The term "mate" has been used to mean a companion or friend for over 600 years, appearing in the English language since the 14th century.

You know you're a true Doctor Who fan when you're thinking up loopholes for how the Doctor could have gone back for Amy and Rory.

This season has a weird structure to it. We get Clara introduced in a one-off, then a few episodes of just more Rory and Amy, then they leave mid-season, and then we get the Clara story. The Doctor really took losing the Ponds hard. At least he didn't try traveling alone this time and go all Time Lord Victorious again, he just sat on a cloud and sulked. Agreed that he did get attached to Clara awfully quickly. Is it cheating on River if he flirts with other women? I guess that's between him and River, and whatever point in their personal timelines they are right now. I did love the music in this episode, and Matt Smith's performance. Top notch.

The characters Jenny, Vastra (the Silurian) and Straxx (the Sontaran) are the same characters we saw in the "Good Man Goes to War" episode last season. Strand died in it but was brought back to life. This trio which is called the Paternoster Gang become popular after this episode, and fans asked Moffat if he could make a spin-off show with them. However Moffat said he would of loved to have made one but, he was too busy with this show and Sherlock to make it. Which is a shame, I would of watched it, Vastra and Jenny would of been the cool power couple and Straxx the comic relief.

In case you didn't notice the villains were played by Richard E. Grant (the guy who played old Loki, in the Loki tv show) and Ian McKellen (bloody Gandalf and Magneto, how cool is that). The character McKellen played is called Great Intelligence, a villain from old Who in the era of the Second Doctor, all the way back in the 60s.

Hey Shan hope things are better for you now, over here it’s a been a hot week, lots of ice cream, hi-rise t-shirts on bigger men that should know better and restless nights. The Snowmen was shown on Christmas Day 2012, Game of Thrones was popular, Gangnam style was topping the charts and The first Avengers movie was in the cinema. So yes lots of ‘winter is coming’ references. Does Clara not seem a bit, how do I put this. Too 21st century for a girl from the Victorian era. But yes! You are correct the Victorian Clara was meant to be the current travelling companion but Moffat nixed this idea because the companion is our pov into the Doctors world and it would be hard to relate with her Victorian era sensibilities and way of behaving. Sees the newly decorated TARDIS Shan: he’s redecorated! I don’t like it We (the audience) have had the time to grieve the loss of Amy and Rory, so to see the Doctor moving on so quickly wasn’t so abrupt and quick for us. Timey-Wimey. He said it himself “I don’t know why, I only know Who” I took that to mean that the audience doesn’t know why but we’ll find out in due time. Steven Moffat wanted to show the Doctor's reaction to losing Amy and Rory: "I think he's probably reached the point in his life where he's saying, 'Friendship for me is just postponed bereavement — I want to be on my own for a while'." I get that, when you’ve lived as long as he has. Steven Moffat compared the withdrawn Doctor we see at the beginning of the episode to the first appearances of the First and Ninth Doctors. Matt Smith described his costume as "a bit Artful Dodger meets the Doctor". Steven Moffat described the new outfit as a "progression" as the Doctor was in "a different phase of his life now" and felt more "grown-up" and fatherlike. There were plans to give Vastra, Jenny and Strax a spin-off, this wasn’t a backdoor pilot or anything because of Steven Moffat's commitment to Sherlock (which is also great) made that impossible, so he incoporated them into this show. At one point he was writing for both shows at the same time. Richard E Grant (Dr Simeon) and the voice of the snow Ian McKellen (Gandalf and Magneto) had previously been candidates to play the Eighth Doctor. It’s a fine Christmas story, lots going on here and it does take your mind off stuffing your face with too much food and fighting with your family. One rose from me it’s not one I rewatch because of the Amy/Rory sadness of it all.
