Yeah, the disconnect between the torchwood S1 finale and this episode bothers me. I can't find much to shed light on why they decided to not have the doctor pick Jack up from inside the torchwood hub. The most that I can say is that there around 6 months between the torchwood finale airing and utopia airing, so probably the same between them being filmed, that could account for little differences but doesn't really explain it. At a guess I'd say that they didn't want people who hadn't seen Torchwood to be confused.

I came to say more or less the same thing. I'm going to assume the shows didn't communicate on how one episode and this one began. I try to force my brain to be like well if he parked on top of hub opening maybe there would be blow back into the base but that my me trying to force it to make sense.

I'd probably suggest removing that last part for now.

The Master was a major figure from Doctor Who’s classic era. He was first introduced in 1971 during the Third Doctor's run and became one of the Doctor’s most iconic enemies alongside the Daleks and the Cybermen. The Master appeared in episodes alongside the Third doctor, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh as well as appearing in the Doctor Who movie with the Eighth doctor.

So happy you enjoyed this episode and that you got to see the reveal so the Master. He's a villain from Classic Who but not just any villain. The best way I can describe the Master, is that if the Doctor is Batman then the Master would be the Joker, aka Doctor's archenemy. Just like the Doctor, the Master has been played by different actors because of the regeneration, originally introduced in the Third Doctor era, he was meant to be a villain for that era alone, but was dropped when the og actor died, but fans loved him so much the show brought him back but with another actor. I might be wrong look it up. Also the child actor playing Creet, John Bell (the boy who spoke to Martha) got the role because he won a competition on a British tv show called Blue Peter and I remember watching him win and was happy for him, and then feeling annoyed with both him and me. Cause I kept saying "damm it that could of been me" but I didn't enter the competition so that's my own fault. Chan-I always felt sorry for that bug lady admiring the professor only to be killed by him-thou. Plus I found the way she spoke interesting, didn't deserve it.

In a DVD commentary RTD talked about needing a scene between Jack outside the TARDIS in the time vortex and the opening credits because otherwise Jack should be on the TARDIS in the credits, but they didn't have the money for the CGI. Yep, it always bothered me that how Torchwood ended and how this started didn't add up. Jack and Ten's dynamic is everything to me. YANA= You are not alone, so simply brilliant. The master is one of the Doctors oldest villains, i haven't seen classic who so i didn't get the significance the first time i saw, i have since then. I love this ep too.

Zoot!

My first time watching this back in the day (I was racing to catch up before s5 finished), and the YANA reveal blew my mind. That whole end sequence was amazing. Derek Jacobi as the Master was absolutely perfect casting. This is one of my most fav episodes of the show.

Hi Shan just James Patreon member, (yes we know who you are) Shan don’t worry he likes blondes you don’t have to show him your teeth but we appreciate it. John Bell, the little blonde haired boy who played Creet, entered a Blue Peter competition to appear in this episode. He was told over the phone by RTD that he had won over 8,000 other competition applicants to appear on the program. The runners-up, Lizzie Watkins and Jonathan Wharton, appeared as extras. Rather than creating a new fob watch for Professor Yana, they used the same prop introduced in Human Nature/The Family of Blood, cementing the connection between the two stories. Okay so you know how the opening scene didn’t quite match up with what happened at the end of Torchwood well a late change to the script affected the start of the episode, which originally depicted the Doctor and Martha outside the TARDIS. The Time Lord then ushered his companion back into the Ship, pointedly ignoring Jack's approach. However, it was decided that this action should be simplified to avoid bringing David Tennant and Freema Agyeman out on location for such a brief scene. Instead, RTD revised this material to take place solely in the TARDIS console room. As such, only John Barrowman was required to perform Jack's dash towards the departing TARDIS. David Tennant and John Barrowman actively tried to outrun each other during the scenes where they were running for their lives, with Freema Agyeman just trying to keep up with them. I’m glad you liked this episode it only took 3 series but we got there eventually haha The ending is my favourite part with The Doctor getting all stressy even yelling at Martha and I didn’t know who The Master was when I first watched it either. PS Utopia translated from Japanese means the happy fun boat that kills you.

I've always really liked this episode, it doesn't quite go on my favorites list like The Girl in the Fireplace or Blink, but it's a really good episode. I thought it was well done and that reveal at the end, even though at the time I didn't know who the Master was, I still thought was great. I did immediately look up who the master was after the episode though and it seemed like they had a complicated history. I actually really liked the YANA, You Are Not Alone reveal, as well. Derek Jacobi was a great choice for this role and did really great with it. I felt bad for Chantho.

Anton Brakhage

Another of my favourites, my biggest complaint with this one is that we didn't get to see more of Jacobi's Master before he regenerated.
