HAPPY FRIDAY!

OK i have some things to talk about below!! So if you haven't seen this then beware

🚨Spoilers Below! 🚨

Well! I am excited that I have now seen this original Sci-Fi classic! But I am a little irked with myself because I feel like the reveal was wasted on me because i have seen Rise/Dawn/War "Reboots". I actually forgot that they are alllllll PREQUELS! Until it dawned on me LOL Obviously!

All that being said! I really liked this movie! I thought it was really thought provoking and had a lot of themes to think on about our own society. I loved the makeup and the score and I felt like the pacing was really great! I can't even begin to imagine what this would of been like seeing in theatres in 1968! I reallllly want to see the rest of these original movies because I feel like they ought to be good! But you know me! I love Sci-fi!

Can someone please explain me to the space mission and why they landed back on earth!? I just figured that was what happened and they had been gone so long with everything that happened and thats why they didn't recognize it was earth?????Cause it got nuked?

I do think this is a like a Star Wars situation where you should ONLY watch these in the order which they are released. The prequels should NOT be watched first.

I am excited for Kingdom though! I think i will most likely enjoy it because I loved the reboots so much!

Note * I have never seen the Mark Wahlberg 2001 version as well as the rest of the original POTA's from (1970-1972).

Thanks soo much for being here! I feel so much better and glad my lingering cough didn't take over the reaction!!!!!

Let me know alllll your thoughts down below!

Planet of the Apes (1968)

I'd like to offer comforting words, but it does kinda suck for you that you watched the prequels first, because, yeah, the reveal at the end was mind blowing. No, I'm not so old I saw it when it originally came out, but it made my adorable, little six year old brain explode when I saw it in the 80's. Throughout the entire movie you're meant to believe that they had crashed on an alien planet, not back on earth. So seeing the Statue of Liberty half buried in the sand at the end was a gut punch. But you're a great movie watcher so you could still appreciate it. But, yeah, can't lie, it would've hit harder if you hadn't seen the prequels. As to the sequels, can't help you with those. Never seen them either.

The Mark Wahlberg Apes movie does not exist. Except for Tim Roth's performance. He is excellent, almost like he was acting in a different movie.

SPOILERS for this movie only. Haven's seen the reaction yet, but I'm glad you liked it. It's a classic. In regards to the end twist, probably one of the best in movie history for me. It completely puts the movie in a different light. Kinda like 6th Sense. It was during the cold war still and the question was always (as it still is), we will go so far as to destroy ourselves now that we have nuclear weapons. You think you're watching something being played out on a different planet and suddenly at the end it turns on us and shows us that we destroyed ourselves, a dark look into the mirror. A very serious message packaged in what you thought up until then was a lighthearted scifi adventure. I didn't want to mention it, but the twist was already shown in the thumbnail in your upcoming post, but probably not something one puts together without seeing it. I think the prequels are great movies, but take the surprise out of the twist if you watch this afterwards. And of course with the cold war being over it doesn't impact as strongly as it did back then I guess, I also watched this 20+ years later. However it still gives people food for thought and is just an entertaining watch. I won't say anything about the rest of the movies, just that I'm on board for that journey. Glad you're feeling better.

Avoid the Mark Wahlberg POTA if possible Ames. Terribly disappointing in my opinion. This was a groundbreaking film when it was released. The makeup alone freaked people out. Paul Williams came onto the Tonight Show during filming dressed in full costume once (its on youtube) Linda Harrison, who played Nova, got the part the old fashioned way. She was dating the producer!

Bill Maurer

An all time sci-fi classic. Supposedly, during filming, the different kind of apes used in this movie would "congregate" only with each other. Chimps would eat lunch with the Chimps. Orangutans would only eat with other Orangutans and so on.

I don't personally get the hate for the Mark Wahlberg version. Was it anywhere near the best, no.. but worth watching IMO.

Putting on your reaction now :) "Our first Article of Faith tells us that the Almighty created the Ape in his own image; that he gave him a soul and a mind; that he set him apart from all the beasts of the jungle, and made him lord of the planet. These sacred truths are self-evident." As for Planet of the Apes movies, these four are my favorites: Planet of the Apes (1968) + the Matt Reeves trilogy (Rise, Dawn, and War).

This is the significant problem for people who come to find the original versions of modern remakes. They often find them to be both superior in storytelling, and have a narrative impact that falls flat if its been spoiled by modern remakes. Its a great shame, but a good life lesson for anyone wanting to watch a series that contains remakes - originals first - always.

• It wasn't a waste! And that was a totally fun reaction! And you got it under your belt! I understand your frustration completely, but that said: you had a great appreciation for everything that was outstanding about it.....and you had fun with the elements we ALL have always had fun with: Charlton Heston's over-the-top (and mostly post-dubbed) line readings, for instance! 😂 • The fact that the actors could be so expressive and individualistic in those masks is practically a magic trick to me. The actors Roddy McDowell (Cornelius), Kim Hunter (Zera) and Maurice Evans (Dr. Zaius) are all great actors. Kim Hunter is Stella in "A Streetcar Named Desire"! So you'll definitely see her again! Roddy McDowell pops in lots of stuff. • Totally agree with you about Linda Harrison as Nova, fantastic non-verbal acting. • Charlton Heston is a bit like William Shatner for me (although I prefer Shatner!); he played Moses in The Ten Commandments, he played Ben Hur....he's that kind of movie star hero actor. He's not exactly method! He's sort of like Tom Cruise, easily mocked, but in lots of classic movies (he's actually a great Shakespearean actor!). • The 1970s sequels are in no way "essential" or classic. They're fun, maybe, for the next time you do one of the live watchalongs, where you punk on 'em! But I wouldn't go out of my way to see any of the other 70s ones (nor the Tim Burton remake); you've seen the classic "Planet Of The Apes". • We take these guys for granted, but man oh man, some great stunt work in that hunt scene! People falling from great heights, backwards, into dirt, or water. Dragged through the brush. The things people do to make a movie.....amazing. • Yes, the nuclear war thing is right on. That's one thing I wish they hadn't changed that for the prequels; it's great to have all the callbacks to the original, but it would have been way cooler not to change the whole point of the original film! That might have been a better way of "honoring" it! But whatever! :P • What's fantastic about you seeing this movie on top of everything else: Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" came out the same exact day in 1968! So when you finally see that, you'll have something to compare it to! In review: please don't feel bad! I had a blast!!! It's a cool little movie! It's like a Twilight Zone! Great world building, great music, cinematography, sets.......a total accomplishment for everyone who worked on it!

Enjoyed your reaction. The makeup was excellent, especially for almost half a century ago. The Charlton Heston comments about man in the very beginning and then laughing at the planting of the mini US flag set a tone. I thought Charton Heston did excellent from beginning to end of the movie. So many quotes. "Take your paws off me, you damn dirty ape." Yeah, they did give him a beautiful female. "Me Tarzan. You Jane." "It's a madhouse. A madhouse." "Consider the Sacred Scrolls ... the Thirteenth Scroll, which says: 'And Proteus brought the upright beast [man] into the garden and chained him to a tree and the children did make sport of him'." Dr. Zaius didn't want the apes to know b/c it challenges/undermines their belief system. Their faith. Their religion. Yet, aspects of ape scripture might have been congruent. "Let me conclude with the words of the greatest Ape of all, our Lawgiver, in the 29th Scroll, sixth verse: 'Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death'."

Great reaction! (And it's good to see that you're feeling better) As far as the crash landing goes, I believe they were on course to return home to Earth, but they thought that they went off course and landed on an alien planet. The reason for the extreme disparity in the current time on the ship and "Earth time" is time dilation -- in other words, the closer you get to the speed of light, the more time slows down relative to an object moving more slowly (this is a real phenomenon explained by Einstein's theory of relativity; astronauts on the space station experience a tiny, tiny bit of time dilation relative to people on Earth). [Disclaimer: I am not a scientist, LOL, I got my knowledge from Carl Sagan and PBS.] (By the way, I like that they had comfy hibernation pods; some movies just put 'em in a plastic or metal tube, ouch!) (SPOILERS)

I’ve seen them all and even the bad sequels to this one are worth watching. But man, the newer ones are so good! I hope Kingdom lives up to the legacy. It’s a new director.

This was a first time watch for me, Ames! Unfortunately, the ending was spoiled for me too, not because I had seen any other of the POTA movies, but because I had seen the ending of this one at some point. I don't remember exactly when; it may have even been a parody of some kind, I'm not sure, but when Taylor looked up from his horse on the beach, I knew exactly what he was going to see. Perhaps it's just one of those things that's hard to keep secret in popular culture - like knowing who Luke Skywalker's father is without having seen Star Wars. I loved Jerry Goldsmith's score! So creative and delightful! I also thought the prosthetics were AMAZING, especially knowing this movie came out 56 years ago! So, even though the reveal didn't do anything for me, I'm glad I watched the film with you! Another movie I've been intending to watch for a long time checked off the list!

The score was the highlight for me. Very unique and atmospheric. The Spaceballs parody of the ending is pretty funny.

I remember as a kid there was an actual TV series based on the movie. Part of their marketing strategy was selling Planet of the Apes trading cards packaged with bubblegum. (Like Baseball cards). I collected them myself but it was short-lived. The series was cancelled after one season.
