Two big disclaimers here. One, I am no law specialist. I’m just running off prior experiences of family, friends and public hearings. Two, I live in US. US law and Australian law have differences. Having said that, the rules that govern custody hearings are very different from the rules in criminal law. The witnesses here are character witnesses. They are giving their opinion on the fitness of Violette as a mother. In this case and in this court, the questions, with some exceptions, are relevant. If you are a character witness, your character is relevant. If you demonstrate yourself to be someone who lies to get what you want and the lawyer shows you don’t want Violette to have the child. It is reasonable to question if you might be lying in this situation. The one question asked that I believe would not be allowed is the one on abortion. At the time this takes place, history of abortions was considered protected information and could not be used as testimony in a court of law. Again though, I have no special knowledge of these things and could very well be wrong.

It made me laugh so much that the wrong episode opened up and there was immediately a spoiler. I guess it’s a good thing though or it would have taken a lot longer to realise! I took the last episode to mean Violet wanted to work towards shared custody, rather than work towards full custody or something, which is why i said I feel like Pete was being a bit unreasonable. I don’t think it’s because i’ve seen the show before either because i’ve only seen this season and most of the show actually i think once so I don’t fully remember the details. I think i can kinda see why the judge ruled the way he did and I’m glad he specified that she’s free to appeal again in the future, but I do think from everything we’ve seen i think she deserves more than just supervised visits. But maybe that’s just a case of us being in viewer land knowing more than other characters. Not good to see everyone playing dirty here, and I think it’s a massive shame that as a result of Pete bringing up things about Violet, it’s Addison that is the one that gets publicly shamed like that.
