For this episode, Moira and Adrian talk about Chief Creep Elon Musk, his worldview and the role gender plays in his politics with Ben Tarnoff, co-author of the recent Muskism. In a wide-ranging conversation, they discuss what shaped Musk's ideas of autarky, vertical integration, "fortress capitalism", and how a gendered siege mentality is remaking the way we work and live in the United States today.

Adrian, you referred to Bataille when you mentioned “individual sovereignty”. Where might I read something about that? — And would an episode on Bataille, Blanchot, Althusser, and/or Deleuze and Guattari be appropriate for IBWTR?

Re futurism, closing word is Gramsci : The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters.”

A nice thing to soothe me re: the horrible subject matter is Ben rivalling Peter S in the sexy voice stakes 🤷🏼‍♀️

Adrian, your point that keeping the women at home made me think about the rise of the tradwife influencer and wannabes. They promise a life in which you don't need to leave your home. You can "fortify" your family from the home by milking your own cow, growing your own food, etc. As these are tradwifes are promoted on platforms they are but one cog in the wheel of self-sovereignity.

If the left is offering a return to old models of liberal democracy that no one thinks can work and the right is offering new models of a fascist futurism, then who's actually progressive and who's conservative and what even do words mean anymore?!

best analysis i’ve heard on musk precisely bc it offers a structural analysis of his ideology! thank you

We definitely need the Shulamith Firestone episode after this! Just generally, though, I’d love an opportunity for the two of you to just talk together about the (erroneous) conflation of technological progress with social progress and I think, to Ben’s point towards the end, generally problematising the concept of progress (ie to what?), not tied to any particular figure but just because I always love your insights. I think it’s been so interesting to see just in the last few years how we’ve been shocked to discover that eg sci-fi authors/filmmakers are conservative because that conflation is so active. I feel it’s kind of bizarre cause, having just re-read Brave New World for a book club (deep sigh) one of the most shocking things to me about much sci-fi is how these dudes can imagine fantastic worlds of possibility… but somehow not imagine the personhood and dignity of women, queer people, and people of colour. Anyway. Great episode. Thank you. You have helped me be even more unbelievably tedious to everyone in my book club and I couldn’t be happier ❤️
