Hey Shan hope you’re doing good and things are better for you. Watch Doctor Who they said, it’ll be fun they said. As fans we all knew the demise of the Ponds was coming because it was all over the newspapers. And Karen was starring as Nebula in Guardians. Matt Smith was asked by a fan at a convention why the Doctor can't go back and get a bus or a boat to New York to visit Amy and Rory in the past. He replied, "Because Moffat!" (The showrunner) Steven Moffat chose New York City as a setting after spending a family holiday there. He described the city as "a different backdrop" to shoot a Doctor Who story in, and made use of its architecture. Caroline Skinner (the show’s executive producer) felt that the location "had such scale and romance" which gave the episode a real atmosphere and a very different tone for what has quintessentially been British Doctor Who. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill both wanted to leave the show in manner that would be effectively permanent. And if you follow their careers both have done exceptionally well for themselves. Neither of them wanted to undercut the emotion of their farewell by establishing a revolving door of return appearances. Karen Gillan said in an interview, "I literally couldn't read the script without crying. It was the most highly-charged read-through I've ever experienced. But I couldn't have asked for a better exit. I don't think it'll be what people expect." The Doctor musing that he could never take the TARDIS back to 1938 New York was added later in production, requiring an extra day's filming at Box Cemetary. If you look closely you can see Karen’s hair looks different before she steps in the Tardis. There is an additional minisode which was written by Chris Chibnall with a voiceover by Arthur Darvill. It explains what happened to Brian when the Doctor Amy and Rory never returned. I do love the relationship between The Doctor and River towards the end like when he’s on the steps getting told off for doing something right feels very marriage like to me. And you were right Amy is the best companion followed by Donna because gingers gotta stick together! A tearful farewell to The Ponds, it’s a beautiful bittersweet goodbye, I’ve always found it to be a good Angels story with a sad ending. Three roses. A full Stapleton beard. Fan favourite.

I was not a fan of this episode when it first aired. A lot of contrivances, and Amy and Rory's relationship being built on a willingness to kill themselves was a running theme I do not like (seriously, I have never found "I will kill myself for you" to be romantic, but toxic). Also River/Moffat referring to the Doctor as a psychopath- yeah, no. Irresponsible, yes. Ruthless, sometimes. Psychopath, no. He has too much capacity for both empathy and guilt. I disliked it less on this rewatch however. And I agree 100% about Amy and Rory working best as a pair of companions- if its just Amy its just her obsessing over and hitting on the Doctor, and if it was just Rory, much as I love him, he simply wouldn't travel with the Doctor, and they'd be arguing constantly if he did. The three of them together could be great though. I think despite my criticisms this era of the show, where it was the three of them, is still my favourite.

Okay this episode does have some plot holes in it, could of fixed them if this story had been a two-parter. But it is definitely sad, Amy and Rory are gone and the Doctor lost his family. But if you think about it maybe they got transported to different universes instead, Rory went to DC and became Rip Hunter, Amy went to Marvel and become Nebula and Ruby Roundhouse in Jumanji. So while it is sad that the characters are dead, at least the actors went to do amazing things.
