Hello, everyone!

I reached out to some incredible Patrons for assistance with this poll, and I'm grateful for their suggestions! Exploring this genre has been quite an adventure. Researching these films has been fun as they all seem incredibly captivating!

You may notice that some movies didn't make it onto this list; I wanted to dip my toes into the genre first. Pre 1960's and "true "noir. (don't come for me)

Stay tuned for the next post for nominations all things Noir, Neo-Noir, and Noir-inspired! Trust me, that poll is going to be absolutely thrilling!

I'm buzzing with excitement for the week ahead – it's going to be fantastic! Can't wait to dive right in! Can't wait!

xx

I missed the nomination post. I want to write in an option "Dead Men Don't Wear Plad."

What a great list! You've got two Hitchcocks in there, along with an early Kubrick classic (The Killing), plus plenty of other amazing must-see films. How can you go wrong?

Michael T

I know! I voted for 5, I think, but I easily could have picked a dozen to vote for. 🤪

Catchermag

Not to be pedantic because people will surely know what you mean, but it’s Sweet Smell of Success, not Smell of Sweet Success. Great movie, btw.

JM63

Fantastic poll! The likely winner, The Maltese Falcon, is a great intro to the genre. Excited!!

Jason Vulgamore

Would The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947) be considered film nor? Danny Kaye narrates his own daydreams.

Bryan David

The Third Man is one of my all time favorites. It has one of the most memorable movie scores and my favorite character entrance. Great Film!

Bryan David

It's on the AFI top 100(#57). So even if it doesn't win this poll, I'm guessing you'll get around to it eventually.

Brent Turner

Born to Kill is so good. With all the great films in the list, it's easy to overlook. Can't go wrong with The Maltese Falcon though.

RFK Fan

I'm rooting for TOUCH OF EVIL with Orson Welles and Charlton Heston and angry at myself for not recommending it first... 😢

Toc

Wow!!!!! What a poll! I'd be happy with any of those to win!

Catchermag

I think if Maltese wins it definitely is a great starter noir movie. I’d watch Bogie eat chips because you know he’d snarl while he did. PART of me hopes The Big Sleep wins because I like it better and it’s also a Humphrey Bogart film, but The Big Sleep, famously, makes no sense 😜😂 which is part of why I like it more. Twists and turns don’t always have to go anywhere, it’s about the ride. And Lauren Bacall in that movie is beyond hypnotic.

Shawn Goforth

I have to go Double Indemnity here. I know it's not the first, but I love the voiceover, the lighting (or lack thereof), the darker tone, and it's hard to beat Billy Wilder collaborating with Barbara Stanwyck. Also, probably my favorite Edward G. Robinson. He's so good in this one!

redddfer44

Can I come for you just to congratulate you for picking only classic noirs? <3 Gotta love a poll where the newest movie is from 1958.

Chris Baldwin

To me the film "White Heat" has the most dramatic line ever uttered on screen. It also has to be Jimmy Cagny's finest performance. It looks like it will lost though. That's a shame....

Clay F

I have on my list to watch the classic film noir "KEY LARGO" (1948). I am surprised your patrons who assisted didn't suggest it. Though, I know you are limited in number for the poll. Plus, I am definitely no expert.

Catchermag

Ames, this list and category and your poll really have made the entirety of my day. I was born way after these films were released and am so glad they are still loved by so many. And I’m BUZZIN that four people even KNOW the film Detour lol. Thanks for what you do.

LaserLamb

This is a genre I know very little about. I've seen some neo-noir films like Blade Runner, Dark City, Bound, Pi (why is there no 'Pi' emoji??), maybe a couple others, but I've never delved into the classic noir era, so this will be good for me. So, I picked 11 movies on the list: titles I'm familiar with, & a few I felt bad for because they were at 0% & 1% 😄. I didn't vote for The Maltese Falcon because it didn't need my help.

Hold Down A

Im on a coffee break at work reading throu all y’all’s comments and I just have to say I LOVE you guys SO MUCH ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

redddfer44

I rewatched The Third Man just now for the first time at an age when I actually understand something about anything. I dropped all my others votes just to vote for that one SO HARD.

Catchermag

Maltese Falcon for the win! I’m so glad Double Indemnity tied for second. That film is sometimes mentioned as an archetype for American Classic Film Noir, and I agree. Billy Wilder had so many masterpieces as a director, Some Like It Hot, Stalag 17, Sabrina, The Seven Year Itch, and of course Sunset Boulevard. But for me Double Indemnity is an auteur in full control of his creative process and puts him up there in the league of Hitchcock and John Ford and Chaplin as directors who actually helped illustrate in a permanent way the America that was taking shape in the first half of the 20th Century. I’m so glad this group (and it’s leader Ames) is delving into the history of film like it has been.
