comforting voices in my ear as I work at a hotel currently hosting a cop group. Love you guys.

I’m in Ohio, and we’re close enough to Springfield that my city is potentially going to be in the blast radius of whatever happens there. Which is why we’ve started going neighborhood by neighborhood preemptively organizing local ICE watch cells. If Minneapolis can hold the line, so can we.

Thank you for this fascinating episode. In 2020, a supplement to the Minneapolis Star Tribune arrived on our doorstep titled Myths and Legends of Ancient Minnesota. It was a project by artist Brooks Turner exploring 20th c fascism (and resistance to it) in Minnesota pre-war WWII. He points out the connection between Minnesota's fascism with white supremacy, the Confederacy, and slavery in the US. I was also struck by how many white Minnesotans clearly built social and political identities that connected straight to European fascist movements. The Costco Gestapo Chic of Greg Bovino would appeal to a lot of the freaks* holding Order of the Silver Arrow meetings around Minneapolis and outstate Minnesota in 1932. I'm sure some of those folks were interested in the topic you're discussing now as a relevant current event (aspirational). You can read about the project here: https://wam.umn.edu/brooks-turner-legends-and-myths-ancient-minnesota-0 It's probably worth pointing out a faculty member at UMN has done some incredible work documenting the process of redlining in the Twin Cities as done with covenants associated with deeds of home sales. She points out the KKK never really needed to show their faces around town because home buyers did the work of segregation very effectively on their own. I'm very proud of my home but whew. That pride has a complex history. My parents' home, it turns out, had a covenant forbidding the sale of the property to Jewish people. It was built in 1939. That project can be found here: https://mappingprejudice.umn.edu/ *just some guys, actually

Hello from an American grad student in Germany! Thank you so much for this wonderful series. Your discussion of denunciations reminded me of how a decree on "Bekämpfung des Denunziantentums" (combating denunciations) issued by the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior in 1934 (Thuringia being a notorious early stronghold of Nazi support). I just found it again, so I thought I would Google Translate it: "Recently, a significant increase in denunciation has been observed. Numerous reports are filed with the police authorities regarding allegedly anti-state statements. Upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that these reports are almost exclusively based on personal disputes and that the statements in question date back many months. Particularly in domestic disputes, the opposing parties are often politically suspected. The police authorities are therefore instructed to take action against the frivolous filing of unjustified reports [...] Every effort must be made to ensure that the phenomenon of denunciation, unworthy of the German people and the National Socialist state, disappears." Love you guys! Fuck ICE!!! Chinga la migra!!!!

♥️♥️ Make 'em cry, Ohio. Hopefully you'll have the pleasure we had when video went around including an ICE goon telling a comrade "I'm never coming back to Minneapolis." Fuck ICE.

In the last few days, The Nation nominated the citizens of Mpls for the Nobel Peace Prize (A+ trolling). Wee Liam of the Bunny Hat and his dad returned home, the big Grammy winners made ICE OUT statements, Pro Publica released the names of the two ICE goons who murdered Alex Pretti, a whistle blowing cadre of folks in South shamed some goons trying to pick up take out Mexican food for dinner, a TX state senate district special election made a shocking flip to the dem candidate, and the generosity and solidarity of folks supporting rent relief efforts in the Cities is obvious in the monthly donation reports folks are releasing. People have so many better things to do than snitch on their neighbors. They're doing them. I know this is a perilous time and we're in an ultramarathon, but today at least I'm feeling optimistic. Fuck the Gestapo, and Fuck ICE.

Good points about the denunciations of neighbours and competitors. Seems to be a reoccurring and persistent issue if you think about Witch trials, Gestapo and Stasi and probably all others such organisations. Plus the current issue with abortion as Moira mentions and lots of others. We humans can be terrible...

I’m here for any continuation of the 1933 Project so thank yall so much for this episode! Fuck ICE!

This episode left me much more hopeful than I'd expected it would, so thank you both. And fuck ICE and CBP!

As a gymnastics fan, I absolutely cackled at the story about rival gym owners trying to report on each other. Extremely messy and now everyone has to hear about it? Yep, sounds about right. 🤪 Anyway excellent work as always, thank you, and Fuck ICE!

Veruca GASH

Ok, ok, you lured me behind the paywall. Listening to you two makes me feel smarter and more prepared to live under a fascist regime. This is by far my favorite political pod. 💜

Also fuck white supremacy/Nazis and fuck ICE. 🚫 Believe your eyes, not the lies.

fantastic bonus ep!!!!!! the part about how the nazis used a kind of analog surveillance state made me think of that new ring camera ad that uses ai facial recognition. it made me think i’d really love an episode on the surveillance culture but also just the conservative bleakness that all the superbowl ads had this year…. love u both as usual !!!!

As a Minnesota who lives in the same community as Liam and Adrian Ramos, thank you for all your episodes on this topic, as well as Project 1933. I am sick today and unable to do my usual community defense work and feel very guilty - this was a nice companion while Im stuck on the sofa!

This was another great episode, I love that you’ve been working on this project and helping make sense of the current environment. I wanted to recommend the wetheunhoused podcast as a potential crossover . The host , Theo, has really good takes on the targeting of the unhoused by the current fascist administration and also California policy , and the intersections of ICE and transgender rights when you don’t own property. https://www.instagram.com/wetheunhoused?igsh=bGdid2Z6ajlyczZw
